Best tea brewer there is!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2011I would give up home Internet access before I'd give up this tea maker -- it is an AMAZING appliance.
I'm a budding tea connoisseur that loves loose leaf teas to be brewed correctly and at the right temperature. The Breville One-Touch Tea Maker is the only tea brewer I know of that does a phenomenal job of brewing tea that is to be enjoyed to the last drip.
What I love:
- Brewing tea is easy.
- The instruction manual is extremely well written.
- You can brew using their preset brewing cycle for several different types of teas or you can custom program it the way you like.
- You can wake up to freshly brewed tea with its Auto Start Option.
- There's a keep warm feature that works up to 60 minutes after the tea is brewed. You do have to turn this feature on after the brewing cycle and each time after you pour yourself a cup and return the carafe to the base.
- The way the brewing basket works is so space age.
- There's a Basket Cycle available that allows you to auto lift and lower the tea basket for maximum tea infusion--it aerates the leaves.
- The carafe top has a strainer in front that prevents any wayward leaves from escaping into your cup.
- You can boil water with this appliance for other uses.
- There's a space under the base for storing the electric cord, which I found of sufficient length but others might still think it's too short.
- It is simply a GORGEOUS machine that looks great on my counter top.
- It's a pleasure to watch the brewing cycle.
- You can wash all the parts EXCEPT for the base (obviously) and the carafe itself (that needs special care of wiping down or rinsing gently inside only)
What I hate:
- The cost --- it's the most expensive small appliance I've ever personally purchased in my life; but I'm not sorry I own it.
This is a superior tea brewer from a manufacturer well known for its quality products. However, despite how wonderful I think this machine is, it is certainly not for everyone. If you are a tea bag fanatic that covers up your tea with milk and sugar or only drinks black tea, then perhaps this isn't for you because you probably won't notice any flavor difference in the brewed cup. However, if you just love different loose leaf teas and want to experience the various subtleties in the liquor of these different brews, then this is "THE TEA MAKER" worth saving for.
Update November 23, 2012 - After using this tea maker for almost two years, I bought another one for myself as a backup or for when I want to make two different flavors of tea at a time. I cannot picture the day of having to live without this tea maker and since the price came down $50 (from my original price of $250), I decided to splurge and buy it for myself for Christmas. I have the Nesco TM-1 Teamaker, 1-Liter which is very good for brewing black tea but this Breville is the only tea maker I can't part with.
Update December 26, 2013 - I alternate between the two one-touch tea makers I purchased and I have come across one design flaw. I've noticed that water gets stuck in the carafe cover. I rinse the cover by hand and since it is made by two pieces screwed together, apparently the seal is not air and water tight. As a result, I hear water sloshing around inside. Sometimes I'm able to get it to drain out and other times it just stays in there. So far this is the only flaw I found after using one unit for 2 years and the 2nd one I purchased for 1 year.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2015I LOVE this machine! My absolute favorite appliance in the kitchen. It works so well, it is quite, easy to use, makes fantastic tea, and really is a tea lovers dream. I'm primarily a black tea drinker and for that, the variable temp control is less useful as one can boil water in many other ways, but the constant temperature during steeping and the convenience of setting it and walking away til it is done is great. I have especially felt this convenience when making tea for guests. In the past tea making was a multi-step process that required me to step away from the party to set water boiling, again to pour over leaves, and again to get the tea after having timed it. Now I can simply set it up and walk away knowing that it will alert me when it is all ready! [A word about guests: I prefer to offer my friends a variety of teas. The one draw back to the Breville vs my old method is one can only make one kind of tea at a time. So either I use the tea maker simply as a hot water kettle and make tea by the mug or smallish pot or I make one kind at a time. So I decided to hold on to my old hot water kettle so that if several guests want one kind I can make it in the Breville while the one or two that desire a different kind can have theirs made individually with water from the kettle. It is a rare logistical issue, but it does happen from time to time].
The Tea Maker has also given me a great appreciation for green and oolong teas. Green in particular was never "my cup of tea" ;) but after using the Breville Tea Maker I can really say that it makes a world of difference having it steeped at the proper temperature and not scalded by boiling water! The same goes for Oolong and White teas.
Now, obviously, it is pricey and was a total splurge/birthday money kind of purchase. But it is totally worth it. I use it several times a day and I've owned it for a little over six months and it still works great.
For care and maintenance I've used the "Revive tea cleaner" product to clean it and I've used more homemade solutions and both work fine to get rid of the residue that develops after continued use. However the Revive stuff really is super easy and makes it gleam like new.
Several reviewers have warned that this is a fragile item and, as it is made of glass, I can only imagine that is true! I've not dropped it or smashed it against anything and I warn everyone who might be tempted to wash it (like my wife or in-laws) that the base of the carafe is not to get wet and that has effectively scared all away from touching it but me :) So I'm careful to not mishandle it and all has been well.
