Let me tell you, these big soft foam curlers are PERFECT. I have tried everything and I mean EVERYTHING to get my hair to curl. I wanted something that would be gentle on my hair and non damaging but easy to sleep in. Take the wires out of the foam and they are sooo comfy!
So as you can see in the video (which I filmed before I realized I could take the wires out) I use these differently than instructed. I was inspired by this brand called Cozy Curlers but I was not about to pay $35 for 8 curlers when with all my hair, I need about 24 curlers. The conair ones are cheap at $10 for 8 curlers and I bought 4 packs. Yes, 4. I use all but one curler so I can easily put 23 curlers in my hair.
The net on my hand is called “highly elastic tubular net bandage” in the size meant for fingers and I purchased it on Amazon. It comes in a roll of 25 yards. You’ll want to cut pieces of the net a bit longer than the length of the rollers.
Because my hair is long and thick, it takes literally days to air dry in normal rollers. These conair ones are perfect because they’re long enough for my hair to wrap around the entire length of the curler without the hair being wrapped on top of itself which increases dry time. Also, not using the curlers with the wires decreases drying time. I set my hair when it is wet from the shower and my hair is air dried in less than 24 hours. And it’s even less if I use my bonnet dryer. This is a vast improvement from the 2 hours under the dryer or 3 days of air drying with regular roller sets.
Also, the amazing shine you’re seeing on my hair is with ZERO product! Except water, shampoo and conditioner, there was nothing else I applied to my hair. No gel, no hairspray, no creams or leave in no nothing.
If you set your hair when it is wet (not damp, wet) the curls will last all week. I wash my hair once a week. When you curl the hair wet, the hair will get “muscle memory” and the curls will easily reform if you put them back into the rollers overnight without re-wetting the hair. And since these are so comfy to sleep in when you take the wires out, I put the rollers back into my hair every night before bed and wake up and then comb out the curls with a wide tooth comb and viola! Perfect hair!!!
The only downsides to these curlers are that with the way I do this with the net, the hair does not get the volume at the roots that it does with regular roller sets and the roots don’t get smoothed. You can see in the photos my roots are frizzy. I don’t do anything about this but you can smooth the roots with a flat iron if you want. I would also suggest first putting your hair in a high ponytail on the top of your head and then using the curlers on the hair that comes out of the ponytail so that once it’s dry and you take your hair down, you’ll have major volume. You could also do small individual ponytails for each roller to smooth the roots (just Google “roller set ponytail method” and you’ll see what I mean- Black women have been doing this to get their roots extra smooth with a roller set for ages).
Other than that the only other con is that when I have all these in my hair, it’s not as hot or glamorous as a regular roller set- I look like a LaLa Loopsie doll and wouldn’t dare leave the house with them in. In normal rollers I don’t mind leaving the house because normal rollers look glamorous- these rollers just look crazy. But they are soooo comfortable!!
Also I probably sound like an infomercial but I was not sent free product, paid or reimbursed or compensated in any way for this review. I just love these rollers and finally found something that works for me after years of searching and I hope I can help someone else out there. :) CONAIR, Never discontinue these please!!
Oh and in the photos with the grey sweater, I curled all the rollers going in opposite directions and in the photo with the navy plush robe I put all the rollers in the same direction away from my face all the way around my head. Doing so gives different looks as you can see.
