About

Born in the Azawagh desert of Niger, Mdou Moctar taught himself to play a homemade guitar and found his first fans in the West African mobile phone music trading network. After one of those tracks proved a standout on the cult compilation Music From Saharan Cellphones Vol. 1, he was signed to Sahel Sounds where his electrified, psych-influenced takes on traditional Tuareg guitar reached even wider acclaim.

But Moctar became even more of a cult figure as the star and soundtrack composer for Christopher Kirkley’s 2015 film Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai – a hit at film festivals around the world, and not only the first Tuareg-language feature film but also a Prince homage unlike any other.

Making his Australian debut as part of a trio, Moctar calls to mind Jimi Hendrix at his most mystical, as well as the West African desert-rock giants whose traditions he has twisted into something that feels entirely new.

    Moving Towards Heavier: Still Awesome

by Tranquilo on 3/25/229:30 CLUB - Washington

So Moctar started in a more folk/acoustic vein and then has been getting heavier. His latest album marks that, as obviously the current show. My own description is if Jimi Hendrix had been born in a nomad camp in the Sahara, this is it. Unfiltered psychedelic trance jams but through a different orientation. AND a new drummer who plays out of his mind all the time; reminds me of Keith Moon at 100% with no inhibition. It takes a lot to get me to a live show, but this totally worth it. Note: the crowd who loved him, was the NPR/PBS type; white, a little older for the venue, and open to world experience, one block from Howard University.

    Mdou Moctar was amazing!

by DesertBlues on 3/25/229:30 CLUB - Washington

I am glad I decided to go -- it was my first live event in two years and it was totally worth it. He was on top of his game. My only problem -- he barely played for an hour. Should have been longer.

    Incredible Atmosphere

by Ty on 3/25/229:30 CLUB - Washington

Mdou Moctar is one of the best live bands I've seen. The music speaks of the lead singer & guitarist's story, and leaves you entranced. The guitar is just unbelievable. I'll be going again next time they're in town!

    Awesome concert

Great concert, the band played so fast, and so together and yet still was able to improvise.
