About

Bringing their neo-psychedelic flavor to a whole new generation of fans, the Flaming Lips released their most recent album, The Terror, in April 2013. Later in the year, they released Peace Sword, an EP of songs inspired by the film Ender's Game. The Flaming Lips have constantly been on tour during the past three years, with an average of two dates per month. It's an impressive schedule, to say the least, especially if you're familiar with how one-of-a-kind the band's live shows are. At any moment, ticket buyers can expect anything from puppets to video animation, confetti-filled balloons and colored smoke shows at a Flaming Lips concert. Frontman Wayne Coyne then steps into a giant plastic bubble and walks on top of the audience – crowdsurfing at its most nuanced. The Terror lends itself well to live interpretation, invoking as it does the dystopian psychology of science fiction novels. Surrealist antics on stage reflect the wonderfully dark tone of the album. Songs like the title track and "Butterfly, How Long it Takes to Die" are hauntingly beautiful, cathartic songs about love and loss, life and death.

Wayne Coyne, his brother, Mark, and their friend, Michael Ivins founded the band in 1983. After several personnel changes, the band finally found a winning formula, and pretty soon, was cranking out albums. Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, released in 1993, hit the charts, received critical acclaim and earned the band a spot at Lollapalooza. The single, "She Don't Use Jelly," inspired a cult following and reached No. 55 on Billboard's Top 100. Coyne and company followed with several more albums, each one offering a new spin, new concept and new set of rules by which the band continued to remain fresh year after year.

    Great Show

by DP on 4/30/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

Traveled from dallas to Birmingham for this show after seeing the Flaming Lips in Dallas earlier this year. They always put on a great show. The people and facility were also very nice! Bar staff was great. The venue is very intimate. My new personal favorite outdoor venue.

    Awestruck

by Flaming Lips Bham on 4/29/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

I have been a musician for 45 years and have followed, and listened to many bands. I had never had the opportunity to see this band live and frankly haven't followed their musical journey. Rather than beat myself up for it I went to see this live show with my wife. She hadn't listened to them much before the show either. We not only enjoyed the visual antics and stage show but we loved the music and the band's vibe. The evening, the venue, the band, and their music, made for an amazing experience!

    Absolutely Amazing Show

by Stephen on 4/27/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

First, the venue, Avondale Brewing, was fantastic. Friendly staff and very safe. Beer was dang good as well. The band sounded amazing and The Flaming Lips always puts on an entertaining show. So many props and confetti that add entertaining value to their performance. The band really appeared to be having a great time and they genuinely seem to care about putting on a great show, which they did! Any opportunity I have to attend a Flaming Lips show in the future, I’ll be there.

A feast for the eyes and the soul

by John on 4/26/24Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

I've heard for years that I should see the Lips and now I get it. Visually and sonically stunning from beginning to end. Positively uplifting, and seeing them from the preferred pit at the Avondale couldn't be beaten.

The FLaming Lips, Best Live Concert Ever

by Colby C. on 11/13/23Music Hall At Fair Park - Dallas

I've seen The Flaming Lips a couple dozen times and it is always a unique and intimate experience. Wayne Coyne always does an incredible job of ensuring everyone is safe and that it is okay to feel sadness, and happiness and yell anytime you want. Let's not forget Seven Drodz, who is the musical mastermind behind The Flaming Lips. Watching him do his thing is breathtaking. Their shows are out of this world, and crazy and are a great reminder of how a band should treat their audience and what a live concert should be like. LOVE LOVE LOVE

by Re on 11/12/23Music Hall At Fair Park - Dallas

Saw them live during the release of this album and it was amazing and what got me hooked on them. Now 20 years later it was even better. Wayne can lead a crowd like no other!
