Purchase options and add-ons
“Julia Bainbridge resets our expectations for what a ‘drink’ can mean from now on.”—Jim Meehan, author of Meehan’s Bartender Manual and The PDT Cocktail Book
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Bon Appétit • Los Angeles Times • Wired • Esquire • Garden & Gun
Blackberry-infused cold brew with almond milk and coconut cream. Smoky tea paired with tart cherry juice. A bittersweet, herbal take on the Pimm’s Cup. Writer Julia Bainbridge spent a summer driving across the U.S. going to bars, restaurants, and everything in between in pursuit of the question: Can you make an outstanding nonalcoholic drink? The answer came back emphatically: “Yes.”
With an extensive pantry section, tips for sourcing ingredients, and recipes curated from stellar bartenders around the country—including Verjus Spritz, Chicha Morada Agua Fresca, Salted Rosemary Paloma, and Tarragon Cider—Good Drinks shows that decadent brunch cocktails, afternoon refreshers, and evening digestifs can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone.

“With Good Drinks, the wonderful Bainbridge strips away the tired tropes surrounding ‘mocktails’ and shows us just how exciting the world of non-alcoholic drinking can be. Crucially, the book gives practical insight to a new set of tools, rules, and applications to ensure these drinks hit as consistently—and with as much brilliance—as their boozy counterparts.”—Ryan Chetiyawardana, a.k.a. Mr Lyan
About the Author
After building a career around why and how people gather, Bainbridge pivoted into why people don't, launching The Lonely Hour podcast to explore social disconnection and other forms of loneliness. In the three years since, the show has been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, Psychology Today, Women's Health, Bloomberg, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, the BBC, NPR, and more.

Of Me
I spent the summer of 2018 crisscrossing the country in my (somewhat) dependable 2006 Subaru Impreza. After a decade of writing about food and drinks in New York City and two years doing the same in Atlanta, I got a book deal—for this very book!—and I decided that the best way to do research was to put my foot on the gas and go.
I was in search of alcohol-free mixed drinks at a time when, serendipitously, they were starting to be taken more seriously. Bartenders were (and still are) pushing against the boundaries that had previously limited “mocktails” to syrup-laden juices or glorified Shirley Temples, and consumers—sober or not—were getting curious. I knew I wouldn’t be writing the first book on nonalcoholic drinks, but I also knew that my work could capitalize on this newfound acceptance and energy. And because I was finding the things I really wanted to drink in bars, restaurants, and cafes as opposed to in other books, I could tap the people whose job it is to make good, balanced beverages—no matter the alcohol content.
You could say I did a lot of drinking and driving that summer. In between interviews and states, my car’s (painfully outdated) sound system stayed silent as I mulled over pieces of this book. How odd, my friend Tunde commented, that I could drive for hours with no music. But I needed the quiet to think, as I moved along: “Which of these beverages are still on my mind days after tasting them? Which recipes feel fresh? Which drinks warrant the effort they take to make? How much of this book is about the drinks and how much of it is about me?”
Somewhere in New Mexico, I decided that all you really need to know about my relationship to alcohol is that I’m trying not to drink it—at least not for a good while. More important: I like to eat delicious things, I like to drink delicious things, and I like to do both with the people I love. There are many others like me, and the reasons they don’t drink booze vary: religion, health issues, substance use disorders, pregnancy, mindful living. Maybe alcohol simply doesn’t fit into their lives anymore. Maybe they’re just not drinking this week. Or this night. Or this hour. (I know plenty of people who switch back and forth between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks throughout the course of a Saturday night out.) Some statistics show that Americans are consuming less alcohol than they used to, and I hope that what I discovered on the road will get them into the kitchen. (Because it’s not about the bar; at home, good nonalcoholic drinks are made in the kitchen. More on that later.)
In Denver, Death & Co’s bartenders showed me how kefir whey gives body to nonalcoholic drinks (see page 92), which can be lacking in that area. Jermaine Whitehead handed me his recipe for the Rockefeller (page 166) from across the bar at Deep Dive in Seattle, and upon reading it, I realized I was going to have to dig through my spice cabinet, break out my 4-quart saucepan, and turn on the stove. (It ended up being worth it.) I sat in Gabriella Mlynarczyk’s living room in Los Angeles while she pressed watermelon juice with mint, rose water, and pickled plum vinegar. (Find a similar recipe of Gaby’s on page 66.) The next day, I drove back east thinking about that sweet, tart, saline drink, my tongue watering. And yes, that trip was quiet, too.