I love this tea maker and can't imagine going back to a world before it. I miss it when I'm on vacation! If you are someone who loves the ritual of tea making, this will of course not really be up your alley. But for those of you who sometimes want to enjoy that ritual and often just want a good, bold cuppa? Spring for the Breville, it is well worth the expense.
Man, all this reviewing has me hankering for some tea, thankfully I've got some brewing in the kitchen as I type!
Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Consistently brewed, excellent tea with lots of user-definable control. Kinda fun to use, too!
I'm English, and have been drinking tea every morning for pretty much my entire life. Over the years I've tried dozens of teas, some bagged, some loose. I've tried many of the different tea-brewing gimmicks and soaking containers on the market, looking to make a better cuppa, but gave up on most of them fairly quickly due to the hassle of set up, brewing, and cleanup. Especially the cleanup. When cleaning time takes significantly longer than drinking time, there's something whacky in the process.
This tea maker popped up on Amazon during a search for something else, and I was intrigued enough to buy one. The unit is solidly made, easy to set up and easy to use, as well as easy to clean. It's also kinda fun! You set leaf tea (although I have used tea bags too) in the strainer, fill the pot with water, and turn on the system. The hot plate warms the water to a predefined temperature, then the tea basket lowers into the hot water and steeps there for a number of minutes, then raises again to prevent the tea being too strong. You then pour the tea as needed from the carafe, which stays warm on the hot plate.
The whole process is customizable as far as brewing temperature and the amount of time the tea steeps. There's some presets for common tea varieties, but you can set up custom settings any time you want. The beauty of the system is it is consistent: once you get the settings to exactly what you want, it's repeatable every time. You can also brew different teas using different settings, as some teas steep faster than others. And, since I like my tea more on the weak than strong side, I can get it set up perfectly for my taste. And I can trigger the brewing process by timer, so I can wake up to fresh tea! And watching the basket go up and down is fascinating!
The carafe holds 1.5 litres, which is a lot of tea; however, setting the water levels much lower than 500ml (a large mug full) mean the tea won't steep properly. The hot plate keeps the tea warm for an hour. The carafe is a solid glass unit, not flimsy in the least. The front panel is clean and easy to use, as well as easy to wipe down.
Since getting this Breville Tea Maker in place, I've been experimenting with more leaf tea from local speciality shops, and that has been an interesting process in and of itself. I have been extremely pleased with this unit, and, if you're a tea drinker, think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how good it is at making a decent cuppa. I got so used to tea bags it took a while to get used to working with this Breville unit, but now it's a part of my mornings. For tea drinkers, strongly recommended. Considering what many people pay for a cup of coffee some mornings, I can easily justify the cost of this unit over a year's worth of wonderful cups of tea.
The Breville BREBTM800XL makes great tea. And its fun to watch, too :)
Follow-up: I've had this tea maker in heavy use, almost every morning, for a couple of months now, and I absolutely love this device. Probably my favorite purchase for the kitchen in the past decade. I've experimented with various loose teas, strengths, and settled on a considerably wide set of favorites. Comparing to tea I buy at the local coffee shop, I can't believe I used to like that stuff! I've bought two of these for friends and family, I like it so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars La amo

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It! Highly Recommend (Worth the Splurge!)
Short Version:
Love love love love love! Breville gets it right again! This tea maker (which also doubles as a kettle) does everything you might want.
PRO: Auto-start feature; timed brewing; timed basket cycle; additional basket for stronger key; can be used only as a kettle.
CON: Base of carafe cannot get wet (not a big deal, but its not intuitive when washing) as it contains electrical components which connect to base and activate features.
Detailed Version:
I was shopping for a kettle when this tea maker caught my eye. I was worried I was overpaying, and unnecessarily splurging. Did I really need a machine to make tea for me? Was I that lazy that I couldn't swish around a bag or some loose leaf tea? I reluctantly admitted to myself that making tea is both a science and an art and I had never been able to master either. When you purchase a packet/tin of loose leaf tea, they often have instructions such as "Brew for 4-5 minutes at 95 degrees Celsius". With a kettle, I was never able to get the temperature and/or timing right. But, I wasn't sure I was willing to make this purchase. What cinched it for me was that the Breville Tea Maker can be used just to boil hot water (very handy!). I figured even if the Tea maker didn't work out, at least I would have a very expensive kettle.
Boy, did Breville surprise me! This tea maker is wonderful!
First: It has pre-programmed settings to identify green, black, white, herbal, and oolong tea. Love it! Tea maker also comes with a 1 teaspoon scoop which is very handy for measuring loose leaf tea.
Second: You can customize the tea brewing (i.e. temperature of water, brewing time, etc.) which is perfect for those unusual teas you pick up at your local store.
