Sand and oil these before first use

Sand and oil these before first use
As many reviewers pointed out these will crack. I was oiling mine regularly and it still started to crack. Luckily I caught mine early and I was able to sand it with 80 grit to get it out before it spread. I then proceeded up to 240 grit to get it much smoother than what it was like when I bought it. I then liberally spread a lot of food grade mineral oil on it and let it soak in overnight and it’s my favorite spoon ever. I think if it were smoother new and I oiled it liberally before my first use the crack would have never started. It’s the front spoon in the picture and I’m oiling it along with my cutting board and another spoon. I got it super smooth and it feels amazing. It is very thick and easy to hold, so I understand why it is an OXO product. They just really dropped the ball with wood finishing. That being said it took me 20 minutes to restore it and make it better than when I bought it. For the price and the brand this shouldn’t have been something I had to do.

Very well made wood soup/stew/whatever spoon. I have switched out my cooking utensils to Wood and/or silicone and love the quality of this spoon. Smooth, and able to scoop a good amount compared to some other wood spoons I’ve had. It’s got a nice heft to it and will be a work horse in the kitchen for sure.

After going gluten free, I learned that I needed to replace my wooden cooking utensils. Enter this odd looking spoon/spatula thing. Compared to my 10 year old bamboo knes, it's thick and has qeight to it. Not a flimsy piece of twig. The handle is round, not flat.

The reviews that said to oil it were spot on. I have food grade cutting board oil for my hardwood cutting boards, so i used that after the first wash and it soaked up quite a bit. Oiled it a 2nd time before it's first use. I've grown very fond of its oddness and like that it replaced 2 of my most used utensils. Would definitely buy again and will look into the other styles available should I decide I need more.

Olive & beechwood are the best woods for kitchen utensils & this spoon is no exception. I own other OXO wooden spoons & have had NO problems with splitting or cracking. However, it took about a week of slathering them several times a day with mineral oil for them to eventually reach their saturation point but this has kept them 'healthy' for years & I have gotten good service from them.
I love using this spoon or the saute paddle for mixing bread & very thick cookie dough. It's sturdy & just perfect for the task!

The beech construction is high quality with proper use of the wood grain for a carved spoon/bowl and handle.

However, the whole thing, spoon edges and handle are just too thick. The thick spoon edges make it less effective as a corner spoon (vs a general cooking spoon), and the super thick handle makes it feel unwieldy even though I've got large hands. I'm not stirring or spooning wet cement here--a handle half as thick would be fine. The other corner spoon I have, the Helen Chen bamboo one, is pretty much perfect though I've seen recent reviews saying that one's quality has declined, which is why I got this OXO one instead. The OXO is indeed terrific build quality, but the usability is a little lacking in comparison.

This is my second time purchasing oxo wood spoons. Had one I used daily and split after a long time. excited to see this new shape.

I bought this modern wooden spoon to put on top of the pan of boiling water as they say that it can help so it doesn't boil over. Hmmm. Dunno who said that. Didn't work. The spoon itself is substantial and works well for stirring.

As I've discovered cooking over the last 10 years I have also discovered the utensils that are indispensable, such as a sturdy wooden stirring spoon. Wood is stout but doesn't damage any cooking surfaces, impart any unwanted taste or leach unhealthful chemicals. I had been using a flat edged salad spoon for years until the tip got gnarly and ragged. I got stars in my eyes and bought a pricey Epicurean wood spoon with a flat, tapered handle, black piping and a round edge. I hated it from the moment I first used it. The handle was uncomfortable. Within 6 months, the black piping started chipping off. Last but not least, the rounded edge made it next to impossible to scrape browned bits, a feature I soon learned I loved about my old salad spoon. After doing some research I realized that what I wanted was a "scraping spoon". So for six bucks I took the plunge on this OXO. I am very happy. It’s comfortable in the hand, scrapes the bottom of a pan with ease, and the corner piece really does help scraping around the edges of pans. I also like that it has some depth to actually hold a fair amount of food/liquid for tasting and even serving. I’ve used it countless times in the last month and a half which is a good sign. I highly recommend this spoon.

I have one wooden corner spoon and decided to order an extra. This one is thick and heavy duty. It was so much harder to use than my old one I threw it away

It looks really nice and is super sturdy. I haven't had any issues using it with heavy doughs, my only complaint is that when I first purchased it you could visibly see small slivers. I scrubbed and cleaned it first, but there's still the odd piece of wood.
