Editorial Reviews

Real Estate’s sixth full-length album Daniel was recorded in an ebullient nine-day spree in RCA Studio A, in Nashville with celebrated producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian. In 11 compulsively tuneful songs, they connect the uninhibited wonder of their earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood. Martin Courtney actually learned of Tashian through his daughter, who adored an album he’d produced, Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. The band reached out and spotted an instant connection despite their distinct wheelhouses—the Grammy-winning Nashville country-pop guy who’d helmed several smashes and the Northeast indie rock quintet with narcotic guitars. Real Estate had been thinking about R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People and ’90s “soft-rock radio,” the background music of their youth. Tashian helped lead them back toward it, toward an improved edition of the less self-conscious band they’d been at the start. Several days into recording, all five members of Real Estate were discussing album titles when someone suggested “Daniel,” simply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record. Was it for Daniel Tashian? Maybe. Was it a nod to The Replacements’ Tim? Possibly. Was it the sign of a band that has now been around long enough to take its music seriously without taking itself or its perception too seriously? Absolutely. 1. Somebody New 2. Haunted World 3. More New Jersey folk-rock from Real Estate
I’m always interested in new music from the New Jersey Indie Rock scene, and the Real Estate / Martin Courtney / Ducktails axis, in particular. So, when ‘Daniel’ was released in February 2024 I went and got the LP.I’m not an Audio Snob with a $25,000 stereo setup from Crutchfield, but with the modest system that I do have, ‘Daniel’ sounds nice in 5.1.‘Daniel’ is the band’s sixth studio album. You can get it in vinyl, CD, or download from indie label Domino Records.‘Daniel’ continues in the same direction as the band’s other post-Matt Mondanile albums, ‘In Mind’ (2017), ‘The Main Thing’ (2020), and ‘Half A Human’ (EP, 2021), with the emphasis more on folk rock, and rather less on New Jersey dreampop. The drummer’s stool, occupied for some time by Jackson Pollis, now is filled by Sammi Niss, the band’s first female member. In a folkie / indie rock group like Real Estate drum participation is going to be rather restrained, but on ‘Daniel’, Niss holds her own, providing some crisp cadence (as on the opening segment of the track ‘Freeze Brain’).Martin Courtney continues to be the lead vocalist / songwriter, with bassist David Bleeker, as is the custom, contributing a track. On this album, Bleeker channels his inner Kinky Friedman with ‘Victoria’, a listenable C & W song.As for the other tracks on ‘Daniel’, they don’t stray too far from Courtney’s interest in pensive meditations on adolescent / young adult life in the suburbs. And that’s a good thing, because that’s what I (at least) want from my Real Estate records.Courtney always can deliver the undiluted toe-tapping, head-nodding jangly track, whether it’s ‘Easy’, ‘Crime’, or ‘Airport Bar.’ On ‘Daniel’, we get ‘Flowers’, which packs some neat guitar licks into its economical, under-three-minutes length. At 5 minutes and 9 seconds the closing track, ‘You Are Here’, is the longest on the album. The opening vibe is very spare and dirge-like, but the track gradually adds additional musical textures before embarking on an interesting segue into an extended guitar coda. Some nitpicks: I would’ve liked to have heard more songs in the style of past Real Estate dreampop gems, like ‘In My Car’, ‘Beneath the Dunes’, and ‘After the Moon’. And while I’m in a Wishlist mood, what about a CD or vinyl release of Real Estate ‘rarities’ and B-sides ?!Anyways, if you’re looking for well-composed folk rock, performed by a seasoned band made up of skilled musicians, then ‘Daniel’ is well worth a listen.

If you like something laid back, jangly and alternative, you will like this band. Nice chill music. Also recommend (and possibly better?) are the albums “Atlas” and self-titled “Real Estate”. Been listening to them for years & friends love them

This is a great record. The songs, musicianship, and the feel of the record take me to a great West Coast place. It reminds me so much of the early 70's bands. But in a very modern way.

If you like any of their previous half a dozen or so albums, you will like this. Each of their albums offers subtle changes and additions to their sound, sometimes this can go unnoticed and under appreciated. Daniel has pedal steel adding a slight country feel on several tracks, but the songs are still wistful and melancholy in the band's style. As winter gives way to spring, they offer an inner warmth and simultaneously a nostalgic feeling and acceptance of the joyfulness of brighter, warmer days ahead. Makes me wish I was in my late teens and early 20's again.
