It has not disappointed! It was a replacement for my >15 year old Silvia Rancilio.
It has taken very little effort to perfect my shots. I love that the steamer has its own thermal block so there is no waiting to steam my milk after pulling shots.
It is slightly larger than the Rancilio but basic same footprint on my counter.
Overall, the Diletta Mio is an incredible machine for a first espresso machine. I've been using it for about thre weeks paired with a Eureka Mignon Zero, making 2-3 drinks a day.
Pros:
- Aesthetics and Form Factor:
- It's beautiful and very functional! I personally love the understated matte case machine with pops of Chrome, and the proportions say 'espresso machine' to me. Personally, I think it's one of the most beautiful machines out there.
- It has a large and functional cup warming area, benefiting from the boiler right below it, and the rails allow me to stack my gear safely. The side loading is what allows this huge area.
- The side-loading water tank has proven hugely convenient to me too. All of this works great in a small kitchen.
- It has a huge drip tray that's easy to remove and clean.
- Fast, Consistent Heating: I haven't timed it, but it heats up very fast, and with the boiler right above the brew group, the group and portafilter warms up quickly.
- Shot Pulling: This machine does not have a lot of adjustments, so for a newbie it's allowed me to focus on grind, dose, puck prep and temperature. I've gotten a few great shots from it - so any limitations are from my ability. It does have an OPV valve but I haven't adjusted it. Shows 9-10 when I get my shot correct. It seems to have a gradual draw-up pressure time. I've been wondering if I get a little preinfusion in that fashion, but not sure.
- Decent Steaming: While not a slam dunk, the thermo-block powered steamer seems easy enough to use for a beginner. One key tip is to do one quick purge to remove the water before steaming, but then it's good to go. I've been only steaming small (4 oz) milk drinks (my pref) and the single-hole nozzle heats it quickly and with control. When I tried the double-hole nozzle it was honestly way too fast and out of control for such a small amount of milk. Probably good for lattes.
- Decent Included Accessories: The included portafilter and have a nice weight and feel to them. They were considerably heavier than those included with a Profitec Go.
Cons:
- No Steam Control Knob: Steam is controlled via an on/off button and doesn't have the traditional knob to control it. I'm guessing this is a trade-off with a thermoblock, unless extra electronics are added. Needed? Maybe not but would improve the user experience.
- Advanced Shot Controls: While far beyond my beginner needs, I'd have happily paid an extra $100 for some kind of flow control and/or pre-infusion. I imagine it's possible to dimmer-mod the machine at least, but I'm not ready to drill a hole into that beautiful case yet. Also, I'd prefer to follow the lead of others in the community, which brings to ?
- Small User Community: The Mio is a Seattle Coffee Gear specific variant of Quick Mill Silvana Evo. There's few owners of this machine out there, and I think some early quality control issues made others hesitate. I did join a Silvana Evo Facebook group, but that's also pretty small. I also created a Mio specific Facebook group if anyone wants to join! Semi-related - SCG really needs to improve their online marketing. After months of research, I had no idea SCG had a Bay Area location. Buying the machine in person sealed the deal for me!
- Weak User Manual: The Mio has a practically non-existent user manual. The Profitec Go manual I saw was thorough on usage, cleaning schedule, and had a complete parts breakdown included. I found some of this looking at Silvana Evo manuals, but come on SCG - work on the manual!
