Tons of issues, including horrible Amazon service

Tons of issues, including horrible Amazon service
I have owned every Kindle starting from 2014 when I got the Voyage. Right off the bat the new Kindle Paperwhite has an overly yellow screen, meaning that the light is significantly yellow. It’s not white, it’s not even subtly opaque. But YELLOW! This is confirmed across multiple websites, including YouTube and Amazon reviews on here. The other issue is that all new Kindles no longer support Apple computers due to the new MTP format that the Kindles are using. This means that you have to go through the hassle of downloading a third-party application to do simple things like update new software and side-load fonts. Which leads me to my next issue, side-loaded fonts are no longer properly supported. You can still side-load fonts BUT every time you open a new book, it automatically defaults to the Bookerly font, even though you have saved a certain font setting. This is extremely annoying! The next issue is that you can no longer download and transfer a book through the content settings on the Amazon website with new Kindles. If you want to download a book that you have purchased, Amazon has eliminated the ability for you to do that. WHY??? Amazon service has no answers regarding this. Needless to say I returned this device for all of the stated reasons and guess what!?! Amazon is going to take 30 DAYS to refund me my money! I have to wait 30 DAYS to get my money back because Amazon has a defective and unsatisfactory faulty device. Next time if I ever purchase another Kindle, it will not be through Amazon. But yet, if new Kindles are this bad, why bother! Now let’s talk about aesthetics and design. It seems Amazon is going backwards in their hardware. The voyage was released 10 years ago in 2014 and if you were to compare them side-by-side, one would think that the Voyage is the brand new model. Aside from the having micro USB, the Voyage has a sleeker, more premium look with page turn sensors and better materials with a micro etched glass screen instead of plastic. It also has a curved symmetrical design for better feel as opposed to a basic slab like the new Paperwhite. Lastly, Amazon has done absolutely NOTHING to improve their software. You still have the same limitations that you did since day one. Kindles have the same limited margin settings, limited font size settings, and limited line-spacing settings. I have a lot of side-loaded fonts that I would like to use but am unable to because they’re either too big or too small with the slightest increment in size adjustment. Absolutely ridiculous! Also, the boldness options are too thick, with slightest adjustment a font will go from too thin to too bold. A total joke! GIVE US MORE FONT SIZES and OPTIONS AMAZON! My Advice: I’m gonna give you my honest and most sincere advice regarding these new kindles. STAY AWAY! They are a disaster. If you have the previous Kindle Paperwhite, stick to that. It is much better! These new Paperwhites are defective. From the yellow screens, to the poor quality control, to the font bugs, to the MTP format it’s just not worth it. The quality control is so bad that buying a new Kindle is like playing the lottery, you most likely will lose and get a defective device with uneven poor lighting… and here’s the rub! Amazon now has the most atrocious return policy in the industry! I don’t say that lightly, it is absolutely despicable what the return process is like. I couldn’t even take the return to a local Kohl’s, UPS store, or a Staples store. I had to take a day off from work because the only option Amazon gave me was to wait for a UPS driver to pick up my Kindle return at my house. Insanity! Talk about extreme inconvenience! Then, and here me out…..It took 29 days from the day I initiated the return until the day it actually reached my bank account to get my refund! 29 Days! And I have been a prime member since 2008! This is how they treat their members! What other business does that? Nobody! If you absolutely must take a chance on these new Kindles, then by all means, go to your local electronic department store and purchase it there. Because when you most likely get a defective Paperwhite, you can at least go back to the store and return it and get your money back immediately. Lastly, A word of Caution! I have a lot of books that I purchased from other websites and for the past 10 years I haven’t had any issues sideloading those books onto my Kindles. BUT, for the past year Amazon is making it very difficult to add side-loaded books onto your Kindle. What I mean is that you can still sideload books via an application like Calibre or Send to Kindle, but you have to keep your Kindle in airplane mode. The moment you take your Kindle off of airplane mode, Amazon will automatically and mischievously delete ALL of your side-loaded books on your Kindle. YES, you heard that right. Amazon WILL delete your side-loaded books that are not purchased through Amazon once you connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi. This happens automatically. To prove this, you can go into your Kindle hard drive on a computer and you will see that the book file no longer exists for that particular book. Other companies do not do this, but Amazon is now doing it and it’s been going on for a year. It’s a known issue all over the internet simply Google it, and Amazon does nothing about it. My guess is that they want you to purchase all of your content on Amazon. They do not want competition. Heed this advice because if you have a lot of of side-loaded books, you’re better off using another eBook Reader such as Kobo or Onyx.

