These pens are VERY small compared to a standard fountain pen--if you have large hands, you will definitely want to post the cap. But they are surprisingly well-balanced and ergonomic. The grip section has a satisfying flare, the cap posts solidly, and the gold Kaweco medallion on the cap and tiny knurling on the base of the pen body are nice touches that give the pen a look and feel that are much more expensive than it's actual price tag.
Smooth writer, great ink flow, and distinctive look and feel. The only drawback is that they DO have low ink capacity. They will accept a standard International cartridge, but the converters Kaweco makes for it hold about half what a standard disposable cartridge holds. Otherwise, these are very cool little pens. I'll definitely be buying more Kaweco Sports for my collection!
This being my first fountain pen, I was quite pleased with the performance of the pen. Ink from the cartridge started flowing almost immediately. It writes smoothly and makes very fine lines, especially on good paper. It seems to be well constructed even though it is a bit light weight due to being plastic. It being made from plastic is a good thing though as it can be converted to an eye dropper pen, significantly increasing the amount of ink it holds.
So the negatives. Having never used a fountain pen, and one that uses small cartridges, I was a bit surprised at just how small the ink cartridges are. I also picked up a mini piston converter for it and I was even more surprised at how much smaller it is than a cartridge. Also, you have to purchase the converter separately, it doesn't come with the pen which increases the cost of the pen by about 50%. After purchasing the converter, I discovered you can convert the pen to an eyedropper pen which will significantly increase how much ink it holds. I plan to do this once the blue cartridge is used up. Now that I have the converter, I may pick up another Sport to use it in, that way I can try out other ink colors and not have to keep a single color in it for a long time.
It is a small pen and you almost have to put the cap on the back so that it fits into your hands well, especially if you have large hands. If you have really small hands you may be able to use it without the cap on the back of the body, but I don't think I'd recommend it.
It doesn't come with the piston converter, so you can't get into using bottled inks in it right away. So if you want to use bottled inks in it you either have to clean and refill the cartridge it comes with (which requires a syringe), buy the piston converter, or buy silicone grease to convert it to an eye dropper pen. All these options increase the initial cost of the pen, but they will significantly decrease the cost in the long run as you don't have to purchase expensive cartridges and you have a much greater selection of ink colors available.
All together my first choice of fountain pens has been a good experience for me. It has not turned me off from using fountain pens. I don't know that I would recommend it as a first pen for someone with larger hands. With the small ink capacity in the small cartridges and having to spend extra money to use bottled inks (albeit saving money in the long run) and it's small size, it would be better as a starter pen for someone with smaller hands.
