Product Description
What would Darth Vader wear?
We’ve heard that His Darthness likes to take a break from Total Universal Domination to listen to some of his favorite recordings - like those of the high pitched screams of foes being frozen in Carbonite or the incredible bass and dynamic power of total planetary destruction. But old-school in-ears won’t satisfy Mr. Vader - to properly reproduce those favorite sounds, he’ll require the new helmet-friendly iSINE from Audeze. Available in “Master of the Evil Universe” matte black.
The world’s first planar magnetic in-ears must be heard to be believed. They're a completely different listening experience than any other in-ears. To be blunt, if you must have complete sound isolation, buy something else. But if you want the widest, most accurate soundstage, the best bass response (flat to 10 Hz!), the best transient response and coherent soundfield, then the iSINEs are definitely for you. They are also exceedingly comfortable, as they just rest at the entrance to your ear canal – they do not have to be jammed down your ear to sound good. You could say “these are the in-ear headphones for people who don’t like in-ears.”
Also available with our Cipher Lightning cable for an integrated amp/DAC solution for Apple users.
Audeze iSINE10 Planar Magnetic in-ear Headphones
The superiority of Planar Magnetic drivers
Unlike conventional headphones, Audeze’s planar drivers use a very, very thin film (much thinner than Saran Wrap for example) to move the air that produces sound. Because this material has such low mass compared to conventional headphone drivers, it moves extremely fast, thus giving much better transient response/impulse response. This means percussive sounds like the snare drum, strumming acoustic guitar, popping strings on a bass (and car crashes!), all sound much more accurate and lifelike. Additionally, Audeze headphones’ Step Response test is always positive - just like real world sounds, which is not always true of conventional headphones.
So conventional drivers not only have more moving mass (the cone, the surround, the voice coil, the spider, and the glue holding everything together), they also have more distortion than Audeze’s planar drivers. In fact, our drivers may have as little as 1/10 the distortion of other headphones.
All of this means more accurate, and therefore, more realistic sound.
ABOUT AUDEZE
Audeze started in 2008 in a garage (of course!) when its founders came across a revolutionary flexible circuit material developed for NASA. Realizing this could be a great advance in planar magnetic technology, they first started to make pro audio PA speakers, but dropped this project and started making headphones – the LCD-1.
Taking this first headphone to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, it was a tremendous hit, and that success launched the company. Hanging on that garage wall was the 2001 Space Odyssey poster, and that inspired the company’s name. The founders wanted a name that had something to do with a “journey through audio,” so Odyssey would be perfect, and that’s how the name Audeze (pronounced “odyssey”) was born.
AUDEZE'S PLANAR MAGNETIC TECHNOLOGY
Acoustically engineered for accuracy
Audeze’s innovative planar magnetic technology delivers clear and accurate sound that reveals everything on the recording.

Near zero distortion
Magnet arrays delivers a uniform driving force across the entire diaphragm for near zero distortion.
Fluxor magnets
Our patented Fluxor magnet design has almost 2x the efficiency of other magnets, giving the iSINE a more dynamic impact.

I found iSine 10 to be punchy but excellent. Sound could be a bit raw, really bringing out the details and letting percussion kick through. One particular bad example - Brad Mehldau’s cover of Hey Joe was hard to listen to - piano came across as too harsh (EQ could fix easily). But most music was incredibly fun and lifelike. Took a couple hours to get accustomed to the sound, but I really fell for them.
I traded up to iSine 20. First and foremost, the soundstage is a bit wider, but the overall sound is smoother. I say “but”, because it feels compressed, some life feels gone. Drums don’t cut through with the same punch, the sound is much more mellow. To be honest - I need more time with the 20’s, and I’m sure I’ll love them, but the 10’s had a rawness that was really exciting. I’d scroll through songs to hear how they’d sound, each unique and unpredictable (and great). The 20’s are smooth and ... almost boring. The dynamics feel flat, and the soundstage goes on for miles but it’s smooth. Too smooth.
Brad Mehldau’s Hey Joe is easier to listen to in the 20’s - but it’s flat. Maybe I’ll try this analogy - with the 10’s, there was a rawness that felt like the instruments were being played in front of me. With 20’s, I feel like I’m sitting in front of speakers.
