The Half Moon: A Novel Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 2,090 ratings

“An insightful, riveting study of marriage.” —People

From the bestselling author of Ask Again, Yes, a masterful and “absorbing” (The New York Times) novel about a couple in a small town navigating the complexities of marriage, family, and longing.

Malcolm Gephardt, handsome and gregarious longtime bartender at the Half Moon, has always dreamed of owning a bar. When his boss finally retires, Malcolm stretches to buy the place. He sees unquantifiable magic and potential in the Half Moon and hopes to transform it into a bigger success, but struggles to stay afloat.

His smart and confident wife, Jess, has devoted herself to her law career. After years of trying for a baby, she is facing the idea that motherhood may not be in the cards for her. Like Malcolm, she feels her youth beginning to slip away and wonders how to reshape her future.

“A quick and impactful read that will stay with you long after you finish it” (
theSkimm), The Half Moon takes place over the course of one week when Malcolm learns shocking news about Jess, a patron of the bar goes missing, and a blizzard hits the town of Gillam, trapping everyone in place. With a deft eye and generous spirit, Mary Beth Keane explores the disappointments and unexpected consolations of midlife, the many forms forgiveness can take, the complicated intimacy of small-town living, and what it means to be a family.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of May 2023: Mary Beth Keane (Ask Again, Yes) delivers another deeply satisfying novel that unfolds simply at first but crescendos with dazzling nuance. Taking place over the course of a week—during a blizzard—and moving backward and forward in time, Keane tells the story of Malcolm and Jess Gephardt’s romance—falling in love, marriage, the buzz of hope for babies and businesses, the crush of betrayal, and how fragile allegiances and relationships can be. Keane is a master at unravelling the plot so you can’t stop turning the pages, gasping at “the slow-motion fail of a dream” that tears them apart—and yet, still hang on to the hope that Malcolm and Jess find each other once more. I loved reading this book because in examining a marriage, Keane pushes her characters to define their desire and ambition, and don’t we all need to do that in our own lives? —Al Woodworth, Amazon Editor

Review

“Absorbing . . . it’s such a pleasure to sink into Keane’s quietly luminous prose . . . She manages to find the extraordinary grace in our achingly ordinary world.” —Janice Y.K. Lee, The New York Times Book Review

"Poignant . . . class differences underlie personal strife as the couple struggles with adultery, fertility and civility." —
Bethanne Patrick, The Los Angeles Times

"Deft, satisfying. . . . Keane writes in a realist vein–the vivid, domesticated world of Anne Tyler, of William Trevor, of Elizabeth Strout—but her insights into matters of the heart, longing and restlessness especially, have astonishing delicacy." —
Vogue, Most Anticipated Books of 2023

"An insightful, riveting study of marriage." —
People

"One of our finest writers on the interior complexities of marriage and family shines a flashlight on the intricate clockwork of love and longing that runs inside us. Because of the thoughtfulness of that examination, beauty and possibility are visible. I ran my finger over sentences while reading, thinking: 'Yes, exactly.' This kind of fiction allows us to look around our own lives with respect and kindness and is therefore a great gift." —
Ann Napolitano, author of Dear Edward and Hello Beautiful

“Keane's prose is luminous and controlled, brimming with insights into her nuanced characters . . . a gripping read with an unexpected and satisfying resolution.” —
The Minneapolis Star Tribune

"A tale of midlife musings on second chances." —
TIME

"Once again, Keane mines the family strife and secrecy that made her absorbing
Ask Again, Yes one of the bigger book-club breakouts of the last several years. Here, a full marriage story is compressed within the span of a single week as charming, gregarious bartender Malcolm and his conscientious lawyer wife Jess confront the longtime fissures in their union and the many dreams deferred." —Entertainment Weekly

“I adored this compelling, touching, exquisitely crafted story about a marriage in crisis.”
—Liane Moriarty, New York Times bestselling author of Big Little Lies

"A quick and impactful read that will stay with you long after you finish it." —
The Skimm

