Studio Vocal Suite Anywhere You Need It

Roland’s Aira Compact series merges the musical magic of decades of innovation with unmatched portability. With the E-4 Voice Tweaker, Sweetwater’s sound experts agree that the only thing “compact” is its size. This on-the-go vocal processor draws from Roland’s robust repertoire to deliver a host of FX in a battery-powered, pocket-sized module. Boasting satisfying tactility, the E-4's streamlined interface encourages exploration of its Auto Pitch, harmony, and vocoder functions, alongside a host of FX and processing modes, with no shortage of I/O options. Rock it on its own or plug it into your system — whichever route you choose, the techno-wizardry of this sleek system lets you construct the perfect vocal visage.

Powerful, portable play

The E-4’s deceptively simple interface hides a world of vocal opportunity. Auto Pitch, harmony, and vocoder effects are just the beginning. Reverb, tempo, delay, and chorus effects are freely available throughout the looper’s 24-second recording space, all in real time. The Scatter knob yields compelling rhythmic flares, situated alongside pitch, formant, and reverb sliders, dealing a satisfying user experience. Shape your output with the onboard low-cut filter and noise gate, with unlimited overdubbing, undo/redo, and automatic bpm detection. Craft everything from serene vocal vistas to volatile soundscapes, thanks to the E-4’s intuitive integration that is comprised of a 1/4-inch mic input and audio, MIDI, and sync I/O. Class-compliant USB-C/MIDI interfacing requires no additional drivers, and the onboard pitch and vocoder’s melodic parameters can be controlled externally.

Fun Voice Tweaker with a quirk.

I'll say this once again I'm a big fan of Rolands Boutique Series Synths, they all represent a point in time of Roland's Synthesizer history (all of which I either owned or worked with)
The entire new AIRA Series builds on this Roland tradition.
I wanted to complete my "AIRA Trilogy" and decided to get the E-4. Mainly because it is so unique as a voice processor. I have many talents but one is NOT singing. If I was ever held as a hostage all I would have to doing is start singing and they'd release me immediately and go running, lol. I also thought it'd be fun to process external Synths, which is does quite well with one known Quirk.
This will be a bit long but worth reading to help any of you who might want to process external instruments.
Aside from the Microphone input, the top Headphone Output is also a hidden Input. There are several YouTube videos which show issues when trying to connect external instruments to it and requiring that a Mic Cable always be plugged in. Very odd!

I finally purchased my E-4 last week and love all of the Voice Processing features. After testing it with the obvious Voice/Mic Input I wanted to do a more systematic test of connecting external gear. In all of the YouTube Videos showing the connection issues, the audio source was unchanged, never varied.

I decided to do a test with several Synths from Behringer, a Korg Volca FM2 and 2 Roland Boutiques.

My connections were as follows:

UGreen Brand Mic/Audio Y Splitter TRRS, for the headphone and line in from the synths

A UGreen TRS Stereo Cable for the Audio Outs of the synths.

A Standard Mono TR Cable for the Audio Outs - In All Cases the MONO Cable did not produce any Audio Output!

Pioneer Headphones
Shure PGA58 Microphone with XLR-1/4 Plugs
The E-4 worked perfectly, as it should with the Microphone.

For my Tests in all cases I used the 3.5mm output connections on the Synths phones or Audio Out, from the front panels not the Main OutPuts. Here is a breakdown of the various Synths and outcome for each:

Behringer CRAVE
Microphone Cable Plugged In, Audio Out from Headphone Out, TRS Audio Cable - Worked Fine, Plenty of Volume
No Microphone Cable Plugged In - ZERO, Nothing

Behringer ARP 2600 Blue Marvin
Microphone Cable Plugged In, Audio Out from Headphone Out, TRS Audio Cable - Worked Fine, Plenty of Volume
No Microphone Cable Plugged In - ZERO, Nothing

Here is where it changes:
Behringer Pro-1
Microphone Cable Plugged In, used the Audio Out , TRS Audio Cable - Worked Fine, Decent Volume
No Microphone Cable Plugged In, also worked but with much more volume, in fact very loud

