From the manufacturer

About us

HARIO has been planning, manufacturing and selling heatproof glass since its very inception — and is the only manufacturer with a heatproof glass factory in Japan. Initially, we manufactured and sold laboratory glassware. But in 1948, we began making coffee siphons by taking advantage of the properties of heatproof glass and our refined glass processing techniques.

We later expanded into a wide range of popular home products made from various materials. Since the 1980s, we’ve been producing industrial glass for automotive light lenses. We also offer items for coffee and tea (black, Japanese and herbal), as well as microwave-safe cooking utensils and other kitchenware. In the next 100 years, we want to continue enhancing the lives of everyone who loves HARIO and keep creating products that people consider their favorites.

Noticeable improvement and difference over rice cooked with an electric rice cooker. Following instructions- rice comes out fully, cooked, not over cooked and is a slight chewy texture (short grain rice). I live how each individual grain is cooked the same. So one doesn’t get pockets of part hard & part mushy. It’s not too dry or too wet but spot on the right moist and texture. In a good way, you can notice and taste each individual grain. I don’t know how to describe it but the resulting rice is basically fabulous. I did have to take pictures of the instructions and use Google translate, to follow manufacture recommendations. A little bit of extra work, but not a big deal. I will post pictures of translated instructions- since many have commented. The pot is sturdy, functional and it does not have to be seasoned. It looks like this is probably factory (Tokyo Japan) made or not handmade. However, its solid won’t chip as easily. I cook on gas stove, medium flame heat as instructed. It took about 12 minutes to boil from room temp. Mine does have an audible whistle, but it’s fairly soft so it’s good to be close by to visibly watch or listen.

I bought this on a recommendation from someone who lived in Japan for years. We eat a lot of rice, so I thought it was worth the splurge. It makes fantastic rice, but it took some experiments to find the optimal rice, amount of rice, amount of water, cooking time, and heat level. I toasted a few pots of rice on the bottom by accident, but we fight over the crispy rice (as long as it’s not charcoal, it is delicious). My rice is fluffy and not wet at all. I’ve made various short grain rice from sushi type, idli, and Thai rice. I’ve also made basmati and jasmine, and while they do require different cooking time and water, they were fluffy and each grain separate. I’m really happy with it so far.

I haven’t heard much of a whistle, but I now recognize the softer sounds it makes to let me know how cooked the rice is. Cleanup is easy, and my partner ran it through the dishwasher without thinking. It caused no problems, but it’s easy to soak and rinse by hand.

There’s only maybe three minor negatives that I can think of. 1 - the directions are only in Japanese and Google translate can only do so much. A lot of the nuanced language was lost, and I bet it is very useful information to have. 2 - the bottom of the pot isn’t coated, so it will scratch whatever surface it is on unless you are very careful how you move it. I have a ceramic topped electric stove, so I can’t easily push it off the burner when it gets hot. I just have to remind myself constantly that I must lift the pot to prevent damage. 3 - there are no handles to lift the pot, you have use potholders to lift and move the pot. All in all, though, I’m really very happy with the functionality, and it’s a beautiful pot that I display happily on my counter.

This is the best rice cooker ever. I love rice and could make a museum out of all the pressure cookers, rice cookers, and rice pots I have used. They all can cook the rice to varying degrees and flavor, and convenience. Amazon is not giving you the full story and is costing them sales. I went to the website for Hairo and electric is fine. They tell how to use it. I am glass top electric, and it has performed very well. The pot absorbs so much heat it boils for minutes after taking it off of the stove. It is like all Japanese things; it is beautiful as well as functional. The best thing is that the flavor of the rice is 100x more fragrant with those types of rice. I am going to buy the next larger size too. New rice experience!!!

This rice cooker is a lot bigger than it looks online. As someone who still prefers to cook rice on the stove rather than in an electric rice cooker this is perfect. Coming from the staub rice cooker to this is a complete upgrade. No more spill overs in the stovetop. The domed lid that fits on the high rimmed clay pot is great for catching the boil over. And most importantly, the rice is cooked perfectly and when done a gentle whisper will sound for you. Love this clay pot.

My mom is a traditional Asian American, she always enjoying cooking rice the traditional way, because she believes the traditional way gets the best of nutritions out of the rice and the heart of love.🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 It is very small but easy to use! Smooth finish, and we don’t need to worry about the toxins come from cookwares ( rice cook is better done in a non sticky pot, but most nonstick pot can release toxins in high heat). BUT this one is very small but can get 2 cups rice no problem, if you have more people, you definitely need the larger one! Yummy! And warm loves from my mom! She enjoys this lovely thanksgiving gift!

which is what I needed. Unfortunately, this wretched rice maker (moi) burned the rice and destroyed the finish on the bottom of the bowl. Pilot error? Possibly. Never-the-less, I don't dare cook rice in the black bowl again. What works for me is the top-- it fits just inside a stainless-steel sauce pan of mine, and if I follow the directions on the package of rice, it comes out ok. This is a win for me, but I repeat: this rice cooker is not foolproof...

I am short for space in my kitchen so a plug in rice cooker is not an option and have always been a stovetop in a pot kinda guy. Was visiting friends who had this cooker and my kids all freaked out how good the rice was when in the Hario. So light and fluffy, rice literally stands up when its finished. Already a huge fan of Hario's coffee products, this one earns its space on my shelf.

I am a bit dissappointed to find that the instructions are all in Japanese.
It's not that difficult for a big company like Hario to have English instructions.
    I might be returning this.

5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on March 11, 2025
    Size: 3-CupColor: BlackVerified Purchase