“Keane explores the sacrifices of a marriage, setting Malcolm's impulsive deal to buy the bar he loved against Jess's consuming dream of parenthood. . . . The tension is undeniable and deeply compelling . . . with an unexpected twist, Keane's charming, tautly-paced, and introspective novel will delight.” —
Booklist (starred review)

“Mary Beth Keane writes to the heart of the human heart. She shows us how love can deepen, how love can stall—hang in the sky like a half moon, waxing and waning in the same moment, equal parts shadow and light. I could not put this book down.” —
Miranda Cowley-Heller, author of The Paper Palace

The Half Moon is one of those rare novels that feels simultaneously classic and contemporary. Mary Beth Keane writes with exquisite detail about a marriage and a hometown, and accomplishes something remarkable: she makes you care about every character and see their point of view. The Half Moon is about the choices we make in who we love and how we love and when we need to come to terms with the past. I could not stop reading.” —Vendela Vida, author of We Run the Tides

"A quietly marvelous story of dreams, disappointments and second chances, but, mostly, love."
Charmaine Wilkerson, author of Black Cake

"Did you love
Ask Again, Yes? Then you'll eat up this one, which is set in the same fictional town but tells an even more intimate family story, offering a close-up look at a long marriage tested by time and unrequited dreams." —Mary Laura Philpott, author of I Miss You When I Blink

"I fell in love with
The Half Moon from the first page, and barely looked up until I'd finished. Mary Beth Keane has written another brilliantly absorbing novel about complicated marriages and family dynamics—how they shape us, yes, but how they undo us as well. Prepare to lose yourself in this book." —Sara Collins, author of The Confessions of Frannie Langton

"The Half Moon is a masterful novel that tells with great tenderness how love goes wrong and how, with hope, it can be righted. Mary Beth Keane is an unnervingly talented novelist—dead-on brilliant, authentic, full of humor, and possessing a dark and comforting wisdom. The Half Moon is a triumph." —Adrienne Brodeur, author of Wild Game

f you read this author’s novel ASK AGAIN, YES, you might remember the fictional town of Gillam, NY, and if so, you’ll be delighted that it is the setting for her newest work where we meet two contemplative characters who wove their way into my heart for their authenticity, how they faced adversity, and pursuit of their dreams. What I didn’t imagine and what made reading this book that much more enjoyable was the departure the characters took.

Malcolm, who has been working at the Half Moon, a neighborhood bar, for all of his adult life, hopes to own it someday. It’s more than a pub, it’s the community gathering spot, where everyone truly knows your name. Jess, his wife, who also grew up in Gillam, a recent law school graduate, now an attorney in the city, met Malcolm at the bar one night while back home and she was smitten with the handsome bartender. Young and in love, they are hopeful to expand their family. It doesn’t occur to them that, down the road, they might have different dreams or that when plans for the future don’t materialize and it’s time to regroup, not everyone is always in alignment. Their relationship will be put to the test.

A major unexpected snowstorm descends upon the town, leaving people without power, stranded at home. The stagnant time is a perfect metaphor for Jess and Malcolm’s relationship – frozen in place. Yearning for family, success, however it’s defined, we eagerly anticipate the thaw and what will be uncovered.

Keane introduces additional conflict later in the book, which I was not expecting, but it sure added some extra oomph to this quietly told tale.

THE HALF MOON is a peek behind the curtain into a marriage in disrepair, chasing dreams, and hope.

Mary Beth Keane is masterful at creating nuanced characters. The main characters in The Half Moon, Malcolm Gebhardt and Jess Ryan Gebhardt, are so well developed in the novel that I believed they were real people and wondered about them when I wasn’t reading and even after I finished the story. Malcolm dreams of owning the Half Moon, a bar he has worked at for over twenty years. His wife is an attorney and dreams of becoming a mother. They both come from a small town named Gillam, a NYC suburb and setting for the bar and most of the story. Of course, their families and old friends live close, stay connected, and folks know everybody’s business.

