The mysterious true story of Connie Converse—a mid-century New York City songwriter, singer, and composer whose haunting music never found broad recognition—and one writer’s quest to understand her life

This is the mesmerizing story of an enigmatic life. When musician and
New Yorker contributor Howard Fishman first heard Connie Converse’s voice on a recording, he was convinced she could not be real. Her recordings were too good not to know, and too out of place for the 1950s to make sense—a singer who seemed to bridge the gap between traditional Americana (country, blues, folk, jazz, and gospel), the Great American Songbook, and the singer-songwriter movement that exploded a decade later with Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.

And then there was the bizarre legend about Connie Converse that had become the prevailing narrative of her life: that in 1974, at the age of fifty, she simply drove off one day and was never heard from again. Could this have been true? Who was Connie Converse, really?

Supported by a dozen years of research, travel to everywhere she lived, and hundreds of extensive interviews, Fishman approaches Converse’s story as both a fan and a journalist, and expertly weaves a narrative of her life and music, and of how it has come to speak to him as both an artist and a person. Ultimately, he places her in the canon as a significant outsider artist, a missing link between a now old-fashioned kind of American music and the reflective, complex, arresting music that transformed the 1960s and music forever.

But this is also a story of deeply secretive New England traditions, of a woman who fiercely strove for independence and success when the odds were against her; a story that includes suicide, mental illness, statistics, siblings, oil paintings, acoustic guitars, cross-country road trips, 1950s Greenwich Village, an America marching into the Cold War, questions about sexuality, and visionary, forward thinking about race, class, and conflict. It’s a story and subject that is by turn hopeful, inspiring, melancholy, and chilling.

“‘
To Anyone’ is the grandly researched portrait of a talent who didn’t get her due…a rich paean to [Converse’s music], and to the profound connections that art can form between individuals, even decades apart.”—The Washington Post

“Gripping and searching… Mr. Fishman’s thoughtful and deeply researched book provides a far bolder jolt than any cover version can provide. It may yet help find for Converse what the author proposes—a place at ‘the table of great American artists and thinkers.’”
—The Wall Street Journal

“Packed with detective-level details about a Renaissance woman whose work passed through this world all but unnoticed”
—The Boston Globe

“So powerful…A totemic accomplishment and indispensable guide…written with Robert Caro–esque thoroughness. The exhaustive care with which Fishman approaches his subject is itself hypnotic, even devastating.”
—Los Angeles Review of Books

“Deeply researched and absorbing… Fishman’s book will resonate with Converse devotees and introduce others to this fascinating and overlooked artist.”
Booklist, *starred review*

“Fishman debuts with a rich biography of Elizabeth “Connie” Converse… Fishman’s research is nothing short of remarkable… Fishman succeeds wildly in uncovering the anguish and beauty in Converse’s bewildering story. This should earn Converse some new fans.”
—Publishers Weekly

“[Fishman’s] enthusiasm and diligence is infectious… Through the obsession of such dedicated fans as Fishman, Connie Converse will find a larger audience.”
—Kirkus

“Musician, culture writer, and playwright Fishman’s extraordinary trek through the life and works of Connie Converse is a laudable endeavor… the author constructs an emotional narrative.” —Library Journal

“Converse’s story is a natural fit for our cultural moment of reclamation and long-delayed rectification…The closest we’re ever likely to come to the cypher behind those beautiful, heartsick songs.”
—The New Republic

"The book is more than a timeline: it’s a quest. Starting with the fateful house party, we ride along with Fishman as he discovers each clue that pulls him through to the next nugget of Converse’s story... The quest not only lends the book the propulsive drive of a mystery unfolding, but also becomes the book’s shadow argument: the art and life of this forgotten woman is worth the work it takes to properly remember her."
—Ugly Things

"An accomplished biography unravelling a decades-long mystery surrounding the complex life and subsequent disappearance of folk outlier Connie Converse... Meticulously researched and richly told."
Louder Than War, "Best Books of 2023"

“The marvel of this book is that it doesn’t require that you be a fan of Connie Converse’s music to appreciate it. It stands alone as a mystery, an investigation, a portrait, and a poignant story of drifting and dreaming. Fishman artfully draws the reader into his obsession and quest to understand this enigmatic artist and her work.”
—Susan Orlean, New York Times bestselling author of The Orchid Thief and The Library Book

“The mystery of American composer Connie Converse’s disappearance in 1974 is ongoing, and she may be lost forever. But her spectacular work has been rescued and elevated to a marvelous level by Howard Fishman. Her music belongs to an America that barely knows it exists.” —
William Kennedy, Pulitzer-prize winning author of Ironweed

“Connie Converse’s songs are a revelation, finely wrought, wry, as beautiful as they are weird. I’m so grateful this enigmatic writer and her catalog are being explored and celebrated, in this book and beyond.”—Anaïs Mitchell, Tony- and Grammy-winning creator of Hadestown, and author, Working on a Song

"Howard Fishman proves himself not only to be an expert biographer but a major thinker about American culture... In Fishman’s hands, the life, music, and mystery of Connie Converse reads like a novel—and a quintessentially American story."
—Seth Rogovoy, WAMC

"Carried me along like a meandering stream that was sometimes a roaring river. A great achievement."
—Greil Marcus, author of Mystery Train

"To Anyone Who Ever Asks brings a new and original freshness to its account of the New York folk scene and all that happened after. This is not the sepia-tinted folk narrative, but a story where very complex characters turn out to be the greatest makers of art. Howard Fishman's work is powerful, moving, challenging, a must for all who care about the period and its songs."—Rick Moody, author ofThe Long Accomplishment

In this biography, he seeks to know the enigmatic Converse, who is now a cult favorite among music aficionados.”—
Orange County Register

I gotta say I was nervous to start this book since I'm not a music aficionado and knew zilch about Connie Converse. However I was immediately pulled into her world. I couldn't stop reading and tore through the whole book in a matter of days. Just an incredible story and an extraordinary human being. Howard Fishman is a beautiful writer and I was immediately swept up in the world of 1940s/50s NY. By the end of the book my heart ached. I have no idea how he accomplished this incredible feat of research, but I'm so thankful he did. Thank you Connie for putting your work into the world, even if it wasn't ready for it, and thank you Howard for bringing us this story before it was lost to time.