Moral of the story - the 10’s are worth having, worth the money no question. It’s not exactly a question of whether the 20’s are better, it depends on the characteristics you want. Apparently people enjoy this smoothness - but now it all sounds the same- subdued.
UPDATE: 7-20-2017. Ok so I was too lazy to advertise them for sale and have been using them sporadically at home and work and lo and behold I found that inserting them very gently into my ears makes all the difference. There's still a teeny tiny bit of soreness afterwards but no headaches or anything like that. This may seem like common sense but don't jam them into your eyes to get a perfect seal and you'll be much much happier with these. Updating my review from 2 stars to 4 stars.
In terms of driving them you don't need anything special. I use them straight out of my Creative Zen Nano listing to mp3's when walking and hiking and they sound excellent. I also use a Fulla Schitt USB DAC and a Schitt Modi for computer output with FLAC files and streaming audio and both DAC's pair very well with the iSINE's. As with all hi-end audio, the better the source the better the output will be.
I strongly suggest leaving them outside of your ears when turning sources and amps on because if they are fully in your ear canals when you power up and you forgot you left the volume turned all the way up from watching Netflix last night ...it can be most unpleasant.
Update: 8-2017; The 3-d sound presentation inside my head is exceptional. Your skull becomes the sound stage which sounds weird but turns out to be very pleasant, especially for acoustic and voice. It's like the performers are singing and performing just for you, which sounds cliche but I can't think of any other way to describe it - intimate I guess.
These are best for a quiet listening experience where there isn't much background noise. Yes you can wear them on a bus, train, plane but they won't shine unless you're in a quieter environment.
So why didn't I keep it?
1. Comfort
There are two options for mounting the speaker on your ear: an ear clip that hangs over your ear like sunglasses, and rubber pieces that fit inside your ear (not in the canal, but the actual ear). While your brain knows it won't fall, your heart never feels safe. It's an uncanny valley of fit.
2. Sound
Actually, sound, packaging, aesthetics, and price were actually positives. Here's why sound falls a tad short. The Cipher onboard DAC/DSP is necessary for its use. Sure, you can plug these into your headphone port, but the lightning inline DAC/DSP actually has an automatic, built in frequency response correction, with a Harman target response. This also means you can't charge your phone while listening to these headphones. On the other hand, it's not like some 3.5mm jacks, it'll fit despite my heavy duty phone case. The Harman response is a neat idea, but I believe the iSine10 falls short. I find it has holes in the sound, holes that make it an uncanny valley of sound. Despite the phenomenally low distortion, clarity, and open back "air", significant holes in its frequency response render vocals unusual sounding, that are only partially remedied by pushing the volume up.
That being said, give Disney classics, "A Whole New World' or "Reflection" a listen, and you'll get goosebumps. I don't get goosebumps like that with other 'phones. Oh, and the bass response of the iSine10 is ridiculous. Sub bass for days... and nights. if they can solve the fit/comfort issues, and frequency response to where you can use the 3.5mm jack, I'm sold. Until then, It's bested by the SE846 (but is that really fair?). Not all is lost, though. As this was my first pair of planar magnetic 'phones, I'm now very interested in Audeze's full size cans. I have high hopes.
The SE846's were eventually bested by the Etymotic ER4XR, which were bested by their neutral sister the ER4SR. The ER4SR + Chord Mojo + Tidal is my current setup. I think it'd cost a lot more to get anything better than this. It's so close to perfect that it's not worth tinkering with anymore.
Top reviews from other countries
After a searching around, I found a few articles/Reddit posts suggesting I EQ them. I had to learn how to EQ: understand which frequencies affected which sound, adjust, and make them sound just the way I wanted them to.
A few hours (spread across a few days) spent going in blind and constantly adjusting my EQ settings, I believe I got the sound dialed in just right. These headphones FORCED me to learn how to EQ. It was a long and frustrating journey getting to this point, but now they sound incredible.
Want great sounding headphones right out of the box that matches it's pricetag? Don't buy this.
Are you OK with EQ'ng? These could be worth it for you, but still shop around/do your research.
