Editorial Reviews
WE is the new album from Canadian rock band Arcade Fire. This is the sixth Arcade Fire studio album, and is made up of seven songs that speak to this moment with unique directness. Written, recorded, and released during a critical historical juncture, they are divided into two distinct sides, “I” and “WE.” If the “I” side of the record evokes and embodies our holed-up anxiety and lack of physical connection, the “WE” side captures the excitement of new possibilities and the elevating thrill of committing to one another socially and personally. Produced by Nigel Godrich, Win Butler & Régine Chassagne, WE is a 40 minute epic as much about the forces that threaten to pull us away from the people we love, as it is inspired by the urgent need to overcome them.

Three years later, I bought "The Suburbs" and struggled through it. So, in 2013 when "Reflektor" was released as a double album, I listened with trepidation. But, I liked that album, and it was that album that solidified my liking of the band. In 2017, when all the hate was directed at "Everything Now" I didn't get it. I like that album as much as all the band's other works.
So, now we have "We". I liked the packaging design of the cd. I think some thought was put into it, and these days of digital downloads has resulted in the album cover being a lost art. I've always enjoyed perusing album art, even cd art. It tells me something about the artist. In this case the cover is all shiny and an enlarged iris with multi-colors takes up the front. The back has a shiny gold card stuck to it with "We" in large black letters followed by the song titles below. Inside, the gatefold has what appears to be an old photograph of someone's bedroom with a huge eyeball in it. The lyrics for each song are on postcards found inside one of the gatefold flaps. All this is to say that the packaging is lavish compared to most releases these days. There's a big, plain white sticker with a drawn eyeball that says "Unsubscribe" at the bottom, referencing the lyric in "End of the Empire".
I, for one, grew up listening to Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Mike Oldfield, King Crimson, Talking Heads, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Yes, so the fact that "We" only has seven songs on it didn't bother me at all. In fact, I liked it before listening to it. The fact that the song titles were generic, or divided into suites didn't bother me, either. I also appreciated that the band kept it to 40 minutes--the magic number in my book.
Once again, after repeated listens all week long, I found myself liking the album. I thought the arrangements were interesting and the lyrics thoughtful. Better than much of today's music, really. The album gave me something to think about all week long. While I appreciated hearing Peter Gabriel lend his vocals to "Unconditional II" it felt hasty. I mean, if I was going to use Peter Gabriel I'd want to duet at the very least like "This Is The Picture" or "Don't Give Up". I've been a fan of Peter Gabriel long before becoming a fan of Arcade Fire. I know very well that he covered "My Body Is a Cage" while Arcade Fire covered his "Games without Frontiers".
In general, I liked all the songs on "We", but is it a 'classic'? Well, no. Arcade Fire are nothing if not consistent for nearly 20 years, but I can't say they've ever created a classic album to stand all time. One day, right? Maybe.
Here's how "We" compares to Arcade Fire's other works:
2004 Funeral: Four Stars
2007 Neon Bible: Four Stars
2010 The Suburbs: Four Stars
2013 Reflektor: Four Stars
2017 Everything Now: Four Stars
2022 We: Four Stars
Ok, Reflector (vinyl) was also great - but only for the first side of the first record - and then it started to fall apart.
This one beautifully flows from beginning to end, wonderful melodies - it makes you melt when listening to it.
Like with Reflector, I ended up buying the Vinyl version - and unfortunately, the quality of the record itself is absolutely terrible: It is vertically out of truth, it has scratches and crackling from beginning to end - like a record I have had for 35 years, and unlike anything I have purchased in those 10 or 12 years since I started buying vinyl again.
Amazon gave me a digital AutoRip copy - which thankfully does not crackle - but is put together amateurishly: In spite of the music flowing without breaks, the digital files don’t play gaplessly: Audible clicks and cracks when tracks change - something that was a thing of the past since Steve Jobs presented the very first iPod in 2001.
Which means that Amazon leaves me with two defective versions of the same record.
Five starts for the music, one star for the technical quality. Both vinyl and “AutoRip” digital. The latter one is clearly an Amazon problem: On Spotify, it plays as a gapless recording, as intended by the musicians.