I will start off this review with my opinion that Mr. Fishman is not an experienced biographer. However, his love of music and culture (not necessarily popular culture) is what makes this book most engaging to anyone to fall under the spell of Connie Converse. I was continually taking notes of artists I need to listen to in the future from the text. I first became aware of Connie Converse in December 2022 and spent about a month listening to How Sad How Lonely on a daily basis. After reading this book, I think I may know her a little better than I did from just the music. I was hit very strongly on an emotional level towards the end of the book, not even attempting to hold back the tears - clearly this is indicative to me that the author wrote a most memorable and thoughtful biography. There is a certain amount of speculation that was based on logic - and none that I found exploitive. Hopefully the end result will expose Connie Converse's music to an ever wider audience.

Kudos to Mr. Fishman on job well done.

Note - if the long rumored Connie Converse Box Set is ever released, I can only hope that Mr. Fishman authors the liner notes.

Thank you, Howard, for this brilliantly researched, insightful, deep dive into the life and music of Connie Converse. The author's curiosity, attention to detail, and understanding of music history are of great service to the book, providing a rich context for Connie Converse's life and work. In a narrative that is mesmerizing, Howard recalls how at a party in 2010 he heard one of Connie Converse's songs, which literally changed his life. Howard embarked on what turned out to be a 13-year quest to learn all he could about Connie Converse, which led to his writing this extraordinary book. Howard takes the reader on this journey of discovery with him, sharing his insights, reflections, and sense of wonder. For me, reading this book and listening to the audio book has been an incredibly rich, educational, and profound experience.

I just want to express my profound gratitude for this remarkable book. Ive been in such a daze since picking it up 2 week ago.

Fishmans unique position as the author shines through, as his questions around the life and mysteries of Connie Converse reveal that it takes one to truly understand another. As a struggling, deeply passionate, and curious artist and songwriter myself, I found his every perspective and analysis deeply relatable. Especially his exploration of the emotional and psychological toll of being a creative person in this world.

Im grateful to Fishman for doing the necessary work of shedding light on the enigmatic life and work of Connie Converse. This book has left an indelible mark on my creative spirit, and I’m grateful for the inspiration it has ignited within me.

99% of us, perhaps more, have never heard of Connie Converse. But once you read this book, you'll say "OK, now I have to listen to her music." And once you do THAT (it's on Spotify, etc.), you'll say "OK, how have I never heard of her?" That's because Connie, back in the early 1950s, was developing a unique folk music sound that--well, it was unique. Well worth the read, a fascinating story. Oh and did I mention that she mysteriously disappeared when....

I really enjoyed reading this biography of Connie Converse. Up until now, so little has been known about her, but Fishman's book goes to great lengths to present a three-dimensional portrait of a very complex person. It also appropriately contextualizes her artistic merit/output—which was obviously overlooked in her own time, but means something completely different today.

Connie was living "On the Road" years before its publication (and at precisely the same time Kerouac was crisscrossing the country) and she was among the first musical poets to come out of Greenwich Village (years before Dylan even moved there). It would seem she lived three distinct lives, reinventing herself several times over.

Connie's last chapter in life may still be a mystery (spoiler alert!) but Fishman's reverent narrative brings us along for a compelling ride through her known life. Bravo!

Howard Fishman brings to us the life of Connie Converse, a talented singer-songwriter, musician, artist and poet whose art was not recognized by her own generation, but now may be enjoyed by this and future generations. I enjoyed reading the book while simultaneously listening to Converse’s music, sung and recorded by herself more than a half century ago. Howard thoroughly researched all aspects of Connie’s life and her mysterious disappearance in August of 1974. He leaves us to ponder what her life would have been had she only gotten the one big break that could have steered her in a different direction. I highly recommend reading the book and listening to Converse’s music. You will be glad that you did.

Brilliant and brilliantly readable. Early to research on Ms Converse, Mr Fishman was able to speak to many who knew her but are no longer with us. And through the thoroughness of his research he reveals a woman of great complexity, many interests and dimensions. And achievements, beyond the Guitar Songs we know her for, especially her pioneering work in Conflict Resolution. I continue to return to the Guitar Songs, which are endlessly beguiling, but am grateful to know more about a remarkable woman, thanks to Mr Fishman's book.

This true story will haunt you as it kinda did Howard, but it will be difficult to put down. Connie suffered in so many ways that she didn't deserve and then disappeared in 1974. It makes my heart bleed for her! It's not a short story and digs deep into her music.

As a musican and a big Connie Converse fan myself, I especially appreciated the fact that this book was written by a musician. The author does an excellent job weaving together a complicated story about one of the most unique and unknown artist of her time. Not an easy task by any means, it is done with respect and real insight into what it is to be an artist and a professional musician in both her time and our current paradigm. Very interesting read.

Thanks to Howard Fishman's extraordinary research and wonderful book we now know more about this enigmatic star that never shone as brightly as she should. Thanks to this book, maybe now is the time for a worldwide appreciation of a singer, who was a decade or more ahead of others, long before Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Her problem was that she wanted to shine and be invisible at the same time. And in the 70s she drove off in her Beetle and became invisible. But no more. I hope this book will lead to a rerelease of her album (that now costs over $400) and unreleased recordings of her 50+ songs.
