Malaika and The Invisible Collection join forces to deliver a beautiful capsule collection and raise funds for Threads of Hope.
We are proud to present an exclusive collection of gorgeous hand-woven linens by Malaika. Marking International Women’s Day, all sales proceeds throughout March 2021 will be donated to the Thread of Hope School in Cairo.
Malaika needs no introduction, the Egyptian brand founded in 2004 by Margarita Andrade and Goya Gallagher has singlehandedly revived the ancient tradition of hand-embroidery on fine linens, a beautiful craft that had been declining due to modern manufacturing processes. Since the launch of its first collection, Malaika has been flourishing and expanding; now, it runs its own factory, enabling absolute control on quality and craftsmanship.
In 2018, Malaika founders went one big step further, and founded the Thread of Hope School, a place where women can learn a valuable skill and improve their economic standing. The school is a safe, welcoming environment where underprivileged women – including refugees from conflict zones- are given the opportunity to learn the art of embroidery and, when proficient, they can work from home or at the brand’s factory.
This graceful capsule collection is skillfully woven and hand-embroidered by the women trained at the school; each piece carries a story of hope and female empowerment. The designs are inspired by the Art Deco style of Downtown Cairo, the city’s beating heart of the 30s, where the Threads of Hope School proudly resides today. “The Art Deco Style became all the rage in the 30s, and Downtown Cairo continues to be a testament of this era in its architecture and flourishes,” tell us Malaika’s co-founders.
The collection is entirely handmade using the highest quality fabrics: the finest linen, and 320 thread count Egyptian cotton which softens with every wash, making it a timeless luxury. The products in the collection feature complex hand embroidery in a variety of methods, masterfully done by the talented women of Threads of Hope. This includes cross stitch, running stitch, satin stitch and elaborate pulled thread openwork, or ajour – a meticulous process which involves cutting and pulling individual threads to create the most intricate and delicate patterns.
The motifs are a fresh interpretation of geometric and floral patterns, available in a beautiful selection of vibrant colours; the linens can be monogrammed to create bespoke designs. The collection comprises gorgeous sets for the table – tablecloths, placemats and napkins- and luxurious bed linens.