Malcolm and Jess have been unable to conceive a baby after years of working with fertility experts and unsuccessful in vitro fertilization. After deciding not to try any longer and Malcolm’s purchase of the bar without consulting Jess, the couple separates. Then, there is suspicious activity at the bar, a horrible snowstorm, and life becomes complicated. The detailed descriptions of Malcolm and Jess's actions and decisions as they deal with their angst are so true-to-life, and the feelings conveyed are palpable.

Keane forces one to consider marital expectations and secrets between spouses. The implications of honesty and lying in marriage and life play out fascinatingly. The plot explores old and new friendships and conflicted friends when a couple splits. Additionally, the value of family is a significant theme; defining a nuclear family and appreciating extended family are considerations for the characters. Taking into account the educational status of the main characters and their circles of acquaintances leads to subtle and noticeable class differences. Malcolm and Jess's choices and focus on lifetime dreams lead to heartbreaking events, and financial issues do not help.

This novel was difficult for me to get into. It was a mishmash of things happening in the first few chapters. I didn’t like any of the characters. It ended up being a good story, but I was glad to see it end.

Ask Again, Yes was a five star read for me and I could not stop raving about it to my reading friends. Because of it, I was thrilled to get an advanced copy of Mary Beth Keane's next novel, The Half Moon. I had a backlog of books to read so by the time I read it, there were tons of reviews already posted for The Half Moon, and I was so sad to see how low the average rating was. I was determined not to let those color my opinion, though.

I am happy to say that I had a very different experience with the book than the negative reviewers did. I appreciated the realistic struggles Malcolm and Jess dealt with. Marriage is often a series of conflicts that might seem boring or unimportant to outside observers but catastrophic to those inside the marriage. That is how I felt about Jess and Malcolm. Both characters did things that seem unforgiveable to people looking at their marriage from the outside. Malcolm not consulting Jess, a lawyer no less, about a purchase that would affect both their livelihood and credit scores was appalling. Jess looking for validation through other men, as bad or worse than what Malcolm did. Both parties so focused on how their marriage and their partner's were negatively affecting themselves, that they couldn't be bothered to try to improve their marriage by working on their own shortcomings.

I was not a fan of how the non-linear timeline was presented. It got confusing at times. Other than that, I found the story very believable, and just like Ask Again, Yes, The Half Moon felt very hopeful to me. I look forward to more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful character driven novel!

My goodness, how I love Keane’s writing! I was lucky to be sent a proof of this, but within a chapter I knew I’d love it enough to want the hardback so obviously I ordered it 👏

This story begins as a real study of character and marriage, but then also throws in a bit of mystery and intrigue as we progress. Whilst I found the plot interesting, I’d definitely recommend coming to this with the expectation of a character driven novel, because that’s what Keane does so well - she’s so insightful as to people’s motivations and the nuances of relationships, whether those are marriages, friendships or even business relationships. I loved both Malcolm and Jess as characters, and found it easy enough to understand both of their perspectives, which Keane writes in a fair and balanced way, with plenty of empathy. This does tackle the tough topic of difficulty conceiving, so do be warned if this might be emotional for you - it’s quite a moving read at times.

I loved lots about this, from the small community vibes and atmosphere of the bar, to the situations the characters find themselves in which will leave readers wondering what they’d do in that position. It’s a beautifully written, insightful novel, and whilst it wasn’t quite as perfect as The Walking People was for me, I’d still highly recommend it (we’re literally talking 4 instead of 5 stars here 🤣)!

I loved Ask Again, Yes so I moved right on to The Half Moon. It’s similar in tone, which is what I love most about MBK’s writing, but I didn’t enjoy it quite as much. Still a very good read, however, and impeccably researched. Didn’t care much for the crime part, and found some parts about the cops unbelievable.

The struggles of tte main characters weee all too real and that’s what I loved about it. Satisfying ending. This author is great. I’ll probably read another of hers next.
