With little info, we ordered two of these containers. Each came with OXO brand gas absorbing packets. Since we had previously bulk ordered generic 5 gram ethylene gas absorbers, we decided to try two of those in each container. These containers weren't quite tall each to hold 3 romaine heads each, so we used elastic straps to hold them together. That setup kept lettuce for about 3 days before the heads started to wilt.
Since failure was not an option, we were able to cram 6 ethylene absorbers into each container for a total of 30 grams each. That setup kept 3 romaine heads in each container for 9 days, perfectly with no spoilage at all.
Since summer ended, our car works fine and regular grocery runs have resumed. But we continue to use these containers daily since they're so effective at staving off spoilage. We still use 6 ethylene absorbers per container with elastic straps which allows for 3 romaine heads each regardless of size. The lettuce is always fresh here with that setup.
Cleanup is almost non-existent. When the container has no veggies, we tilt it to remove excess water.
Anyone with guinea pigs or who just needs fresh lettuce would do well getting this. The product isn't the cheapest but it's just big enough for 3 romaine heads (with a little effort) while fitting comfortably onto a fridge shelf. Can't ask for much more.
I got the big size and its large enough to fit one tub of lettuce that I buy in stores. Normally, it would start to go bad on the inside after a few days but with this container, I can keep it for up to a week. I’ll admit its a little pricey, especially if you get the large size but for me it’s worth it simply because I’m not creating as much waste. On that note, I’ve been trying to cut down on kitchen waste wherever I can. I started with paper waste by finding an alternative to paper towels - Swedish dishcloths. Now I’ve set my sights on food waste.
Its also easy to wash though you can’t put it in the dishwasher. I soak it in soapy water and wash the various parts with a sponge. Luckily for me, lettuce really isn’t all that messy so the container doesn’t get too dirty even with everyday use. Oh right, you want to make sure that you don’t wash your produce before you put it in. It has to be completely dry otherwise it won’t work nearly as good.
The only issue for me is that the lid doesn’t snap on. Many people have stated this in other reviews and I agree with them 100%. Instead of snapping on, it kind of just “sits” on the top of the container. So if you’re not careful when you’re handling it, the contents can easily spill…and that has happened to me twice. I suppose you don’t want the lid to be too tight though since it’ll defeat the purpose of keeping moisture away…
So I’ve just gotten use to the loose lid. Instead of lifting it from the top, I lift it from the sides always.
But I usually wind up throwing some of the chunks out because they go bad after 2-3 days.
Enter the Good Grips Storage container. It is brilliant! It drains the liquids that erode the fruit from the bottom and allows a freshening agent, that gets stored in the top, to preserve the freshness. I get almost a week of fresh fruit chunks. Thank you Good Grips!
I grow my own sprouts at home, like alfalfa, radish, bean sprouts and so forth. So when I grow a batch, I tend to grow a LOT at once, or enough to fill this large container. And in the past, I've needed to eat them within 4 or 5 days or they start rotting. So in this case, my sprouts were still plenty fresh enough to eat 8 days later. (I did wipe off the resulting moisture condensation from the inside of the lid and also the walls & floor of the container at least once during storage, because you don't really want that condensation in there for too long.)
A common complaint I noted here in the reviews before I bought it is that the lid doesn't fasten to the top like you'd expect. It doesn't fasten at all actually and just sits there. So you really need to use both hands to lift it up and carry it around. If you just use one hand on one side you'll probably drop it.
So I don't know why they couldn't have manufactured a lid that secures to the top, but they didn't. I'm not too lazy to use both hands, but it's just remembering to do it is the thing. The first time all your produce ends up on the floor then it's easier to remember to use both hands.
But I'm still giving it a 5-star rating here in any case, because it works as advertised to keep produce fresher quite a bit longer...
Top reviews from other countries
- You can tell it is made with quality plastic.
- It is lightweight, and easy to lift the basket holder out of the container.
- It's slim and not too tall, so it's easy to find a place in the fridge for it.
- It really does keep my herbs (I really only buy either parsley or cilantro) fresher for longer. I was previously using a mason jar with some water at the bottom. The mason jar did well, but this OXO container has been keeping my cilantro fresh for at least 3 weeks now. The trick is really to use this container and not rinse the herb until you want to use it.
Cons:
- Minor: It is on the small side, but that's just the size I bought. I can hold a typical bunch of cilantro or parsley (I'm from Ontario, Canada, so I hope our herb bunches you can get at the grocery store are standard), but it's tight. It feels like it can better fit a half bunch of cilantro/parsley/whatever. I still just stuff the entire bunch in, and it stores it just fine. So this is probably personal preference.
Would I buy this again?
- Absolutely! I am planning on buying the larger size when it comes in stock.
Shipping (not affecting review score):
- Was on time with no issues.
