“Gorgeous. . . . This is food that makes you feel invincible.” —New York Times Book Review
Eating whole foods can transform a diet, and mastering the art of cooking these foods can be easy with the proper techniques and strategies. In 20 chapters, Chaplin shares ingenious recipes incorporating the foods that are key to a healthy diet: seeds and nuts, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and other plant-based foods. Chaplin offers her secrets for eating healthy every day: mastering some key recipes and reliable techniques and then varying the ingredients based on the occasion, the season, and what you’re craving. Once the reader learns one of Chaplin’s base recipes, whether for gluten-free muffins, millet porridge, or baked marinated tempeh, the ways to adapt and customize it are endless: change the fruit depending on the season, include nuts or seeds for extra protein, or even change the dressing or flavoring to keep a diet varied. Chaplin encourages readers to seek out local and organic ingredients, stock their pantries with nutrient-rich whole food ingredients, prep ahead of time, and, most important, cook at home.

“There’s no shortage of vegetarian cookbooks out there, but it’s rare that I find one that inspires me page after page as much as Amy Chaplin’s Whole Food Cooking Every Day. . . . And since most of the recipes in the book are designed to keep for five days or longer, you can mix and match a few recipes to make a week’s worth of healthy meals, even on a busy schedule.”

“Some cookbook authors have earned my complete trust, and Amy Chaplin is one of them. I’ve never made a thing I didn’t love from her stunning first book. . . . [Her] latest, Whole Food Cooking Every Day, starts with the same philosophy as her first — that cooking with ingredients as close to their natural state as possible can be inspiring and nourishing. But this time, she sets out to make the prospect even more accessible, using base recipes for pastas, soups, nut butters, sauces, beans, muffins and more, and then expanding each with multiple variations.”
—Washington Post
“For anyone looking to add more plants to their plate, this cookbook by James Beard award-winner Amy Chaplin is a must.”
—Epicurious
“This cookbook highlights [whole foods] in master recipes that can then be transformed into multiple satisfying meals throughout the week so it’s actually easy to stick to your best intentions (without sacrificing any flavor).”

—Mind Body Green
“Gorgeous. . . . Every time I flip through it for ideas, I feel like I spent a day at the spa.”
—Cup of Jo
“Nicely illustrated with close-up color photographs, this book encourages cooks to try new ingredients and techniques to make healthier food.”

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2025I am so excited about this book as one of my daughters has celiac disease, my other daughter is vegetarian and I am lactose intolerant. Cooking well for my family has its challenges for sure! I love that the book gives you a base recipe and then variations - such a phenomenal way to make life a bit easier and keep our meals interesting! Every recipe is nutritious and delicious, and not at all overwhelming or overly complicated! 5 stars, truly wonderful!
I do want to note that the resources listed in the back of the book may not all be gluten free. The author has listed frontiercoop as a place to purchase spices and herbs for example. I spoke with someone at the company and they process products containing gluten and therefore cannot claim GF on any of the products she lists to purchase from them. (They do have very few products that they test and label GF he said, but there is no way to filter or sort on their site to find them.) The “Gluten Free Diet” has made living with Celiac Disease a landmine to navigate through as this “diet” doesn’t need to be truly free from gluten as one with Celiac Disease does. The title of the book says nothing about celiac, so this is just my personal irk. I’ll be going through all of these resources and thourally checking if they are truly free from gluten before making purchases to stock our pantry. I thought this would eliminate the time of doing this as she listed it in her gluten free cookbook and was a perk I thought when purchasing the book. (Would have purchased without the resource list though, it’s phenomenal overall!). If you’re someone with Celiac you probably already would double check ingredients with these companies, but please keep this in mind before blanket purchasing from the resource list in the back of the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2020I've had this book for about two months now and have given many of the recipes a try and had a chance to read through the resource sections. It's an incredible resource - and just the kind of cookbook I like, with several basic recipes and TONS of ways to change them up.
Each recipe I've tried has come out perfectly. A few of my favorites are the breads, chia puddings, crackers, and vegetable dishes. There are primers for cooking beans and grains; toasting nuts and seeds; soaking; stocking the pantry; creating a weekly menu plan; using sea vegetables. All are comprehensive - I didn't feel like there was any missing information or gaps in the guidance.
Nearly every recipe is vegan or very easy to adapt to be vegan. There are some 'variation' recipes that use ingredients I don't keep stocked (freeze-dried berry powders, for example), but none of the base recipes (all of which - except the muffins - the author says you can make without a variation) use specialty ingredients. The special ingredients are easily available in many natural food stores or Amazon and the author includes a list of resources for all ingredients at the end of the book. Some are pricy, but again, there are a ton of other 'variation' recipes to try if you don't want to buy the specialty ingredients.
The layout is great, too. The book stays open to the page you're reading when laid flat, and most recipes do not require page turning, which is nice when your hands are covered in the ingredients. Photographs are beautiful.
I absolutely love this book (wound up ordering the author's previous book as well, and love it just as much) and highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2019Loving this book so much! It’s totally becoming a go to and I’ve only had it about a week. I love the idea of taking a bit of time, multitasking and meal prepping for a delicious weeks worth of eats!! So far I’ve made a few recipes, here’s my thoughts:
Base recipe: seeded rice bread. It can out just as described and I will make it again for sure. Great sliced and eaten as is or toasted!! Will try everything but the bagel seasoning on top next time I back with sunflower seeds.
Will try the other variations!!
Used the suggestions for soaking and cooking beans and used my instant pot. So far I made a batch of black beans and pintos. Can wait to make some marinated beans and quick bean sauces.
Beet dressing!! Love this tangy, Whole Foods flavor packed dressing. So good on salads but also grains, beans. Sautéed kale & chard. I plan on making the zucchini dressing today.
Fruit compote: I made the fall variation with pears & apples. Amazing it contains no sugar but is so flavor packed. Excellent on steel cut oats in the morning with pomegranate seeds, hemp seeds and cashew butter!
Can’t wait to keep cooking from this book over and over again. Excellent ideas for thinking out of the box in the kitchen, new ways to utilize fruits, veg, grains, nuts, beans, etc. Perfect for gluten free, dairy free, and vegan options!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a cookbook. A guide and blueprint to a healthier way of eating
Her first cookbook is my favourite wholefoods cookbook out of the ones I have.
It's was not just not a compilation of recipe, but more like a teaching book on how to approach the ingredients and food groups.
It got me to stop buying canned beans and start cooking them from scratch, so I knew I had to get her 2nd cookbook.
She did not disappoint! I think I might actually even prefer this book to the 1st.
I LOVE her thoughtful approach to cookbook writing. It's practical and with substance, rather than just pretty colourful pictures.
The day to day approach of the ingredients, tips of how to personalise recipes and change during the seasons, make it a very practicable book to use on a regular basis.
The batch cooking guide and tips are very helpful, and something that's quite difficult to find in most cookbook.
Have already made the marinated beans for my weekly salad meal prep, and have plans to make the match granola soon :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool
Thais book gives some many variations on each dish it's like 5 books worth of recipes. Great for people who want to eat healthy and get bored eat the same thing constantly. Lots of gluten free recipes. A lot of recipes call for nuts so would not be the best choice for someone who can't eat them.
