9090 Coffee Maker
"I wanted to give this machinery the features that others do not have." With these words Richard Sapper described the idea from which he started to draw 9090 espresso coffee maker. It is therefore not a banal coffee pot but a real "steam machine" as the author also states. Made of stainless steel 18/10, 9090 is original not only for its special truncated cone shape but also for some functional innovations such as the enlarged base that allows to maximize heat, the anti-drip spout and the lever lock that allow one to open the coffee pot with a simple gesture of the hand.

The Designer
Richard Sapper
Richard Sapper was born in 1932 in Munich, where he pursued courses in philosophy, anatomy and engineering. He began his design career in the styling department of Daimler Benz in Stuttgart, before transferring to Milan, where he worked first for the architect Gio Ponti. In the early 1960s, Sapper began to collaborate with the architect Marco Zanuso together they acted as design consultants for Brionvega. He has developed and designed a wide variety of products, ranging from ships and cars, to computers and electronics, and furniture and kitchen appliances. Richard Sapper has received numerous awards for his products, and his designs are represented in the permanent collections of many museums internationally. He died on 31 December 2015.

The company
Founded in 1921 as a “Workshop for the processing of brass and nickel silver sheet metal, with foundry”, Alessi has always stood out for the high quality of its products. In almost a century of history, the company has gradually evolved to become one of the leading “Factories of Italian design”, capable of applying its expertise and excellence in design management to many different product types. Open to change and international development, Alessi at the same time has a strong bond with the traditions and cultural background of its area and continues to be synonymous with handcrafted objects produced with the help of machines.

Alessigraphy: the geography of Alessi production
Since the Company's Foundation in 1921 the Majority of Alessi Products have Been Manufactured through the Cold Working of Metals, a Tradition that is Kept Alive Today by the Skilled Workers at the Crusinallo Plant in Omegna.
Over time, Alessi also began to work with many other materials, such as porcelain, glass, wood, and plastic. A specific production method was developed for each one. Even when production takes place outside the Crusinallo plant, Alessi’s guidelines ensure the company’s original production quality standards, continuing to reconcile industrial technological complexity with an artisanal eye for detail.
The objects produced from the different materials are manufactured in various production plants across the world. They remain original Alessi objects in that they are conceived with the same design excellence and produced with the same attention to quality that sets the company’s products apart.

Product Description
The 9090 isn't just the first stove top espresso coffee maker in history: it was also first object for the kitchen after the 1930s, the first of many Compasso d'Oro awards (1979), first object to be inducted into the Permanent Design Collection at the New York MOMA, and of course it's the best-loved Alessi coffee maker bar none, as well as first "amphibious object", i.e. it is for kitchen use, but with its high design quality it can also be brought directly to the table.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2023Size: 6 CupVerified PurchaseThis is my favorite stovetop mocha pot. It is not cheap, but the build quality, ease of use, durability, and just genuine pleasure in using an excellent tool all make the 9090 worth the money (unless you are on a tight budget). I used Biletti stovetop mocha pots for years, and they work absolutely fine. The Alessi 9090 is easier to use since the top just snaps on and does not screw on. The 9090 is also a work of art or fine design more accurately. So, if you don't mind shelling out more money, you will enjoy it and it makes a fine coffee. A single word of caution: be sure not to fill beyond the pressure valve, do not top the coffee off in the ground coffee receptacle (leave less than you would with the Billet and leave a bit of space from the top for the coffee to expand into), and perhaps grind the coffee a bit more coarse than the Billet. Otherwise, you run the risk of steam escaping the junction of the water chamber cum coffee grind holder and the upper brewed coffee receptacle. The end result is little to no coffee entering into the upper brewed coffee receptacle. Coming from a Billet I made all those mistakes until I read the very wise response in the questions and answers.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2024Size: 10 CupVerified PurchaseThe Alessi 9090 M (10 Cup Size) is by far the best Moka pot that I have ever owned. When operated with some variation of the "Moka Pot VooDoo" by Thomas Greene or "The Ultimate Moka Pot Technique" by James Hoffmann, you will produce a world-class cup of coffee. If unfamiliar with these brewing techniques, they can be found on YouTube. This brewer does great with many different roast levels as well as a huge variety of single-origin specialty coffees (not just classic Italian dark roasts).
The build quality, ease of use and simplicity of cleaning is absolutely top-notch. The fit and finish is magnificent and without peer. The materials and aesthetics are brilliant. I cannot say enough good things about this particular Moka Pot. I have been brewing with a Moka Pot as my daily brewer for 18 years and I have used a lot of brands and models. The Alessi 9090 is by far the best that I have owned. This Moka Pot is worth every penny.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2023Size: 3 CupVerified PurchaseTrying to open this moka pot the first time was a bit difficult and loud… enough to make me initially think I was going to return it. After the first time opening it was easier and I’ve had no problems after. Been using it for over a week as my daily coffee maker. I bought the 3 cup size, in reality this size is one mug of delicious coffee for one. You could make a few espresso cups sizes I suppose. I love my coffee strong and this makes the perfect cup, extracts the true flavor of my French roast. The design is beautiful as expected and the quality is superb, very easy to clean. This is something that will last for years so the price for me is worth it. It’s a beauty!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017Size: 3 CupVerified PurchaseI bought this because it looked cool and because I thought the price indicated that it was superb. Since I drink coffee a lot, I wanted something superb. Not to mention all the amazing reviews.
The first problem I encountered was that after I used it only one time the reducer filter bent inward. It bent significantly to the point where coffee grinds were coming up in my coffee. So I thought, no problem, I ordered a new one which was only about five dollars. The same exact thing happened after the very first usage. But I had paid so much for the damn thing, I continued to use it.
I have been using it now for about a year. And when I originally went through the reviews I noticed that some people had some concern with the inside of the tank (broiler) -whether or not it was coated with something. Before I purchased it, I read as much information as I could, I watched videos, and it seemed to me that it was made of stainless steel and nothing else.
First I noticed it was rusting around the bottom- inside the tank/broiler. Not much, but it was rust. Then I started to notice that the inside of the tank is peeling. I started picking at it one day with my nail and it feels like some kind of calcium deposit or paint chipping up.. and it's all over the bottom of the tank. And it gets worse the longer I continue to use it. So no, the inside of the broiler is not 100% stainless steel.
