Editorial Reviews
The Black Keys, the multiple-Grammy Award-winning, Akron, OH natives’ twelfth studio album Ohio Players, out April 5 via Nonesuch/Warner Records. Written by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney with longtime friends Dan “The Automator” Nakamura and Beck, the celebratory, joyful “Beautiful People (Stay High)” is one of several songs on the album that feature collaborations between the band and various additional friends and colleagues, including Noel Gallagher, Greg Kurstin, and others.Speaking on the collaborative nature of the album, Carney shares, “We had this epiphany: ‘We can call our friends to help us make music.’ It’s funny because we both write songs with other people – Dan all the time [as a solo artist and producer], me when I'm producing a record. That’s what we do.”Auerbach adds, “No matter who we work with, it never feels like we're sacrificing who we are. It only feels like it adds some special flavor. We just expanded that palette with people we wanted to work with. We were there to support them and their ideas, to do whatever we could to see that moment flourish. But when it came time to finish the album, it was just Pat and me.”“We'd never worked harder to make a record,” he continues. “It's never taken us this long to make an album. We took our time and did it right.”“What we wanted to accomplish with this record was make something that was fun,” Carney says. “And something that most bands 20 years into their career don’t make, which is an approachable, fun record that is also cool.”While making Ohio Players, a title inspired by the legendary Dayton, OH funk band of the same name, The Black Keys were also DJing dance parties in cities around the world that they called “record hangs,” spinning 45s from their own eclectic and growing collections. Mojo reports, “The spirit of those parties infused the album’s DNA. ‘That’s been the fun of it,’ [says] Auerbach. ‘Letting go a little bit.’”

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024The Black Keys are back baby! Flavored with 60s psychedelia and powered by the boys’ blues rock sensibilities, this is their best album yet. Every track is a winner. Next, how about a live album guys?
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2024If you were a fan of the past several albums by The Black Keys, you'll like this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2024Given that the Black Keys is one of the best bands of the age, combined with the incredible talent of Beck, makes this a "must-have" record!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2024The vibe here is laid back, feelgood and catchy. Every track is perfect for a lazy afternoon outdoors in the sunshine, with maybe a little something to smoke. Beck cowrote and appears on half of the 14 tracks but if I didn't look at the credits, I would have thought he was even more involved, as the whole album has a 90s Beck feel to it.
This is my first Black Keys album. Yes, I was influenced by Beck's involvement, as I am a big fan of his music. The Keys' new sound is awesome! Definitely pick up this album, you'll be glad you did!!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2024I find the album disappointingly musically. I was anticipating it might be better and was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, overall, the album is forgettable. There are some good songs and I like how Beck is on several tracks, and even Liam Gallagher on a couple are good songs. But nothing really memorable or outstanding. The album is ruined by hip hop artists that just seem out of place on it. It just doesn't flow well at all. What a shame. I love the vinyl record cover art sleeve and the labels and the two -sided poster that comes with it but musically I don't really like it that much. What a shame.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2024After giving this album many many plays on Spotify, I ordered a copy of thia for my Mok for Mother's Day. I think it's rather amusing that my 74 year old religious mother likes the band but she does! This is my favorite album I've found so far this year and there's hardly a bad song on the record. The first song I heard was 'Read Em and Weep' which is probably still my favorite track along with 'Fever Tree'. This is a fantastic band!
