Many consider them a great product overall, with an excellent fit and strap adjustability. However, opinions vary on the fit and how tight the heel fits.

AI-generated from the text of customer reviews

243 customers mention "Comfort"208 positive35 negative

Customers find these sandals comfortable to wear. They are easy to put on and convenient for all occasions. The sandals feel like hiking boots, with a tighter fit around the heel only. However, the toes don't feel constricted and there is ample arch support. The firm non-yielding sole keeps the great toe from dorsiflexing when walking. The non-marking soles allow the foot to swell and breath on very long treks. While not too heavy, the sandals are well-made and sturdy, but not too bulky.

208 customers mention "Sandal quality"208 positive0 negative

Customers like the sandal quality. They say it's a perfect sandal, and their go-to footwear all summer. The break-in period was okay, and they are sturdy. Many consider them their favorite basic outdoor sandals, especially due to the available W width.

78 customers mention "Arch support"78 positive0 negative

226 customers mention "Fit"151 positive75 negative

Customers have different views on the fit of these sandals. Some find the fit perfect when ordered one size smaller than their usual size, and the sizing is easy. They appreciate the available wide width, which is a 2E or greater, and the longer strap. Others mention that the sizing is a bit odd, with fluctuating results between one whole size over the course of the season. The heel area is also smaller, so it's a tighter fit around the heel only.

"Sandals fit well - as-expected based on size. If you're a half-size, I'd err on the closest size down (I'm a 10.5, went with 10s and this fit great)...." Read more

123 customers mention "Strap adjustability"55 positive68 negative

Customers have mixed opinions about the strap adjustability. Some find the straps adjustable and wrap around their feet for comfortable support while hiking. Others mention that the tightening straps are too long, touching the floor or hanging off the back.

Chaco Men's Z1 Classic Sport Sandal
This is my first pair of Chaco's. Somehow I always overlooked these in the store. I bought this sandal to wear hiking in the Rockies. It was a good choice. They do hold on to your feet at a steep edge. I was descending on terrain I would not normally attempt in sandals. The straps held my feet without slipping and felt secure. I had at first thought I made a mistake wearing these hiking but after reaching the bottom I was confident that they would work for a hike in the mountains. A big advantage wearing these sandals is that your feet stay cool. In hiking boots my feet get hot.The adjustment strap is a bit long but in my case it does not touch the ground. I found it helpful to have the longer strap. I could tighten the strap quickly when climbing and loosen it afterwards for walking on flat ground. I like the snug fit when climbing but prefer a little looser when walking on a flat trail.Walking on a wet surface had the same grip feeling as wearing a hiking boot. The bottom of the sandal does look like a hiking boot sole.I measured the weight of each sandal and oddly one weighs more than the other. The left sandal was 11.2 oz and the right sandal was 14.2oz. This is for size 9.I also purchased the Chaco mega Z cloud and it too had different weighting per sandal. And the right sandal was the heavier one. Must be a manufacturing issue. I don't notice the weight difference when on my feetThe straps didn't cause and irritation at all. I wore them on several short walks before hiking a longer trail. But I have been wearing sandals all day for 6 months or so and that might have prepared my feet for these straps. After about 1 day I started to feel like the heal was too narrow. I ordered the medium width which is my normal width. I stopped at a local shop and tried on a wide version of the same sandal and the heal was wider but it felt too wide, too much sliding around in the heel.. My foot had a bit of movement that I thought was too much. After experiencing steep terrain I am glad I kept the medium width, you need a snug fit to walk a steep incline. Any movement can throw your balance off.The width feeling was due to the cup at the heal of the sandal. Most sandals are shaped at the heal. However these sandals have a heel cup which has a different feel but it is what makes it possible to walk a rocky steep trail while holding your foot stable. The foot arch of the sandal is high. Much more arch than any other sandal I have seen. And my foot does well after walking in them for several hours. I feel the arch is really helpful.Summary, feels like wearing a hiking boot. Highly recommend for trail use or walking in general. I feel confident the straps will not break easily and I should get some indication when they wear out. I have had other high quality sandals look ok but suddenly snap while wearing them. Not great when a few miles out. I typically walk around 5 miles on a walk using these sandals. No issues wearing them. I have walked around 10+ miles in theses sandals and no issues to report yet. After wearing these sandals for a month or so I have found them incredible. I prefer these over any other sandal or shoe for walking. There are nicer looking sandals but not as comfortable or as good of traction as these.

Sandals fit well - as-expected based on size. If you're a half-size, I'd err on the closest size down (I'm a 10.5, went with 10s and this fit great). But what I'd really recommend is buying both sizes through Amazon's try-before-you-buy program. Super easy to try both and send one pair back.

Support is nice - more than you'd expect from a sandal. I've had these for a whole summer season and been on multiple beach trips in and out of the water, and they still look brand new (though I am making sure to rinse them in fresh water after being in the salt). I'd feel confident & comfortable wearing these all day in most (open-toe-safe!) scenarios.

Only gripe is that the straps you pull on to secure the sandals are ~2" too long, the way they fit my feet anyway. I feel like that's not a real criticism though, it'd take like 20 minutes to shorten them myself.

I bought a pair of these Chacos a few months ago in preparation for a trip to Orlando, though I’ve been using them daily ever since. My wife has bought multiple since we were married and finally convinced me to try them out. These have been the best sandals I’ve ever owned. While they take a bit to get used to, they rubbed my big toes raw for the first two weeks or so, they’re now super comfortable and no longer agitate my feet. They’re really durable to where I would happily where them on a hike. I’ll definitely be buying another pair when these wear out.

The only downside is that the strap used to tighten the sandals is pretty long and hangs off the back several inches. I’ve had to tie on some rubber bands to keep them secure.

As reference for the image, I usually wear a size 11.5-12 shoes so I got size 12 Chacos.

This is my fifth repair of Z1 Chaco’s. I love them. The key to having comfortable Chaco’s is to adjust the straps correctly. You need a finger’s width of slack between your foot and each strap. They have great arch support, which I need. They require no break in period. I can walk miles in them. Soles today have better wet traction than the first two pair I had, which were like walking on ice when surfaces were wet. Today’s soles are nearly as good on wet surfaces as the Teva’s I usually wear in wet weather. I don’t care much for the color pattern of the straps, but who actually looks at my feet.

The first pair of chacos I owned didn’t end up getting worn very much, and were perhaps a different model. After seeing these on sale in a strategist article, I pulled the trigger. Hands down the best sandals (and some of the best shoes overall) that I own. Excellent for floating the river, walking dogs, running errands, and apparently hiking. They feel great on my feet and the black is neutral enough they “go” with lots of things. Excellent overall sandals, can’t recommend them enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid simple sandals with no velcro
Reviewed in Canada on October 23, 2023
I love sandals and wear then all summer. However I hate Velcro. Hate the sound, hate that is sucks up lint, and especially hate that after a while it does not hold as well. Buckles are the answer.

These Chacos, have a great footbed with solid arch support. Simple strap system makes on and off simple and fast, yet they are secure and don't move around then you climb over rocks or splash through creeks. Very solid construction, these sandals will not wear out after a season. And they have BUCKLES!

Only downside is that they are heavier than some other sandals.
