Editorial Reviews
Deluxe opaque yellow colored vinyl LP pressing. Hot Hot Heat's classic debut album, filled with smart, energetic, dance-punk hits, returns to vinyl with this fully remastered LP edition. Following closely on the heels of their critically acclaimed Knock Knock Knock EP, Make Up the Breakdown is Hot Hot Heat's first full-length, recorded with Jack Endino at Vancouver, BC's Mushroom Studios. Make Up the Breakdown delivered on the promise hinted at on the EP. Hot Hot Heat blended angular post-punk twitch with danceable pop, effectively (and finally) persuading white dopes on punk to get on the good foot in the early 2000s.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2011I absolutely love this band. I've been listening to them for about 7 years now. They're very upbeat and have a unique sound that I'm quite fond of. This album wasn't available anywhere for download, I'm pretty sure it wasn't even on iTunes. I always prefer to have a hard copy to play in my car, anyway. I also enjoy the cover art on CDs, another reason why I prefer them over just downloads. But no one I knew even owned the CD, since Hot Hot Heat is kind of an obscure band. Anyway, this is a great album. I recommend it. It's probably one of their better albums, although all of them are great! Also, Amazon sells CDs for cheaper than I can get them at any store, and they're not censored. So, great CD, great price, how can anyone argue with that?!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2013Awesome! Love it! I recommend this to everyone because it is awesome! It is a very cool item to have!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2011OK, so i don't really remember what songs were on this cd, i purchased 3 hot hot heat cd's off here at the same time, but they were all good.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2018I love this album. The singer's unique voice reminds me a little of Robert Smith's voice of The Cure. If you're a fan of The Cure, you will enjoy this.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 20132 songs I enjoyed, The dance with me song and the bandages song, the other ones just sound like it was thrown together real quick. I'm open to more of their music but if I only like 2x songs on the next CD, im probably going to skip out entirely on the rest of their albums.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2006Make Up the Breakdown. It's definently one of my favorite albums ever. The opener, Naked In The City Again, is a sort of song that builds over time and starts with low vocals that become higher. The chorus is fantastic, and it has some fabulous guitar. No, Not Now is a catchy tune with lots of synth, and an awesome music video as well. The next ditty, Get In Or Get Out, has a wonderful keyboard solo and has a great beat. It'll make you want to dance. "Ugly or pretty, it's still my city." Next is Bandages. Bandages. This is probably HHH's most popular song off the album, I've heard it had substantial radio play in the UK in 2002-3. It's so darn catchy, and you gotta love it. Personally, it's a favorite of mine from this album. Following Bandages is the witty Oh, Goddamnit, a song with an awesome vocal intro and the rhythm of Steve Bays' vocals are so unique. This song has many different melodies and parts, making for a truly different and wonderful tune. I LOVE it. Aveda is next, a slightly random song with some great synth during the chorus. "Gonna walk right through this town and laugh, with a crowd of strangers chasin' me" begins the next song, This Town. This song is hard to describe, you need to hear it for yourselves. Definently a highlight of Make Up The Breakdown. It's amazing. Ahh, the cowbell. A cure for fevers for some, for Talk To Me, Dance With Me, a cowbell begins the song. One of the singles off of this cd, Talk to Me, Dance With Me is a wonderful dance song, and very fun to sing along to. Save us S.O.S. is a great song with a catchy bridge about an exit door, and the final song, In Cairo, is a slower song with plenty of piano. In conclusion, I think this album is definently worth purchasing. You'll love it, and listen to it over and over.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2003Well, you could say that this album is really good, and really average at the same time. It is a great buy (4.5 stars), but really needs a little more polish, or common sense. Had the artist taken the best tracks off of this cd and all the EP tracks, they would have a classic. As it stands, Make Up The Breakdown is one of the top albums of the year - because the good tracks make up for the ineptness of the rest. Here is a track by track breakdown of the album, and what the EP offered:
1. Naked in the City Again 9/10
2. No, Not Now 10/10
3. Get in or Get Out 9/10
4. Bandages 11/10
5. Oh, Godamnit 10/10
6. Aveda 9/10
7. This Town 7/10
8. Talk to Me, Dance With Me 10/10
9. Save Us S.O.S. 3/10
10. In Cairo 5/10
Knock, Knock, Knock EP
1. le Low 9/10
2. 5 Times Out of 100 10/10
3. Have a Good Sleep 9/10
4. Touch You Touch You 9/10
5. More for Show 8/10
As you can see, the end of the album is weak and should have been replaced by the EP songs if they hadn't been released. So what did I do? I just ripped the EP and album, both of which I bought, and formed a classic:
1. Naked in the City Again 9/10
2. No, Not Now 10/10
3. Get in or Get Out 9/10
4. Bandages 11/10
5. Oh, Godamnit 10/10
6. Le Le Low 9/10
7. 5 Times Out of 100 10/10
8. Aveda 9/10
9. Talk to Me, Dance With Me 10/10
10. Have a Good Sleep 9/10
11. Touch You Touch You 9/10
12. More for Show 8/10
You'll find this more to your liking, but the original cd is already really good! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars New New Wave
With the current trend in British rock guitar bands to look across the pond for inspiration, it is nice to see something going the other way. This Canadian quartet have taken a large helping of New Wavers such as Cars and XTC, a pinch of Elvis Costello and mixed it all up with a heap of great production and a good sense of humour to create a joyous album of new wave funk.
For anyone else who bought Radio 4's Gotham! late last year, and fell in love with it, this is almost a natural progression. The singer's vocals do owe a lot to the late great Joe Strummer, formerly of the Clash, but his delivery puts them further forward into the early 80's and New Wave.
All of these 10 songs are great examples of how to do pure pop anthems, and overall this album is my current early summer soundtrack. It has some infectious beats, and on songs like Oh Goddamit, funky bass lines to die for. Maybe I exaggerate a little there, but since my chosen instrument is bass I pay a lot of attention to this sort of thing!
This album is great fun and should be served with a chilled beer and a lazy summer evening.

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars
