Wondering if I should have gotten a Peloton
3 Stars
Wondering if I should have gotten a Peloton
I have been researching exercise bikes for a while now (to be able to do cardio at home over the winter during the pandemic) and ultimately decided on the NordicTrack since it was 1) a few hundred dollars cheaper, 2) included a year of iFit classes, 3) had real incline adjustments (my old road bike trainer used blocks that had to be physically added and removed while completely off the bike), and 4) had automatic incline/resistance changes during classes (great for better immersion).I've had it for 2 days and am feeling some buyer's remorse. I may update this review once I've had it a few months, but probably only if they fix some of the major, glaring UX issues with the software.Pros: definitely sturdy, nice screen size (s22i), small footprint (I have it on a 2.5ft x 5ft mat with room to spare), very quiet when incline is steady. I do really enjoy the on-location guided rides (when they actually play) and have had a few awkward moments where I've tried to coast up to stop signs and whatnot.Cons: See categorized list below.Assembly: One of the bolt holes in the rear base was mis-threaded. Hopefully only having 5.5 points of contact back there is okay, because I didn't want to go through the hassle of having to return this over THAT. If necessary, I will get a tap and die set and rethread it myself. Annoying, but not a deal breaker. The bike is quite heavy, so unless you have a lot of upper body strength, you will need a second person for the majority of the assembly. They're not kidding when they say you need two people. (But that is to be expected with something like this, so I wouldn't say it's a con. Just something to be aware of. Probably pay for the expert assembly if you're a solo, smaller-statured person.)Wi-Fi Setup: Going through the process, I had to ask myself out loud multiple times, "Did anyone at this company actually GO through this themselves?" I'm a software engineer who specializes in tools & UI, and I was shocked at how bad this was. There is no way to minimize the virtual keyboard, and when it's up (so you can, say, type your Wi-Fi password), it almost completely covers the cancel and submission buttons (I actually don't know what these buttons say because the text was obscured - see photo). There is a tiny sliver of space above the text on each button that can be pressed to trigger the onClick event. If you're lucky, you'll choose the actual submit button (instead of the cancel one) and be able to continue the setup process, but if you are unlucky (or have large fingers, I suppose), it will close the Wi-Fi window entirely and you will have to reopen it from scratch. It does not keep any of the text you typed, so you will need to re-enter your entire Wi-Fi password every time this happens (and if you're like most people, this is a very long string of random characters: an absolute JOY to have to retype multiple times). [PS. The ^ key is in one of the bizarre sub menus on the virtual keyboard.] This screen violates so many UX heuristics, it's kind of funny.Bluetooth Pairing: Also hilariously bad. After failing to pair from the standard setup menu, or through the equally unusable iPhone app, I went into the admin mode so I could see what the bike was picking up in the house. Ultimately, I had to reset Bluetooth on the bike (not any of my devices) multiple times before it would pull up the actual names for any of my iOS devices. Way more trouble than I was expecting from something this modern.iPhone App: I ended up deleting it off my phone. Every time I opened it (even when I was JUST logged into my account on it), it would ask me for my birthdate, height/weight, and HOME ADDRESS (?), and the skip button on the address page wouldn't do anything. Also, even when the bike was paired to my phone, the app wanted me to re-pair (which it was incapable of doing for unknown reasons). So even if I wanted to use the superior Browse function for classes (which was ONLY "superior" because it has a Filter function) to start class playback on my bike, I couldn't. Unusable.iFit Software on the Bike: WHY IS THERE NO SEARCH, SORT, OR FILTER?!? Seriously. Why? (There is a Browse, but it basically just dumps every single thing in the library on a single screen with no way to sort or filter. This also violates a ton of UX heuristics.) Again, I have to ask, has anyone at NordicTrack tried to use this, like, pretending they were an actual customer with specific wants and needs? Pro tip: User Personas. This seriously makes me want to try out Peloton's class software to see how it compares. The best workaround I have been able to come up with is to use my PC to find videos I am interested in, make a note of which series they are in, and then scroll (and scroll and scroll) until I manage to find it on the bike. I'm seriously considering just installing Netflix and ignoring iFit entirely, which sucks, because the automatic adjustments are one of the reasons I bought this instead of a Peloton. There is SO MUCH room for improvement here with just a few small changes. Please add sort and filter!iFit Classes: I'm a long distance bicycle commuter and the few "Beginner" classes I tried out to get a feel for the bike and the screen were... not what I would personally recommend to someone who was new to stationary bicycling. (So actual beginners, beware.)I can't seem to get through a 25 minute video without it unexpectedly stopping to buffer at least once. I find this irritating since I have gigabit internet, and it really kills the immersion on those lovely tour rides. Kind of wish there was a way to just connect the bike to ethernet at this point.Parts: I will be replacing the seat and the pedals ASAP. The seat is basically what most of the reviews warned about. (As a commuter, I am used to a much different saddle, so I kind of expected that anyway though.) The pedals do not have clips on the bottom, so if you want to clip in, you're out of luck. I also felt like the toe cages on the ones that come with the bike encourage some weird knee pronation. They're not great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safer than cycling on the streets…
Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2021
So I’ve been cycling since I was in middle school. Been spinning the cranks for over 40 years. Had a couple friends in the last 6 years killed by texters or drunk drivers. I desperately needed to find a way to stay in shape, do something I enjoy, and not get hit by a motorist.
I researched all the big companies and tried several in person. The most important aspect to me that made the Nordictrack stand miles ahead of their competitors was the auto-adjustment, caliber of the trainers, and the feeling like I’m actually on the street riding and tackling the terrain.
I hate spin classes and I didn’t want a spin bike. Im all about the journey from point A to point B and if I happen to get some good exercise as well, then great. I didn’t want something that was going to be boring or just about cardio or spinning the cranks. I wanted something that would keep me coming back again and again.
Well the S22i is exactly what I wanted/needed. It is fun, works flawlessly with adjusting the resistance and incline, and has a huge library of different rides. I can choose to ride some of the Tour De France roads, travel through the streets of Vietnam or Japan, or tackle the mountain trails of Utah. All from the convenience of my house. The unit is extremely quiet and has all sorts of ways to adjust your ride to make it perfect.
My wife works from home so the ability to pair it with a Bluetooth device was incredibly important. I put my own cranks on it from my Trek as well as my saddle and it feels just like my road bike. The integrated fan also really helps when breaking a good sweat and feels like a good downhill breeze in the face.
My wife, who’s NOT a cyclist loves the fact that she can still use some of the trainers and do Yoga or a huge variety of other workouts that don’t require the bike. She simply turns the screen to the side so she can see all the action. She gets all the motivation and activity she needs.
I’m so glad I bought this from Amazon. It was super easy to assemble, the price was perfect, and it is better than the bikes my friends have from Peloton or Bowflex. They are actually jealous of my bike. If you are looking for a good and safe replacement for city riding, then look no further cause the S22i is for you.
