FAQ – ANSWERS TO ALL THINGS ELECTRIC

  • Is there a way to optimize the range?

Yes. Like fuel efficiency with gas engines, your speed and the use of electrical features within the car that rely on battery power, such as air conditioning or heated seats, may affect the vehicle’s range. Reducing the energy consumption of the vehicle will increase the range.
To maximize driving range, consider these steps:

    • - Pre-heating or pre-cooling your vehicle’s cabin via the MyMazda App while charging.2
    • - Parking in a garage to minimize the effects from extreme weather.
    • - Drive efficiently by avoiding heavy acceleration and high speeds, which can drain the battery faster.
    • - Check your tire pressure often from within the vehicle via the tire pressure sensor; underinflated tires can negatively impact range.

How does temperature affect Mazda electrified vehicles’ driving range?

Lithium-ion batteries prefer an ideal temperature of 77-95° F (25-35° C). If the battery is too cold, range, charging times and performance can decline. Range is less affected by hot weather, but the battery can degrade more quickly and charge more slowly.

What if I need to drive a longer distance and have range anxiety?

Rest assured, the CX-90 PHEV is a gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle with a 490-mile combined gas/electric range, meaning the gasoline engine is there to back up the electric motor when battery charge becomes low. You can fill up your PHEV at any available gas station.3

What can I do if I run out of battery charge on the road?

The CX-90 PHEV automatically switches over to the gas engine when the battery is depleted. While driving, the CX-90 PHEV can also deploy “Charge Mode” which utilizes the engine to charge the battery up to a preset level. While the CX-90 PHEV can operate on 100% electric power, you cannot operate the vehicle without gasoline in the tank.

Do electrified cars give off emissions?

When the CX-90 PHEV operates in electric-only mode, there are no emissions from the vehicle’s tailpipe. On longer drives, when the gas engine turns on, the PHEV performs similar to a traditional hybrid vehicle, consuming less fuel and producing fewer emissions than standard internal combustion engines.

What kind of range can I expect?

The Mazda CX-90 PHEV has an around town all-electric range of 26 miles. For longer trips, you can expect a total combustion and electric range of 490 miles.3

Overall, CX-90 PHEV models have a combined fuel economy of 56 MPGe.4

What kind of battery is equipped with the Mazda CX-90 PHEV?

The CX-90 PHEV is equipped with a 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery.

Is the battery covered by a warranty?

Yes, the CX-90 PHEV lithium-ion batteries come with a High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty. This warranty is for 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The Transitional Zero Emissions Vehicle (TZEV) High Voltage Battery extended emission warranty coverage may apply. See your Mazda Dealer for Limited Warranty details.

    • The High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty period is 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

For vehicles registered in California and other states that have adopted California’s emissions regulations under Section 177 of the Federal Clean Air Act, extended emission warranty coverage of the High Voltage Battery may apply. This extended emission warranty coverage is for vehicles certified as a Transitional Zero Emissions Vehicle as indicated on the vehicle emission control information label. In TZEV states, extended emission warranty coverage of the High Voltage Battery may apply.

The High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty period begins on the Date of First Service. “Date of First Service” means the first date the Mazda Vehicle is delivered to the first retail purchaser, is leased or is placed into service as a company vehicle (e.g., as a demonstrator, rental or fleet vehicle), whichever is earliest. This Limited Warranty does not mean the High Voltage Battery is defect free. For this reason, Mazda provides this Limited Warranty to remedy during the warranty period any such defects in materials and workmanship subject to the exclusions indicated in the “WHAT IS NOT COVERED”. The vehicle must be brought to an Authorized Mazda Dealer for all warranty service. The Authorized Mazda Dealer will without charge for parts or labor, either repair or replace the defective High Voltage Battery using a new, remanufactured or factory reconditioned High Voltage Battery with a suitable energy capacity level at the time of warranty repair. See your Mazda Dealer for High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty details.

    Can car batteries be recycled?

Yes, the batteries used in plug-in hybrids can be recycled. It is not the owner's responsibility to recycle or handle the battery; it will stay intact within the vehicle. The batteries are lithium-ion type—just like those in laptops and mobile phones.

Why does my dash say I have one mile of range when my battery is 50% charged?

Weather conditions can often impact your battery charge. If your battery temperature drops below a certain temperature, your CX-90 PHEV will transition to using the vehicle's engine. During this time, your available range will show as one mile. Once the battery temperature increases, your available range will be updated.

  • Am I eligible for any credits or rebates if I purchase this vehicle?

You may be eligible for tax credits when purchasing a CX-90 PHEV or when installing a home charger. Additional rebates may be available—please visit your state or local government websites to find the latest rebate information in your area. Click here to learn more.

  • Where are the child seat anchor points in the CX-90? Can I put a car seat in the third row?

The CX-90 is equipped with Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) for all seating positions in the 2nd row and the outboard seating positions in the 3rd row.

How do the Smart Brake Support features work?

Smart Brake Support features use the forward sensing camera, front radar sensor, and at times, the front and rear side radar sensors, to detect your vehicle's proximity and approach rate to other vehicles and surrounding objects to provide forward collision warnings and automatic emergency braking aimed at mitigating predicted collisions.5