“I think I understand the driving-in-silence thing,” Tunde told me, once the trip was over. “Been walking in silence recently. It’s amazing.”
Now, though, it’s time to make noise. These drinks deserve a party.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2021Whether you're a nondrinker, looking to serve your nondrinking guests, or just want to explore how to make genuinely good drinks sans-alcohol, this book is for. While other reviews may say this book is challenging or "unusable," Julia Bainbridge has done a wonderful job indicating how much of a commitment level certain recipes require. Ones like The Bicycle Gang or Cherry & Smoke (both pictured) were easy for me to source the ingredients at my grocery store, or order a tea online. Others are more complicated, but I think just like those who are vegan or gluten-free often have to hunt down unique ingredients, so you should expect the same with this book. (And so far for me, it's been absolutely worth it, and total fun!)
The recipes are easy to follow once you have everything you need, and Julia's writing feels personal and friendly. She's tested every recipe herself after learning them from bartenders across the U.S., which means she adds plenty of notes on what worked for her, where to find unique ingredients, and more. It reminds me of the writing style of Alison Roman, Claire Saffitz, and Priya Krishna. Honest, specific, and here to make sure your recipe tastes and looks the way it should.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020I admit I haven't *actually* made anything from this book yet. But as someone who loves cookbooks and loves to put my own spin on things in the kitchen, I'm already so intrigued by many of its recipes. The author presents so many different flavor combinations and advises the reader on techniques for extracting the best flavor from ingredients both mundane and exotic -- I can already sense that I'm going to be applying some her lessons in harmonizing ingredients to other things I cook and bake.
I also appreciate how authoritatively she writes about the tools of the trade, including the glassware, as well as the gorgeous photos and the sparkling writing -- one of those rare cookbooks that's such fun, I'd read it in bed.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2021I'm a recovered alcoholic who was getting pretty tired of drinking soda water at parties, so this book was a life-changer. FAIR WARNING: Many of the drinks in here are not cheap, or even easy in some cases — there's a fair amount of pre-making, a handful of obscure ingredients that might be hard to come by, and in at least two cases a lot of steps. But if you or anyone in your crew is a sober person for whatever reason, it's completely worth it — there's a Salted Rosemary Paloma recipe in here that will change your world. And for the record, my wife, who still drinks, loves anything I've ever made from these recipes. I'm only giving this 4 stars because in addition to a lot of additional work in some cases, there are also some expensive and/or rare ingredients here so it's not really for everyone, and CERTAINLY not for every party. But when you need it, you'll be really glad you have it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2021This book is full of very useful information, and it is an enjoyable read as well. I bought it as a gift for a friend who is giving up drinking alcohol, and started reading it...I couldn't put it down. The author not only does an excellent job of providing well-researched information, but makes the material entertaining too! I love the fact that the author included a rating system for how long it may take to make each drink, and the information on various establishments that provide non-alcohol drinks. The book has very simple recipes (only 3 ingredients, which are most likely already in your home) to rather fancy drinks for parties. It also gave me several ideas of what else to buy as gifts for those giving up alcohol. My only wish is that this author is not discouraged by any bad reviews and periodically updates this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2020I'm loving the addition of this book to my cookbook collection! The creativity and nuance in the recipes are brilliant and exciting. Even as a spirits drinker, I love being able to have access to thoughtful and delicious non-alcoholic options. It also makes me a more thoughtful host to friends and family who don't drink (for whatever reason). As a foodie and home chef, I also can't wait to dig into the more complicated recipes and get creative in my own food pairings. The book is also a nice visual addition to my bar cart and a fun conversation starter when picked through. Cheers Julia!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024Alcohol doesn’t agree with me but I love having a special drink to sip at happy hour.
I’ve made about 10 of the drinks in the book and each has been complex and wonderful. I’ve had luck scaling down the syrups and other “make ahead” components so I’m not wasting the ingredients. I will say that each recipe is either a little time consuming (from making a syrup to straining a puree) and many contain obscure ingredients, but I’m happy to invest the time and money in giving myself a beautiful little taste adventure to sip. A great option if you’re willing to put some effort in and do some stuff from scratch.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2021This is a wonderful book to have for any beverage person! I love how each recipe is from a different mixologist around the country. I LOVE how these are Alcohol-FREE and the amazing message that you don't need alcohol to have a good time or to celebrate!! The photography in this book is STUNNING. Lastly, I LOVE how the recipes are rated with commitment aka how easy to how time-consuming they might be to make them. A great one to have and keep for years to come for when you need a drink yourself after a long day or any gatherings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Deludente