Long time multiple Kindle user. This was a great upgrade and the Raspberry color is beautiful! Screen color was perfect, no weird yellowing, and the warm light feature worked well as always. It is slightly faster than my 2021 PW 5, has slightly improved clarity & crispness, improved battery life, and feels slightly lighter to hold. Purchased during the Black Friday sale so an excellent value. Not a huge upgrade from the PW 5, except for the color, but would be a huge upgrade from any other model. It even feels like a nice upgrade from my Oasis 3, which I love, and even though it doesn’t have page turn buttons, the increased speed, greater screen clarity, greatly greatly improved battery life, and usb c charging, outweigh having page turn buttons for me. I always keep my Kindles in a case so having the on/off button on the bottom of the device isn’t as annoying for me as for some, but I agree it would be much better to have this located on the top or top back (like the Voyage). I do wish Amazon would reconsider the software restrictions they have recently implemented, ie, removal of the Download & Transfer option. Most of us heavily used that feature for non nefarious purposes which did no harm to Amazon or its Authors. We simply used it as risk mitigation to a) keep a backup copy of our data (same as all other data we use) and b) to acquire ebooks while staying in airplane mode, preventing untested firmware updates (quality control issues) from being pushed to our devices and crashing them. Sadly, many people won’t get to enjoy this superior (imo) reading device as they are moving to inferior (imo) non-Amazon ereaders in response to Amazon’s increasing focus on restrictive shenanigans and disturbing lack of quality control surrounding the 2024 Kindle releases.

I received my Kindle PW (Paper White) 2024 yesterday!

My Kindle History Up to Current:
I was using the previous PW which I loved until losing it on a flight - so I dusted off my 2018 PW, popped on a new case and have been using it again for the past 2 years again.
Initially I was holding out for the Colorsoft version. However, when it finally came out the reviews were mediocre to poor. The clincher against my buying the Colorsoft was reading that even in B&W mode, the resolution wasn't as crisp as the standard Kindle PW products. So given the choice between mediocre resolution + mediocre color vs excellent B&W I opted for the 2024 PW.
From reading reviews on it across the spectrum here, I admit I had the return already prepared.
However, my unit arrived in beautiful condition.

    Color:
The chief thing I was looking for was the complaint regarding predominantly yellow screen with the bottom ‘yellower’ band. Not sure if these were faults with the earlier units.
On mine, if I have warmth at 0 and the brightness turned up, the color while not being cool, is about as neutral as possible against physical paper. Dimming to 0 relying on ambient light exaggerates the warmth on the Kindle device especially in my place which uses 2700K warm white light sources.
The uniformity on the page is perfect - I have not been able to create the darker color band on the lower screen that several reviewers have reported.
I haven't yet taken it out into sunlight. I still find the page color at all spectrums is well within my comfort for reading as with paper books where there are also many variations of white color on the pages under different light sources.