Third: The basket, which can hold tea bags or loose leaf tea, will slide into the water and brew for the length of time you set. It also has a basket cycle component which raises and lowers the basket. Furthermore, if the tea isn't strong enough for you, hold the basket button for 2 seconds and the basket will lower and stay in there until you want to remove it (then push basket button for two seconds again).
Fourth: My favourite feature - the Auto Start. The instruction manual will guide you through this process. Essentially, you can teach the machine (i) the current time; (ii) what time you want the machine to start brewing tea or hot water; (iii) customize the brew time (tea) and temperature (tea/hot water). Put the water and loose leaf tea/bags in the basket the night before. The next morning when you wake up, the tea is all brewed and ready for you.
Fifth: Auto Warm feature - for up to 60 minutes, the Breville Tea Maker will keep your tea nice and hot. It turns off automatically after 60 minutes, but I think after 60 minutes you can push the button again and keep it warm.
My husband, an avid coffee drinker, has been having tea every day on the way to work thanks to this awesome tea maker! We use it everyday and have had no issues - no smell or taste issues, no mechanical issues. That being said, if anything comes up, I'll come back and edit my review. While I enjoy this tea maker, it was not cheap. I expect every component to last for a long time.
The only con is that you cannot get the base of the carafe wet. It contains electrical components that connect to the base, which then reads and operationalizes your tea maker. While this isn't a big deal, it is counter-intuitive when washing (I keep having to remind myself, and I keep having a heart attack every time my husband takes the carafe to the sink!).
Overall, I would highly recommend this Breville Tea Maker. You do not need to be a tea connoisseur to enjoy this - and frankly, this Tea Maker makes it easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy one, you won't regret it.
This kettle is magic! I'm a pretty big fan of tea and have accumulated more mugs and strainers than anyone should have. I've been eyeing this Tea Maker for a long time now, and a good sale + an Amazon Prime subscription were what finally gave me the shove I needed to buy it. I'm so glad I did.
I'll try to keep it to the point. Things that I really enjoy about this tea maker:
-comes to a boil rapidly!
-easy to use
-works as a regular kettle
-attractive on your counter top
-custom options to make the tea just the way you want to
-you get to wake up to a lovely pot of tea in the morning
-keeps it at your set brewing temp for an hour after brewing
-the count up from time brewed is handy so you know how long it has been sitting there
-beep when brew is done is pleasant, loud enough to hear but not annoying
-it's like magic to watch
-very quiet, magnets don't make any noise
Things I don't like or would change:
-the "strainer" at the lid doesn't seal to the glass...so it doesn't really do anything
-the basket lets small amounts of tea escape, and the above mentioned lid strainer doesn't help at all. To be fair this is mostly a problem that I've noticed with Rooibos tea, but lets face it that stuff gets everywhere anyways.
-it stains up from the first brew. This isn't a performance problem as much as it is my own enjoyment of how pretty it is when it's shiny. The Breville cleaner that you can buy works perfectly though, and you can get it shiny again in about ten minutes if you want to.
-If there was a way to not have a plastic seal I'd prefer it, but it doesn't effect the taste of the tea at all.
-the "keep warm" button must be pressed again every time you remove the kettle. Not a huge deal, just an inconvenience. What i don't enjoy is that you get one hour to keep it warm and that's it. There isn't a way to press the button at the end of an hour to keep the tea warm for another hour. I'm sure there's a reason for this, but sometimes I'm slow when I drink tea.
-instruction manual shows you how to change temp from F to Celsius, but doesn't provide any conversion chart or show Celsius in the brackets, if the kettle offers both it should be included with the instructions.
-you will burn the crap out of your hand if you accidentally touch your fingers to the inside of the handle when you pick it up, where it shows the water measurement. Just an adjustment to a new kettle, but beware. Ouch.
Things to note:
-kettle has a larger capacity when used to just boil water than it does for tea. You can get 1500 ml of just water, but the max for a pot of tea is 1200ml. This will fill two decently sized travel mugs. If you have more than two people in the house with travel mugs you might be out of luck.
-you cannot use the basket agitation feature if the water is below 1000ml, and you cannot use the keep warm feature if the tea is below 100 degrees celsius
-if you speak french it includes alternate french stickers, which I just thought was really thoughtful. Not sure if that's because it was being sent to Canada, quite possible.
-this is a glass container so you need to be careful if you plan on brewing multiple back to back pots of tea. You'd have to make sure you're not putting cold water in it. it's common sense, but sometimes things slip your mind. If you need to boil large amounts of water just put a pot on the stove.
All in all I'm very very happy with this purchase. Breville never lets me down and I would buy this again in a second. It's extravagant, but if you have the means, or feel like splurging, this is a great way to do it. I have become the envy of my tea loving friends. Happy Brewing!