Using the Phones Output with the Microphone Cable Plugged In, softer volume, when No Microphone Cable Plugged In - ZERO, Nothing

Behringer K-2
Microphone Cable Plugged In, Audio Out from Headphone Out, TRS Audio Cable - Worked Fine, Decent Volume
No Microphone Cable Plugged In - ZERO, Nothing

Behringer Model D
Microphone Cable Plugged In, Audio Out from Headphone Out, TRS Audio Cable - Worked Fine, Decent Volume
No Microphone Cable Plugged In - ZERO, Nothing

KORG Volca FM 2
Microphone Cable Plugged In, Audio Out from Headphone Out, TRS Audio Cable - VERY LOUD, this is the only Synth that had the PEAK light come on

No Microphone Cable Plugged In - SUPER Loud and the audio was jumping all over, no consistent sound at all, when I play notes on the keyboard it was just random, jumpy sounds and patterns.

LASTLY 2 Roland Boutiques, JU-06A and JX-08
In both cases:
Microphone Cable Plugged In, Audio Out from Headphone Out, TRS Audio Cable - Worked Fine, Decent Volume
BUT With No Microphone Cable Plugged in, they were so full of volume, had to control it so they would not PEAK the E-4 Input
The E-4 worked PERFECTLY.

CONCLUSION: it is very obvious that the cables used, the Audio Outputs used and the particular Synth all play a role in what works and what doesn't. But most obvious is the using a Roland Synth, at least the Boutiques Series is the way it works best. There is certainly a compatibility between the Roland Products that is not there with other manufacturers.
I hope this helps some of you.
And yes the E-4 is a great little device

Vocoder mania !

Yes indeed, Roland has done it again!
I own the VT 4 the VT 3 and now this great little unit VE 4 Roland voice tweaker !
The variations, the scatter function, the reverb, the delay, being able to do auto tune in a box the size of an iPad mini crazy!
One of my favorite features is the looper!
There are infinite possibilities that you can do using your voice looping in vocoder!
I can't express how cool the Aira compact series by Roland is!
I love them I bought all three! And the E4 is definitely one of the coolest things that I have in my collection.
Buy them! Call your sales engineer at Sweetwater now and buy them! That's all I Gotta say!

Both fun and practical

I am just getting started with my sound studio and eventually needed a voice enhancer/distortion unit to take a stab at producing various synthetic voice samples to try with recording software like Ableton/Bitwig/Presonus DAWs. So I went for a new introductory level voice processing unit like the Roland "Voice Tweaker" and I just had fun tweaking the controls while whispering into the microphone! It can be used more seriously also; I have seen several lengthy videos explaining how to use all of its features, in-depth and it has a lot of potential to grow into it.

Waste of my time and money (TLDR at bottom)

I guess that it is my fault that I did not take the time to research this product enough prior to purchase. I just watched the manufacturer propaganda without really thinking it through. This is probably really cool for someone that is looking to do electronic dance music and like robotic voices, but for me, it was a waste.

I didn't really think about the in/outs when I purchased. This is supposedly a professional device, yet there is only a Hi-Z input for a mic? You cannot use a decent mic without using a pre-amp or some manner of converting from XLR to 1/4. STRIKE ONE!

The output and MIDI jacks are 1/8" (3.5mm), this too is depressing, more adapter and cables to hook together if you want to use is as an outboard effect using the send/return from your board, or you want to use a keyboard to control your vocoder. STRIKE TWO!

The actual output sounds are quite unnatural and difficult to use in any kind of a subtle manner. STRIKE THREE!

I should also mention the microscopic print manual that is confusing at best and the poor choice of display symbology on the little LED screen on the unit itself to communicate settings. The only way to charge is USB-C cable (w/o a "wall wart" included) and there is no option for AA batteries for portability.

C'mon ROLAND. I have been buying your stuff for 40 years, I've never got a piece of junk like this before. I have to blame myself for lack of due diligence on this one, but I would expect more forethought about the customer when making these products.

TLDR: If you are into dance music, or looking for a consumer grade toy to make fun robot sounds, you may be interested. If you think you are getting a pro-level device to help make your vocal tracks interesting, RUN AWAY NOW!

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
