The company RIEDEL is a family owned, 300 year-old crystal company known to be the inventor of varietal specific stemware. Riedel is the first company in history to recognize that the taste of a beverage is affected by the shape of the vessel from which it is consumed, and has been recognized for its revolutionary designs which complement primarily alcoholic beverages.

2016 is a year of anniversaries for Riedel. The company is celebrating being in business for 260 years while Vinum - the company's most successful glassware range - is turning thirty. 1986 was not just an important year for Riedel but for all wine lovers around the world. The launch of the machine-made Vinum glass collection by Riedel Glas fundamentally changed the drinking glass culture. In 1973, Claus J. Riedel, the ninth generation of the family-run company, introduced a winefriendly, handcrafted and hand blown range of glasses. The 'Sommeliers' range is now world famous. In 1986, his son, Georg J. Riedel, presented a further innovation which would become even more significant: the first varietal-specific machine-made glass in history – Vinum!

Be sure to check the height is compatible with your cupboard space. While it's true that you can get decent glasses for cheaper, they can't approach the experience of drinking a great Bordeaux inspired wine out of a glass that's designed specifically to enhance the experience is something that other offerings just can't match.

I have Riedel Sommelier glasses, which are hand blown lead crystal but they're very expensive and very fragile so I don't feel comfortable using them every day. These Vinum series Bordeaux glasses are a great everyday solution. Lead crystal, formed to enhance specific qualities in the wines I love the most but machine blown and more sturdy.

And I'll tell you a little secret: unless you're dealing with a hardcore wine snob, most people will be just as blown away by these as they are by the much more expensive Sommelier versions. Personally, I prefer not to drink wine with people who use words like "precocious" to describe wine, I'd much rather enjoy wine with people who can just appreciate it for what it is and what it does in their mouth.

These glasses are perfect for 99% of your wine drinking (of you're drinking big reds) and I'm pretty sure most people will get more enjoyment out of them than their more expensive cousins.

Wow, just wow! For years I had the Robert Mondavi Cabernet glasses by Waterford Crystal and didn't think there was any way in the word those could be topped. Well, I ended up breaking both of them (sadly!) and happened upon these majestic beauties. Five words for that: I should've broken the other ones sooner!

There is a method to handling crystal glasses and most of you already know all of that. Suffice it to say that if you don't torque on the stem or base whilst washing and use two towels to dry, you should be golden.

I bought four of these glasses weeks ago and I am still using the first glass I took out of the box and I drink every night, so there. (knocks on wood!) .

EDIT: February 5, 2022.

I came back to this review because I'm buying a pair for a friend. These beauties are still holding up wonderfully without any issues. They are wine royalty in every sense of the word!

My wife and I have always had inexpensive and somewhat random wine glasses so When it was time to get a complete set I decided to go big and got 16 Cab/Merlot Ridel glasses. They were delivered in well protected boxes with none broken. The stickers were easy to remove and left no sticky film on the glass. There is clearly a difference with these crystal glasses, almost weightless and the thin glass is super smooth on the lips so you can really experience the wine you are drinking.
The glass does feel breakable but so far I haven't broken any and washed them all. The real test will be when we host our next wine party (I'll update this review if the glasses let me down). My only complaint is the price. I feel like I spent twice the price for these compared to similar Cab/Merlot glasses. Not saying it was a bad choice but not sure the value of these glasses is really there
