Editorial Reviews
Some forty years into one of music's most impactful partnerships, Tears For Fears have arrived together at The Tipping Point - the group's ambitious, accomplished and surprising first new studio album in nearly two decades. An inspired song cycle that vividly recalls the depth and emotional force of the group's earliest triumphs, The Tipping Point is the bold, beautiful and powerful sound of Tears For Fears finding themselves together all over again. Gatefold Jacket.

For the 80's they took an extremely long time to come back with "The Seeds of Love" in September 1989. By then, I was working at a record store called Sound Warehouse, so it got played to death. I didn't really enjoy that album though. So, for me, it was "Elemental" in June of 1993 that really solidified my appreciation of the band. Of course, by then, the band was primarily Roland Orzabal, as Curt Smith had left. "Elemental" didn't get the raves that "The Seeds of Love" and "Songs From the Big Chair" received, but I liked it all the same. So, in October 1995, when "Raoul and the Kings of Spain" was released I bought it, but I wasn't as impressed. In March of 2001, Orzabal released his solo album, "Tomcats Screaming Outside", which was decent work.
In 2004, Curt Smith rejoined for the lackluster, "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending". Then the rumors began about a new Tears for Fears album. Years would pass, and then, late in 2021, it was confirmed, "The Tipping Point" would drop February 25, 2022.
While the duo aren't my favorite artist in my wide collection, I do have all their albums and respect what they do. They are a part of my New Wave childhood memories, and so I will buy everything they release until the end of time.
That being said, after "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending" my expectations were very, very low. So, imagine my surprise upon repeated listens to "The Tipping Point"--one of their finest albums since "Elemental". This is a four star album, and don't be swayed by what other 'fans' are writing here. This is a very good album, filled with variety and good songwriting. There are many memorable tracks from "No Small Thing" to what sounds like (to my ears) a re-working of 2017's "Stay". "The Tipping Point" made me want to hear more (and let's not wait another 18 years please).
The band wisely chose 10 songs around 40 minutes. Get in, get out. Less is more. So there's that, but all ten songs are pretty solid. "No Small Thing", "The Tipping Point", "Long, Long, Long Time", "Break the Man", "My Demons", "Rivers of Mercy" and "Stay" are all standouts. The album backslides slightly with "Please Be Happy", "Master Plan" and "End of Night", though those songs are decent. Really, this is more than any Tears for Fears fan rightfully could expect after 18 years.
"The Tipping Point" contains more songs you can add to your TFF playlist, and they'd sit nicely alongside "Mad World, "Pale Shelter", "Suffer the Children", "Watch Me Bleed", "Change", "Shout", "The Working Hour", "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", "Mother's Talk", "I Believe", "Broken", "Head Over Heels", "Listen", "Woman in Chains", "Sowing the Seeds of Love", "Advice for the Young at Heart", "Swords and Knives", "Year of the Knife", "Laid So Low (Remix)", "Elemental", "Cold", "Break It Down Again", "Power", "Goodnight Song", "Raoul and the Kings of Spain", "Falling Down", "Secrets", "God's Mistake", "Sketches of Pain", "Me and My Big Ideas", "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending", "Closest Thing to Heaven", "Call Me Mellow", and "Secret World". To these I would add "No Small Thing", "The Tipping Point", "Long, Long, Long Time", "Break the Man", "My Demons", "Rivers of Mercy" and "Stay".
Here's how "The Tipping Point" compares to Tears for Fears' other works:
1983 The Hurting: Three Stars
1985 Songs From the Big Chair: Four Stars
1989 The Seeds of Love: Three and a Half Stars
1993 Elemental: Three Stars
1995 Raoul and the Kings of Spain: Two and a Half Stars
2004 Everybody Loves a Happy Ending: Two Stars
2022 The Tipping Point: Three and a Half Stars
Sorry I missed them on tour last Summer!
