Espresso coffee maker Pulcina
Pulcina comes from a research entirely dedicated to the design and functionality of the espresso coffee maker. As a result of this study and the application of the technology developed by illycaffè, Pulcina is a high performance coffee maker with a boiler that stops dispensing the drink at the right time before the coffee gets a bitter aftertaste. This helps to enhance the full and rich aroma of this drink. The spout has been designed with the same attention to functional aspects: when pouring coffee, its special V shape, which recalls a chick's beak (hence the name of the coffee maker) allows it to perfectly stop the drop. The handle and plastic knob in colours black and red complete the coffee maker.
The Designer
Architect. Michele De Lucchi was a prominent figure in movements like Cavart, Alchimia and Memphis. He designed lamps and furniture for the most well known Italian and European companies and realized architectural project in Italy and abroad. His work has been exhibited in Europe, the United States and Japan. He was appointed Officer of the Italian Republic for services to design and architecture and has been nominated Professor at the Design Faculty of the Politecnico of Milan and Member of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome. He has recently realized a number of proejcts for the city of Milan: the pavilions for Expo 2015 (Padiglione Zero, Expo Center, Intesa Sanpaolo), UniCredit Pavilion in piazza Gae Aulenti and the installation for the Pietà Rondanini at the Ospedale Spagnolo at the Castello Sforzesco. For the Salone del Mobile 2015 De Lucchi has created "La Passeggiata" for Workplace3.0, dedicated to his vision of workspace.
The company
Founded in 1921 as a “Workshop for the processing of brass and nickel silver sheet metal, with foundry”, Alessi has always stood out for the high quality of its products.
In almost a century of history, the company has gradually evolved to become one of the leading “Factories of Italian design”, capable of applying its expertise and excellence in design management to many different product types.
Open to change and international development, Alessi at the same time has a strong bond with the traditions and cultural background of its area and continues to be synonymous with handcrafted objects produced with the help of machines.
Alessigraphy: the geography of Alessi production
Since the Company's foundation in 1921 the majority of Alessi products have been manufactured through the cold working of metals, a tradition that is kept alive today by the skilled workers at the Crusinallo plant in Omegna.
Over time, Alessi also began to work with many other materials, such as porcelain, glass, wood, and plastic... A specific production method was developed for each one. Even when production takes place outside the Crusinallo plant, Alessi’s guidelines guarantee the company’s original production quality standards, continuing to reconcile industrial technological complexity with an artisanal eye for detail.
The objects produced from the different materials are manufactured in various production plants across the world. They remain original Alessi objects in that they are conceived with the same design excellence and produced with the same attention to quality that sets the company’s products apart.

Product Description
The stove top espresso coffee maker "Pulcina", designed by Michele de Lucchi is the product of intense research into the optimization of the shape of the coffee pot in order to improve and enhance the organoleptic properties of coffee. Thanks to the internal shape of its special heater, "Pulcina" automatically stops filtering the coffee at the right moment. This interruption helps to eliminate the eruption phase, the final filtering stage that generates a burnt and bitter aftertaste, ensuring that only the finest qualities of the coffee are preserved and enhancing its full-bodied and rounded aroma. The spout is quite pronounced. Its typical 'V' shape, reminiscent of a baby chick's beak, is specially designed to perfectly cut drops when pouring. Practical and functional, making coffee with the "Pulcina" is just like making it with a traditional coffee pot.

Second, the build quality is impressive. I have had several Moka pots of various sizes over the years and they felt, for lack of a better word, cheap. The aluminum felt flimsy and the pieces fit together in a haphazard sort of way. The Alessi, by contrast, seems to be engineered and manufactured to much tighter specifications. The aluminum feels heavier and the parts fit together snugly. The lid on the upper part opens and closes smoothly without being loose or rattling around.
Third, but partly an extension of the point above, the Alessi is beautiful. Both the aesthetic and functional design elements are outstanding. It looks great on the shelf, its crisp, smooth lines (presumably from CNC machining) when viewed up-close become sweeping curves when viewed from a few feet away.
The only real downside to the design is the handle. It is a bit small and awkwardly shaped, making it difficult to pour without your fingers bumping the hot metal. I usually grab it with a towel or oven mitt if I am pouring right off the stove.
Also, in case anyone is not acquainted with Moka-style coffee makers, this device does not make espresso. Coffee from the Alessi is never going to taste like a shot of espresso from your favorite coffee shop. That said, it does produce a stronger brew with more body than a drip-style coffee maker, and it is appropriate for a demitasse serving. It is called a 3-cup maker, but I get just a bit over two espresso cups' worth of coffee per brew.
Overall, if you are like me and had given up on Moka-style coffee, you might consider giving this one a try. It is a big improvement over the Moka, and will look great on the shelf even when you aren't using it.
So I spent more than I liked and have received a FAR superior toy that the Bialetti.
It's solid as a tank and doesn't leak, spit nor shoot coffee anywhere. It's just fantastic!
And there is a NOTICEABLE difference in the quality of coffee brewed. It smells and taste distinctly different - and I am NOT a coffee snob, either.
Anyway, the difference in costs between the this and the lower costs brands are large. However, the quality of the product and coffee are significantly better.
Similarly, the look of the unit is dead sexy and the packaging is super cool too. Just remember to run a load of coffee through it before your first drinkable cup. Also, DON'T USE SOAP ON IT. Just get it wet and wipe it out.

This things looks great and works great, and unlike the bialetti it actually uses up all the water in the bottom.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this pot! Quick easy and DELICIOUS! Not to mention BEAUTIFUL!!
UPDATE!! I have had this pot for less than 5 MONTHS and it is falling APART!!
I am 65 y/o who takes very good care of this pot.
There’s no one else that uses it.I HAND WASH IT OCCASIONALLY WITH LITTLE TO NO MILD SOAP.
The hinge that holds the top lid is to cheap to handle the weight of the lid. So it easily bends and gets crooked. I can hear things rattle around in the fallen off handle but there’s no way to get the screws out to try and repair it yourself!!
And worst of all shortly after I received mine I ordered a second one as a birthday gift for a friend!! I feel embarrassed.
It’s high on beauty and form
BUT IT GET’s AN “F” FOR EVERY THING ELSE!!
What you get this pot is WAAAAY over priced. Had it been sturdy and functional I would have gladly paid the price.
I plan to avoid this company from now on.
