9090 Coffee Maker
"I wanted to give this machinery the features that others do not have." With these words Richard Sapper described the idea from which he started to draw 9090 espresso coffee maker. It is therefore not a banal coffee pot but a real "steam machine" as the author also states. Made of stainless steel 18/10, 9090 is original not only for its special truncated cone shape but also for some functional innovations such as the enlarged base that allows to maximize heat, the anti-drip spout and the lever lock that allow one to open the coffee pot with a simple gesture of the hand.
The Designer
Richard Sapper

He began his design career in the styling department of Daimler Benz in Stuttgart, before transferring to Milan, where he worked first for the architect Gio Ponti. In the early 1960s, Sapper began to collaborate with the architect Marco Zanuso together they acted as design consultants for Brionvega. He has developed and designed a wide variety of products, ranging from ships and cars, to computers and electronics, and furniture and kitchen appliances. The company
Founded in 1921 as a “Workshop for the processing of brass and nickel silver sheet metal, with foundry”, Alessi has always stood out for the high quality of its products. In almost a century of history, the company has gradually evolved to become one of the leading “Factories of Italian design”, capable of applying its expertise and excellence in design management to many different product types. Open to change and international development, Alessi at the same time has a strong bond with the traditions and cultural background of its area and continues to be synonymous with handcrafted objects produced with the help of machines.
Alessigraphy: the geography of Alessi production
Since the Company's Foundation in 1921 the Majority of Alessi Products have Been Manufactured through the Cold Working of Metals, a Tradition that is Kept Alive Today by the Skilled Workers at the Crusinallo Plant in Omegna.
Over time, Alessi also began to work with many other materials, such as porcelain, glass, wood, and plastic. A specific production method was developed for each one. Even when production takes place outside the Crusinallo plant, Alessi’s guidelines ensure the company’s original production quality standards, continuing to reconcile industrial technological complexity with an artisanal eye for detail.
The objects produced from the different materials are manufactured in various production plants across the world. They remain original Alessi objects in that they are conceived with the same design excellence and produced with the same attention to quality that sets the company’s products apart.

Product Description
The 9090 isn't just the first stove top espresso coffee maker in history: it was also first object for the kitchen after the 1930s, the first of many Compasso d'Oro awards (1979), first object to be inducted into the Permanent Design Collection at the New York MOMA, and of course it's the best-loved Alessi coffee maker bar none, as well as first "amphibious object", i.e. it is for kitchen use, but with its high design quality it can also be brought directly to the table.

The build quality, ease of use and simplicity of cleaning is absolutely top-notch. The fit and finish is magnificent and without peer. The materials and aesthetics are brilliant. I cannot say enough good things about this particular Moka Pot. I have been brewing with a Moka Pot as my daily brewer for 18 years and I have used a lot of brands and models. The Alessi 9090 is by far the best that I have owned. This Moka Pot is worth every penny.
The packaging was appalling. The coffee maker in its thin display box was simply thrown in a soft plastic bag and shipped, from the UK apparently, to NZ. When it arrived, the display box within the bag was falling apart. I was certain the product would be damaged but, a testament to its build quality, the coffee maker didn’t seem to be damaged at all. It easily could have been. Considering how over packaged Amazon purchased items can be, this was quite surprising.
The one advantage of the 9090 is the clamp system. There is absolutely no instructions on how to open it - and I had to find a video on youtube, but once you get the hang of it, its actually pretty fast and efficient to open and close. Its also easier to handle that when its hot after brewing rather than trying to grip the hot bottom to twist it off. (The way to open the clamp is simply to yank on it from the bottom).
I would say the Bialetti Venus is actually more attractive. The 9090 has an industrial slightly crude look to it with a more clunky design. The handle is solid metal and slightly rough. The overall look and lines are better on the Bialetti. I would say the build quality and metal thickness seem about the same too. The 9090 has an induction plate at the bottom but it looks flimsy and is not a solid piece of metal like the other Alessi moka pots. It kinda looks cheap. The bialetti has a smooth easy to clean bottom.
The 9090 is slightly more hassle to clean. There is always coffee jammed into the top filter. And coffee that has backflowed into the boiler pot. But its not too bad.
The pouring is actually better on the Bialetti too. The 9090 pours pretty nicely with the triangular hole at first but to get the last 1/3 of coffee out, you have to tip it up so far, that the lid flips open. The Bialetti allows you to pour it out easier.
Its not apparent from the photos, but the other Alessi moka pot with all the ridges is far larger and more a design statement if that is what you are looking for. This Alessi 9090 just looks like an older cruder moka pot, and the Bialetti Venus looks like the more modern stylish version.
So for me, that clamping mechanism is so nice that it makes it kinda worth it. But other than that, there is nothing special about this pot.
The first problem I encountered was that after I used it only one time the reducer filter bent inward. It bent significantly to the point where coffee grinds were coming up in my coffee. So I thought, no problem, I ordered a new one which was only about five dollars. The same exact thing happened after the very first usage. But I had paid so much for the damn thing, I continued to use it.
I have been using it now for about a year. And when I originally went through the reviews I noticed that some people had some concern with the inside of the tank (broiler) -whether or not it was coated with something. Before I purchased it, I read as much information as I could, I watched videos, and it seemed to me that it was made of stainless steel and nothing else.
First I noticed it was rusting around the bottom- inside the tank/broiler. Not much, but it was rust. Then I started to notice that the inside of the tank is peeling. I started picking at it one day with my nail and it feels like some kind of calcium deposit or paint chipping up.. and it's all over the bottom of the tank. And it gets worse the longer I continue to use it. So no, the inside of the broiler is not 100% stainless steel.

We use it on an induction plate at medium power and the results are excellent, fast and convenient.
While the coffee is different compared to an expresso machine, the overall process and elapsed time are about the same.
We love the design. We love the results.
