Okay, maybe Bruce is not the perfect vocalist for some of these tunes, but his passion and sincerity overcome any deficiencies. One thing I like about this album is the song selection. Yeah, there are a few "hits" and tunes that have been covered before, but overall, it's a savvy selection. And whoa ... how about his version of "Do I Love You" ? Shout it out! This is an album to savor and play again and again.
For the love of music!
I hope Bruce decides to make a Volume 2. It's a shame that Volume 1 didn't log in more than a few weeks on the Billboard 200. It is well-deserving and a must have, even if you're not a big Bruce fan, like me. This album will change your tune!
This album is mostly covers of Butler, Gamble and Huff ravers and Frank Wilson gems, delivered with heart and verve. Springsteen's sandpapered growl is perfectly suited to the task of putting over these soul classics the way they were meant to be played.
This isn't new territory for The Boss. I suspect a lot of these dance tunes were used as closers or encores, when Springsteen's band was playing beach bars on the East Coast in the 1960s and 70s. Now he's dusted them off, given each one a thoughtful new arrangement, and delivered them like a loving gift to a brand new audience.