    Resolution:
Before ordering I researched the difference between eink and eink carta as my 2018 PW also has 300 ppi. I can't say there is a noticeable difference in the clarity between the 2018 and 2024 unless I look at it under magnifying glass side by side. The difference is nowhere near as detectable as when I upgraded from my 1st gen Kindle to the 2018 PW. In any case both are acceptable and the 2024 resolution is crisp and beautiful as I expected.
EDIT: I finally used this at night in the dark with the brightness set at 8.
During the day, the resolution to my naked eye looked about the same as my 2018 PW.
At night though, the 2024 PW looks far neater and crisper than the older model, even though both are 300 points (the eink Carta difference at work)

    Performance:
This area is where I could really feel the upgrade.
I had no complaints on reading the 2018, but starting, inputting my pin or typing anything in the search area, there was noticeable lag that I was accustomed to since using my first Kindle device.
The 2024 has almost no latency; if it does I have a hard time noticing it. Whether keying in my PIN or typing a search, it is now as instantly responsive as typing on my phone or tablet.
The page turning is as crisp as advertised, and I’m enjoying the animation.

    Size, Weight, Etc .
Form Factor - I'm still in love!
Size - I loved the compact size of the 2018 - almost same as small paperback. While the 2024 is a hair larger, I know I'll acclimate with no problem. It's now about the same as a larger paperback - but much lighter in most cases. I also use it with the Cobak Jade color case - while I love the minimalism of the naked Kindle device, having the stand for me is a must rather than having to hold it. Of course, I remove the case when I want to use it in the hot tub.

    Power Button Location
Jury is still out on this.
I really wish they'd move the power button to the top. On all the Kindles I have owned over the years, I'm annoyed when I hold the unit (even with the case) my finger tends to brush the power button putting the unit to sleep while I'm reading!
On this 2024 PW, I'm noticing that with the increased width and offset position of the button, this may be enough for me to avoid the problem as I typically hold the unit on the bottom dead center, so I'll reserve judgement until I have used the product more.

Overall, while I could have used my 2018 a few more years, the improvements in the 2024 made upgrading completely worthwhile.

I'm reviewing the 2024 Paperwhite as an upgrade to my 2018 edition.

Size - the 2024 edition features a 1" vertical increase over the older model and approximately .5" horizontal increase from the 2018 model. This isn't extremely noticeable to me unless I place them side by side or stack them as I'm doing in the images. If you prefer the smaller size for how compact it is then avoid this one. The increase in screen size does also include slightly less bezel space which is always nice.

Comfort - I'm not about to weigh them on a scale, I'd rather just hold both as it's more realistic to feel. There isn't much of a difference in weight as they're both already very light so I don't suspect you'll get tired of holding them. The lack of a grip of any kind as the surfaces are smooth can make it difficult to hold them up some times. The screen does have a sort of rough almost paper like feel to it that I enjoy.

Functionality - the difference in rendering speed is the most easily seen feature. The old model made it difficult to enjoy using it for me because of how it felt like it was having a seizure with every input. This newer model doesn't completely remove the weird light show of e-ink reprinting but it does it extremely quick in comparison.

Color - there isn't any lol, you get dark mode or normal mode. They're both just different shades of gray 🩶. You also get a "warm" lighting option which can give it more of a tan color which may seem similar to a books pages. But that's all preferences.

Ease of use - in my old Kindle, purchasing a book was a pain and honestly I struggled with this because I couldn't do it from the Kindle. I had to go on Amazon to do it. This newer edition lets me do it with no problem straight from the device. That alone is worth its weight to me.

Quality - I've had both my 2018 and 2024 models without any protective case and have taken them out to the beach and camping. I usually just shove them in my travel box with things like other electronics (steam deck + laptop + cables). None of them have a scratch on them and even my 2018 model still looks and works like new. I'm usually an Amazon hardware hater but these Kindles are made out of great-quality material and the batteries can last for weeks on a single charge.

Conclusion - I'm not a fan of any of Amazon's products, but the changes I've seen on this kindle Paperwhite shows me that at least one of Amazon's departments cares about their products and their QA process. I don't regret this purchase, which is huge when talking about an Amazon product as many of them are littered with old bugs that break common functionality. The Kindle e-reader product while extremely overpriced (largely due to the cost of e-ink) for what it does as an e-reader, it is definitely a well-made product.

    5.0 out of 5 stars
A noticeable upgrade from it's predecessor
