About

The London Suede on Tour

Legendary English band The London Suede (known simply as The Suede in the UK) are an alternative-rock, glam rock, pop-rock, shoe-gazing, dance-pop group from London. Originally formed in 1989, The London Suede drew on musical influences such as Roxy Music, The Smiths, David Bowie, and The Cure. Following the release of their ninth album, and first record in four years, 2022's Autofiction, The London Suede commenced their 2022 North American tour. With the band's lineup currently featuring original members Brett Anderson (vocals) and Mat Osman (bass), along with Simon Gilbert (drums), Richard Oakes (guitar/backing vocals), and Neil Codling (keyboards, synthesizer, guitar, piano, backing vocals), The London Suede's live performances are filled with the same gritty, darkly melodic and majestic beats for which the band has been known for more than three decades.

The London Suede first emerged onto the music scene with their debut single "The Drowners" in 1992, which earned an NME Award for Best Single. That same year the band released their second single, "Metal Mickey," followed by their debut album, Suede, in 1993. Following their debut album, The London Suede released Dog Man Star (1994), Coming Up (1996), Head Music (1999), A New Morning (2002), Bloodsports (2013), Night Thoughts (2016), The Blue Hour (2018), and Autofiction (2022).

The London Suede Live in Concert

Shifting through a number of band members in the early '90s, The London Suede's only constant members from the formation of their group are vocalist Anderson and bassist Osman. The band's first single, "The Drowners" reached No. 49 on the U.K. charts in 1992 and was quickly followed by their breakthrough song, "Metal Mickey," which reached No. 17 on the charts. The London Suede's debut album, Suede, debuted at the top of the UK Albums chart and became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK since Frankie Goes to Hollywood's debut album, Welcome to Pleasuredome, was released in 1984. Hot off their newfound fame, The London Suede continued to rock their way through the '90s, winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize for Best Album for Suede in 1993. After a successful run in the '90s, at the end of 2003 the band announced that they would not continue to make music.

The London Suede reemerged in 2013 with their album, Bloodsports, which made several best-of lists in 2013. They continued making music, coming out with the 2016 album, Night Thoughts, which reached No. 6 on the U.K. charts, and 2018's The Blue Hour, which was placed on multiple best-of albums lists.

by AidoJC on 11/28/22Orpheum Theatre presented by Citizens - Boston

Not a fan of Suede, just stayed for the Manics and they did not disappoint! Excellent 15 or so song set, sounded fantastic! If it was the last time we'll see them in the US it was a worthy send off!

A hole new meaning to VIP

by MikeO on 11/23/22Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

I bought 3 tickets to take 2 of my kids to see the Manic Street Preachers (and Suede). I have only been to the Palladium twice before. The first time, I was standing downstairs and the view was not great, so the second time (Muse, about 4 years ago), I bought tickets for upstairs. When we got there, we found that it was not all standing upstairs, there were actually rows of seats that we were told were for VIP's and we had to stand behind them. Again, not great. So this time, I thought I was prepared. The tickets for this gig were either downstairs or VIP upstairs - I splashed out on 3 tickets for the VIP upstairs. My (grown up) kids were excited to go. Imagine how we felt when we got upstairs and were told that our VIP tickets were not valid for the seating, they were just standing (what sort of VIP is just standing), we were told that we had to pay another $80 each to sit (I could see many others complaining too). This was definitely not VIP treatment. After a lot of deliberation, we paid for 3 seats at the front of the balcony, overlooking the stage. When we sat down, we found that we could not actually see the stage, the seats were too far back from the edge of the balcony - so we ended up having paid extra to still be standing. The one consolation was that we had nobody in front of us and a great view of the band. The Manics came on and the first number was great, then a very bright light was switched on (far side of stage) that shone directly into our eyes - we were all blinded. The light was used for almost the entire Manics set. We hardly saw any of it and ended up sitting for most of their set with our eyes either closed or turned away from the stage. It turned out to be a very expensive night out, just to listen to a band.

The Return of the London Suede to the US

by Jon A on 11/23/22The Met Philadelphia - Philadelphia

The venue is great and the london suede played well, however their set was too short at an hour and 3 minutes long.
