About

Mary J. Blige in Concert

Mary J. Blige has amassed an impressive eight multi-platinum albums, nine Grammy Awards, 32 Grammy nominations, a 2012 Golden Globe nomination and five American Music Awards.

Influenced at an early age by the music of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and Gladys Knight, Blige brought her own gritty, urban-rooted style - fusing hip-hop, soul and honest, frank lyrics - to the forefront on her 1992 debut album What’s the 411? The successful debut featured hits such as ‘You Remind Me’ and ‘Real Love’ and went to number #1 on the Billboard R&B/ Hip Hop Album Chart.

"Ms. Blige has established a hard-shell model of big personality female R&B: the sort of music, halfway between hip-hop and gospel that represents real talk and reasonable fantasy; deals with issues of trust, love and dependency; and accommodates midnight fears and self-congratulation.” - NEW YORK TIMES

“Mary J. Blige is best known for being one of the living, breathing queens of R&B, pop, and soul whose mere presence on our planet remains a constant blessing.” - SPIN

Worst Concert Experience Due to Poor Venue Management

by Dannie on 9/27/23Capital One Arena - Washington

I am deeply disappointed by the way the Mary J. Blige concert was handled by Capital One Arena management on September 18, 2022. This was the worst concert experience I have ever had. My spouse and I waited over two hours to enter the building and missed the opening act due to the ridiculously long lines. My spouse has multiple sclerosis which makes it very difficult for her to walk; she nearly lost her balance on several occasions while trying to patiently wait to enter the arena. When we asked staff members for directions to handicapped entrance, they gave us misinformation on where to access it. The show started almost 1.5 hours late. Capital One arena waited 45 minutes AFTER start time before letting people in. After we finally entered, the stage was not set up. We were not able to see Ella Mai perform, even though she was in the building; we later learned ongoing technical difficulties prevented her from performing. We sat for an hour and 20 minutes while the stage workers broke down the stage and reset it for Ms. Blige to perform. During this time, no one bothered to explain what was going on. Ms. Blige gave a great performance despite Capital One Arena’s poor logistical management throughout the night. Overall, it was not worth the money we spent. Capital One Arena management needs to do better by the customers who keep them in business.

    Concert was horrible

    by D. J. on 9/19/23

Mary J only sung snippets of her song because Wutang Clan was on the stage it seemed like 24hrs. She kept taking breaks in between show. I won’t be spending money on my favorite artist again. I will stick to her videos and albums ONLY!!!!!Madison Square Garden is horrible.

    ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS

    by Tig Best on 8/2/23

I have seen Mary before but this Strength of a Woman Festival was Unbelievable. The Friday show with Mary was a 5 Hour Concert, that i almost NEVER SAT DOWN FOR! Mary brought out Everyone. A Lot of Surprise Guest that had Atlanta Rockin all night long. Best concert i have been to in a long time. We went back the next day for the Lauryn Hill show and was Highly underwhelmed. Coco Jones was Fantastic, Lucky Daye was really Good, and so was Annie Tracy.. everyone else on that Saturday show of the Festival including and especially Lauryn Hill wasn't so great. However Friday Night with Mary and friends was awesome.. i would do that show again and again

    Horrible Sound

by Kia on 5/25/23State Farm Arena - Atlanta

The line up of artist was amazing. The arena sound quality was horrible! Multiple artist was making hand gestures throughout their performances about microphones and ear piece problems.

    SOAW Festival 2023

by Tye on 5/22/23State Farm Arena - Atlanta

Seeing MJB is always therapy for me, she leaves it all on the stage and each time I see her perform live I’m reminded of why I continue to remain a fan of her. She engages with the crowd and connects with her audience from a place of love, humility, and appreciation. She doesn’t take her gift for granted and it shows on stage.
