Great screen, not great finish

Great screen, not great finish
Love the kindle and this version is no exception, nice and smooth to change page, responsive screen and clear text. What i dislike is the fact that the matt finish on the back isn’t very good, only got this in July and it’s not used loads yet the matt finish has worn off where my fingers hold the device. While you shouldn’t have to, buy a case that covers the back when being held
Thank you for your feedback

I really wasn’t sure I wanted a kindle as I have a tablet and a smart phone all with the kindle app. However, having invested in a kindle I’m now a convert. The paper white is lightweight (far lighter than a tablet) and I like the page colour as it’s not overly bright like a smartphone - which I felt was giving me blind spots in my eyes when reading. I like the fact that I can increase the text size so reading has become much more comfortable to do. I also like the fact that I can read and turn pages with ease and without my arms aching - especially in bed or at the table whilst having a coffee/food. The ads only appear on the home screen and not whilst reading the book - something I was worried about when I bought the ads included version. This kindle fits in my smallish handbag so I can take it with me. There’s a back light on the screen to help read at night but it’s more comfortable to read from that a smartphone or tablet and of course no distractions from any smartphone notifications. Yes I recommend this. Looking forward to taking it on holiday to use by the pool.

This is the 12th generation kindle, Paperwhite 5, released October 2021. I am comparing it with my previous Kindle Paperwhite (11th generation, Paperwhite 4), released November 2018).

I bought the normal Paperwhite 5 - not the Signature edition (adds wireless recharging, 32GB memory).

Overall I am very happy with this new release. It is expensive, although the (current) free offer on Kindle Unlimited, which I have anyway, takes the price down to around £100.

Here is why I bought it:

I mostly use my Kindle to read in bed at night, with the lights off. I do not want my eyes be blue light exposed, in fact I want all my night vision to remain

Kindle Paperwhite 4 was a step backwards from earlier Paperwhites in that the minimum on backlight setting (1) was too bright. In a dark room with dark-adjusted eyes the Paperwhite 4 glows like a torch shining light on a wall. If you switch it to the dark mode (white text on dark background), as I do, this glow is less bad, but still exists. I have no idea why Amazon did this - I guess the designers just did not think.

Paperwhite 5 makes this better in two ways. The backlight has adjustable color between white as before and amber. Also the lowest setting of the backlight is very low. I use (at night) full amber setting, and for me the most comfortable read is with dark mode and backlight around 5 or 6. This overall has very little light (can't see it on wall) and is bright enough, just to be able to see that the display is amber not white. If you reduce the backlight level much more this display looks white because your eyes lose color perception at such a low level.

For me this is now perfect, much more comfortable than the previous blue-white color and also I can reduce overall brightness to exactly the level I like.

It is good that the exact color is adjustable - some will not like full amber - and that the brightness is properly adjustable.

There is a scheduler that switches amber color on automatically when the sun sets, or you can set times yourself manually.

Other changes, which for those without my particular interest in low-light backlight at night may be more relevant, are:

    1. It is larger. I was not sure whether I would like this - but I do. It is still easy to hold, and fewer page turns is good.

    2. Page turns are noticeably faster, which is nice.

    3. Control of page turns by touching edge of page are now more reliable. (Some people swipe to change page - I don't).

    4. Battery lasts longer in the case that you are reading a lot.

I did not buy the Signature edition because 8GB is enough for a lot. it might be different if I was using audible books but I am not. I addition I could not see the point of the wireless charging - you would have to place the kindle on a stand when finished which in the dark is more difficult, and anyway it lasts a very long time.

Note also the the new not as bad Kindle UI that lets you go direct to library is common to all kindles, not a feature of the new one. One comment on the Kindle UI. Amazon seems mostly to ignore people like me who have a lot of books and want a compact list to select from in the reader. In the latest UI they have collapsed all books in a series into a single item which is a big help - although still not enough.

So: Kindles are still great e-readers, in spite of their lacks, and being bound to Amazon e-books. This one is now perfect for usability except for the kindle lack of sensible navigation around books. That for me is a price worth paying.

Colour: BlackVersion: 8 GBStyle Name: With AdsOffer Type: Without Kindle UnlimitedVerified Purchase
    Christmas has come early.
We have been using Kindles since they first came out, and we are a great fan of e-reader.
In our opinion this is the e-reader to rule them all.
We didn’t upgrade to the last generation, as we were waiting for our old ones to pass on - they didn’t, despite all the abuse we gave them. So we can’t say how much better this is than the last version but compared to earlier ones, the improvement is outstanding.
Set up was very easy for both of us. Update the Kindle app for your phone, and enable “Amazon Device Simple Set-up” in the apps setting. Switch on the Kindle, set language and country and select set up from phone. Job done. One Kindle picked up the WiFi password from a stored one on Amazon, while my wife’s one needed the password entered (this took three attempts, and got an odd failed message on the Kindle for the first two times). Pretty much totally painless and took about five minutes each.
The display is flawless. Just like a printed book. Even under a magnifying glass the font looks good, and small font display is outstanding. Pinch zoom in/out for font size is very responsive, just slightly shy of active led displays like iPads etc. The backlight is very even and makes reading in the dark a joy.
However, the speed improvement of the device it the feature that makes you weep for joy. Searches appear like magic, switching in the library between All and Downloaded no long makes you think the device has crashed. Pressing the home key works without the five minute wait (I exaggerate a little). Even Goodreads actually displays without an hour long wait, and personalised recommendations appear appear like fairy dust.
Finally, opening a book, is less than a second - brilliant or what?
I can’t testify to battery life, given that it is supposed to be a month, but I don’t doubt it will be anything other than outstanding given the past performance of our old Kindles. Also, joy of joys, gone are the rubbish power connectors that only go in one way. Hurrah for USB-C power connectors, and we can use our Ipad leads and chargers too, when on holiday.
So, if you are in any doubt, just get one, it’s great. The only other choice would be if you use audible books and want more storage; but if you just read books, you are never going to fill up 8GB of memory.
