We bought the kids fire tablets, not really knowing what we had done. When you first turn on the tablet it goes to the parent account, you have to have an amazon account, and log in. Then you add a child’s name and make them a child’s profile. We didn’t realize it came with a year subscription to amazon kids freetime. I had no idea what it was, but when you set up the tablet, it automatically starts your one year subscription. The subscription includes COUNTLESS books, videos, and apps. I will say MANY of these books were not age appropriate for my young children. There is an “age filter” but it only kind of works. I put the age limiter down to age 2-3 and there were still many books and videos about ghosts, zombies, wars, and just some really weird stuff. Thankfully, there is a “block content” section that you can look up certain words and block those kinds of things. And when the time comes, you can also unblock that content. It took my about 3 hours (which is the only reason I gave it 4/5 stars) to set the tablets up and remove all of the unwanted content. So each app needs to be downloaded on WiFi, but can be played off WiFi once downloaded. Same with books, and videos. You can remove downloads easily, and add apps to your “favorites” for easy access. You also can search at the top for the kinds of apps, books, and videos you want or prefer. Like I searched for “disney” and about a hundred books pop up, 20+ apps, and related content. At the top there are many categories to help you find what you are looking for, like “movies” or “educational” etc. You can also disable the camera so that you childs apps cannot take video of them. All apps not on the kids freetime subscription must be downloaded through the parents account first. So apps like Hulu, and disney plus we’re kind of annoying to download, but easy enough (There are many YouTube videos that can show you how to download new apps) Otherwise, the apps are great for learning alphabet, spelling, math, and reading. The cases are very durable. The stands on the cases work really well. The touch screen is really responsive. The side buttons work well. They are fairly loud if you want them to be. The settings and profiles are all locked by a four digit number while on child’s account. Get the fire tablet with the most amount of storage. We did, and we still want more so bought extra storage (micro sd cards)
For anyone who has a fairly young child and they are concerned about getting that child a tablet this is a good purchase. This review is going to summarize the many tablets my grandson has had since he was three. I want to point out here all the tablets we've had replaced were all broken by my grandson except for one. Out of I think it's been eight tablets none of them failed.
Amazon has an environment which is easy to control There's a lot of entertainment designed specifically for children but it's also a legitimate tablet so they're learning skills which I feel certain they will use for the rest of their life.
The quality of the tablet is really good for the price ... Especially since you are going to be guaranteed the tablet will provide entertainment for the child for at least 2 years.
I purchased my grandson a 7-in when he was 3. During the two years following that purchase it was replaced twice absolutely free and very expeditiously.
After its two year anniversary I upgraded him to an 8-in when he was 5 I believe. It was a lot better tablet, a bigger tablet etc. He dropped it off of balcony and broke it once and became frustrated once and hit it against the bumper of a vehicle. Both times a replacement was sent very quickly for free.
Well after it's 2-year anniversary I was made aware yet another tablet had reached its untimely end. Actually I guess it wasn't untimely considering I know a lot of adults who can't keep a tablet a year. This was well over 2 years approaching 3 years with this tablet, which had been replaced twice.
As you can tell we have a lot of experience with the fire tablets. I should add right now I have three, two seven inch and one 10 in. The fire OS is a little different than the regular Android OS & for adults Can be a concern. It's not my favorite operating system but this tablet is for a child Of all the fire tablets this is the one that I can say without a shadow of a doubt is a good purchase you will not regret.
I will add getting the replacements is a little bit more difficult than the first one I don't think it's Amazon policy that's changed I think the customer service guys are used to dealing with the regular tablets and you simply need to remind them and read it verbatim for 2 years you get a replacement no questions asked. No questions asked to me means stop asking me questions except for the important one ... do I send it to the address on file?? It's never taken me more than 20 minutes on the phone to have the replacement shipped. And it's never cost me a dime. If you haven't placed your order by now I'm not really sure what else I can tell you to convince you It's a good purchase for your child or grandchild and they will thank you. Now, you have plenty of money just go buy it already.
The Fire HD 8 Kids tablet has seamlessly integrated into our family, becoming a cherished companion for my 2-year-old. Its user-friendly interface has transformed screen time into an engaging and educational experience. The simplicity of navigation makes it easy for my little one to explore the colorful world of games and cartoons independently.
What sets the Fire HD 8 Kids tablet apart is its carefully curated content for young minds. My toddler's eyes light up with joy as she immerses herself in interactive games that foster learning and creativity. The tablet's ability to strike a balance between entertainment and education aligns perfectly with my parenting values.
Among her favorites is the captivating world of Dora the Explorer, where each episode unfolds like a new adventure. The vibrant visuals and interactive elements keep her entertained while subtly imparting valuable lessons. As a parent, witnessing her enthusiasm for learning through play is truly heartwarming.
Moreover, the tablet's durability is a relief for this parent of an energetic toddler. Designed with the chaotic nature of childhood in mind, it withstands the occasional bumps and spills that come with little hands exploring the digital realm.
In essence, the Fire HD 8 Kids tablet has not just become a gadget; it's a source of joy and learning for my 2-year-old. Its ease of use, coupled with age-appropriate content, has seamlessly integrated technology into our daily routine, creating moments of both fun and education for my little one.
We have two previous generations of Fire HD 8 Kids tablets (2017, 2019), my experience has been they tended to get bogged down performance wise with increasing stability issues after roughly a year, so I was initially hesitant getting the newer model (2020, yeah I know it's already 2022). By now, the 2017 was near unusable, and the 2019 was also painfully slow and often requiring restarts to work properly. When this model went on sale again I decided to give it another try and I'm glad I did.
The good: a) The tablet feels much faster compared to the 2019 out of the box. b) I must applaud Amazon for the ease of setting it up - having it already registered to my account likely made a difference. c) Kids are rough on their devices, and the kids edition case really helps protect the tablet and the oversized dimensions and the texture treatment are great for little hands; as a bonus, the 2020 model now comes with a built-in stand, it's not really adjustable but it can be used in two different orientations adding to its flexibility.
The not so good: a) Its built-in storage is only at 32GB and fills up fast so the micro-SD expansion is great - but it seems they never addressed the one annoying issue I'm seeing with all three generations: after rebooting the tablet many of the downloaded apps / videos require a re-download before they can be used again, I suspect this is for the apps that are installed to the micro-SD card. It seems if I wait long enough they eventually show as downloaded again, but you're SOL if you're offline and cannot wait :(.
Final thoughts: This being a 2020 model Amazon may already be preparing an update but all things considered it's still a relatively performant tablet for the kiddos and a good value (great value when it's on sale).
Nice tablet for any kiddo. I bought this for my nephew and he loves it. The case is very durable as he already has dropped it and no damage. It’s got a great picture and the perfect gift.
