About this item

  • Cold brewed coffee has much less acidity and bitterness which makes it perfect for iced coffee drinks.
  • The Bruer's slow hypnotic process unmasks the natural sweetness, and full-bodied origin flavors of any coffee you brew.
  • Slow drip methodology eliminates the risk of over-extraction, a common issue with full immersion cold brewing.

Love for Coffee Geeks
I was one of the first people to get a Bruer cold brew system through Kickstarter and have had nothing but two years of joy from it! Making a pot for tomorrow morning's enjoyment right now.... About two years later. Still going strong, but I don't make cold brew every day. Maybe once a week. You'll like the Bruer if: - you have an AeroPress and like fiddling with your coffee recipe - you appreciate Kyoto-style cold drip for $6/cup from your specialty coffee house, but hate the cost - you don't need cold brew every day, but 2-3 cups per run are sufficient - you will only hand wash lab-quality glassware and will spend 30-seconds to wash this - you want coffee in which you can taste EVERY note, from chocolate to strawberry to vanilla - you can watch the YouTube how-to video from the makers and follow instructions - you already have a gram scale, burr grinder, and measuring cups (you're a coffee geek) You won't like the Bruer if: - you make and drink coffee by the pitcher with a Mr Coffee (you want a lot of coffee fast with no fuss) - you don't want to make cold brew the night before (this takes overnight to drip) - you want the cheapest cup of coffee possible (55g of grounds to 24oz water for the concentrate is about double my grounds:water ration for hot coffee, so this coffee costs double per glass... Which is why Kyoto costs a lot too) - you must dishwasher everything or have pets or small children with access to your kitchen countertop (this isn't made of bulletproof glass) - you're not willing to be lab-precise in your coffee making (I measure my beans to the gram, my water to the mL, set my Baratza burr grinder, and stopwatch time my drip rate)

I love this Bruer cold-water brewing system!

I’ve used my vintage (1970’s edition) Filtron system to brew coffee extract for years.

The old Filtron system, when completely assembled was not top heavy, and all parts necessary for the complete process (including bowl for extract) could be safely sat on the counter top.

With the newer filtron – that is not possible – because putting the coffee-extract carafe, under the grounds soaking-basket, would make the entire rig top-heavy and most likely collapsible all over the counter top.

Not willing to give up my cold-water coffee extract, and wanting all parts necessary in one spot at the same time to brew the extract, I bought, and last night tried the Breur system.

I love it. The entire system can safely sit on the counter top, with all parts necessary to complete the entire process – WITHOUT it posing as a tippable hazard.

Once you put the grounds in, you place that device in the extract-collection pitcher, then add water in the top. The whole device can sit on the counter, safely, NOT TOP HEAVY – and when it is time to “pull the plug” and let the extract drain – the pitcher is right there, UNDER the grounds basket device, ready to use.

And the resulting brew (coffee or tea from grounds) is delicious -- no ‘acid’ after taste.

I use roughly 2 oz of extract per 20-oz of water, and it creates a strong cup of coffee (or tea).

By the way, this cold-water extraction system makes the MOST delicious tea extract – try filling the coffee basket with tea leaves, and waiting 24 hours before draining! I use Earl Grey (Twinings).

This unit saves you time, when making coffee extract. It saves time, because it is able to safely sit on the counter top, with all parts necessary to the process in one place, at one time.

With the Bruer unit, and its top water device, it is not necessary to stir the grounds to make sure they are wet properly (as in the Toddy system), and there is no ferreting about to get the extract-carafe UNDER the unit (as in the newer Filtron system), when it is time to drain the grounds. The entire unit can safely on the counter top, until time to drain the extract. It is less time consuming that either of the two other units I mentioned above, for this reason.

I like that the Bruer used glass – it does not absorb stains, smells, nor does it discolor.

Lastly, the packaging it comes in, makes it very easy to store the unit, when you are done using it.

If you like using cold-water coffee (or tea) extract, to make your morning cup – this unit is perfect. It is better than the newer Filtron – as it is safe to have the entire assembled unit on the counter top, while brewing takes place.

A very solid performing device. I must note that there a few things to keep in mind when using it. Pre-wetting and cooling the valve mechanism is a must. It will help seal the brew chamber and prep the dripper. Likewise, make sure to lightly soak/pre-wet the coffee ground bed to prevent channeling. Next, make sure that the valve stem is seated well in the valve seal as you are adjusting. Lastly, brew more than once before you write off this device. It's very easy to learn and the product is great. As far as the valve goes, i hear that even the much more expensive Hario and Yama tower brewers need to be watched to insure the drip stays consistent.

As far as taste goes, the Bruer makes a great Coldbrew just like any of the other drip towers. It has been exponentially better than my experience with immersion cold brew systems (Toddy). The clarity of flavor this will provide will knock your socks off. Read the blog and watch videos to learn the ins and outs of the system.

The only reason this isn't a 5 star device, a minor complaint honestly, is the thin glass. You can tell in handling that this is a fragile device. It won't take a beating, HOWEVER, it is definitely not so fragile as to prevent regular usage. On the bright side, they have added a silicon collar to the water pot/coffee bed where it joins the carafe in recent versions of the device. Not only does it look great, but it helps protect both pieces from clanking too much. They've also added a silicon coating to the top of the valve stem which helps gripping it and provides a little cushion for the only other surface in the device you might regularly clank against a glass wall.

I highly recommend this device especially for anyone that may not have the money or counter space for a full tower setup.

My girlfriend and I have been incrementally increasing our in-home coffee game over the past couple of years, and after this purchase, we have seen the top of the mountain.

Everything about this is easy to use and follow along with. Coffee goes here, filter goes here, water goes here... Yadda yadda yadda. This is a very well-made product that works incredibly well for a beautiful cup of cold brew.

The only issue we ever encounter lies with the sensitivity of the drip-control mechanism. You've got to turn it JUST SO to get the right drips per second to give you the best coffee at the end of the process. The problem is that this is typically something we start before bed at night, hoping for the good good in the morning. If the dripping was not properly calibrated (or even if the wand shifted a millimeter during the night), it could have stopped altogether, resulting in no good good. Luckily for you, this is not a design flaw so much as something you get used to in time.

The Cold Bruer is tricky to use and I can get a more consistent result by simply pouring water over coarsely ground coffee, leaving it for 12 hours, and then straining it with cheesecloth. Ultimately, I returned this and bought instead two six-quart Cambro food storage containers, one strainer that fits just right, and some cheese cloth. I make my cold brew in one of the containers, and then pour it over the strainer and cheesecloth into the second one, and finally pout that into a pitcher which goes into the refrigerator.
