Product Description
What is Skinnies?
Skinnies Sungel SPF 30 is a unique lightweight broad-spectrum formulation that is made without water and contains ingredients that won't cause irritation to your skin. Designed for use on the face and body, Skinnies Sungel SPF30 uses advanced Organogel to create a layer that bonds to the top of your skin so the sunscreen filters stay in place.
What’s in it?
Skinnies is made with minimal ingredients for maximum efficacy. All ingredients rate well on EWG and Paula’s Choice. There are no ingredients of animal origin so it’s safe for vegans.
There are many ways our oceans are polluted and impacted, not least by rubbish & plastic, run off, emission and global warming raising the ocean temperature. This temperature change and rubbish causes most of the damage to coral reefs in our precious oceans.
Bonus fact: Martha Van Arts, Skinnies Co-founder has a Masters in Environmental Engineering which means she’s super keen on Skinnies products being effective, efficient and safe for the environment.
How do you use it?
Use Skinnies thoroughly and sparingly for instant long lasting UV protection. A pea size blob will cover your face, neck and ears.
The industry recommended amount of normal sunscreen for your whole body is a shot glass (30ml). For Skinnies you use a teaspoon amount (around 6ml) so you use 5 times less than typical sunscreens!
The gel is super concentrated so work the tube like clay to get it out!
Check the water resistance rating and reapply if you’re in the water for extended periods or if you towel dry yourself.
Bonus fact: rolling around in the sand is like an exfoliating treatment so make sure to reapply!
Operating under the philosophy of zero water for zero waste of the planet’s most precious resource, Skinnies is committed to the environment and devoted to building the best sun care brand in the world to keep consumers safe in the sunshine.
All you need to remember is - a little goes a long way!
An eco-spirited brand, the Skinnies philosophy is minimal ingredients for maximum efficacy to protect both people and the environment.

I tried using the pea sized blob, but found I needed more when I got to my neck. Maybe I *didn't* need more, but my hands felt dry and were dragging my skin, so I used about another half-pea sized blob to finish my neck.
After going on a long walk, about 1.5 hours, in the sun with my dogs in partly cloudy 90 (F) heat, I didn't have any redness or skin irritation, I also had no burning sensation in my eyes, and I couldn't taste it in my mouth, even though I was sweating.
I know it is nearly impossible to really tell if a sunscreen is working, especially from micro-brands, but this one seems to really work, and I really like that it is reef safe and you only need a small amount for your face/neck area. No odor and didn't get sticky.

Spoiler alert! I DID NOT BURN! Not even a little. A full week spent on the beach, in the ocean, swimming pools, and on a golf course. Nothing. NADA. NO RED!!! No peeling skin!! No agony!
I didn't even have to reapply ever 30 minutes like usual. I reapplied once the first day after spending a solid hour in the ocean with the waves beating on me. The next day, I didn't. And still didn't burn.
Plus, it is not greasy, doesn't smell to high heaven, my kiddo didn't complain about it getting in his eyes, and my skin is super well hydrated now. This stuff is a straight up MIRACLE! I also have more than 3/4 of the tiny bottle left after using this on 2 adults and 1 child at the beach for a week.
I finally found the holy grail of sunscreen!
In regards to that packaging, it needs some improvement and specifically some reinforcement at the end. I returned the first bottle because it was oozing out of the bottom. Unfortunatley, the replacement tube has the same issue. It looked compromised even before I put pressure on the tube to squeeze out the product. Hopefully they will resolve this issue before I buy my next tube. I will keep this defective one because I suspect the entire "batch" will be the same. Hopefully it won't dry out the tube.
The bad:
1) I expected great customer service, but when I reached out to Skinnies directly to let them know my product only had a couple of months until expiration (compared to the 24 months I’ve seen them say elsewhere on Amazon), they simply said their manufacturer put the wrong expiration date (2020 rather than 2021). They told me to reach out again when I ran out and they’d give me a coupon of some sort. To me, that sounds like an excuse!
2) The tube starts feeling half empty after the second or third use. Lots of air pockets! You also do end up using more than they say to use because it feels like you’re just rubbing dry skin if you use a pea sized amount.
3) The tube broke. After the second use, product started coming out both ends because the top of the tube came unglued. Again, doesn’t make me confident on their QA process.
4) Lastly, the product gave me a horrible rash. Disclaimer that I do have sensitive skin and can break out, but I have never ever ever in my 39 years gotten a rash this bad from sunscreen and I’ve tried them all!
I’m not listing this as a con since this is a sunscreen and not a sunblock, but my kids tend to get very dark in the sun and this product didn’t seem to stop that. Maybe they were protected from the harmful UV rays, but I’m going back to our trusty white zinc oxide.
