My Lucy is a 12 lb rescue Poodle from the south, this was her first snow experience and she didn't love the snow at all. I got these boots, and she runs around leaping and playing and running as hard as she can, having a ball, with no problems at all. I had to learn the best way to put them on, but after a couple of trys, they go on very easily. I've had 1 box for a month, and she's still using the same 4 boots that I started her on, so they last forever. I rinse them every time I use them. Don't leave them on after you come inside, moisture can build up inside the boot.
I can imagine that the larger the dog, the more boots you would go through, but for small dogs, these are fabulous. She's not at all bothered by them.
Putting them on, if you are right handed:
If possible, put the dog on a table or counter. That's easy with little guys.
Using both hands, put 2 fingers of the left hand and the middle finger of the right hand just inside the lip of the boot and hold the opening open.
With your thumb and index finger of the right hand, snag a foot and insert in the boot. Make sure you insert far enough so the boot goes up as far as it can.
Give a treat
Repeat for the other 3 feet.
If you are left handed, I would imagine you would use the same instructions but opposite hands. They pull off relatively easily with a tug and a snap. Rinse the salt and sand off the outside, and drain til dry. If you need to rinse out the inside, be sure to let them dry completely upside down so moisture doesn't collect and stay inside the boot
Pros:
Inexpensive
Last a long time
Don't annoy the dog so they don't try to pull them off
If one gets lost, so what, they are disposable and inexpensive
Easy to put on once you try a couple of times
Everyone comments on how adorable she is in her boots (she's adorable anyway, but I'm okay with people smiling and enjoying it)
No salt in her paws
Keeps ice out from between the pads
Cons:
Can't think of any
Fast forward to two days later, when we used them for their intended purpose. I had them on her for about 5-6 hours, and they seemed to be holding up very well- I had just trimmed her nails, so there was no wear there. They stood up to the beach and the wooded areas of the island with no rips or tears. I was so happy they were working! Then, I noticed she was walking with a limp. I took off the Pawz to investigate, thinking maybe she got a thorn or something, and all of her little paws were so swollen! Her paw pads, toes, everything- the whole paw below the ankle where this thing covered was about twice the size they normally are. She never gave any indication at all that they were bothering her! Never whined or messed with them, never even paid them notice. I felt HORRIBLE. I didn't even consider the fact that dogs will often not give any indication when something is bothering them. She was MISERABLE for the rest of the trip- she could hardly walk, and spent most of the time hiding out under the picnic table. I carried her everywhere for the rest of the trip. It took TWO DAYS for her to stop limping and for her paw size to go back to normal. I am so worried at what lasting damage I could have caused by using these wretched things! They DID NOT seem too tight for her- in fact, I found it pretty easy to get a finger under the band to remove them.
DO NOT USE THESE! These should not be on the market. If you decide the use of this product is still worth the risk of the lasting damage it could do to your beloved pup, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION to your dog's behavior while he/she is wearing them. If there is ANY indication whatsoever of adverse effects, IMMEDIATELY DISCONTINUE USE!
PawZ are softer with more natural feel than the constructed boots. They offer her total coverage with optimal dexterity, are super secure, and stay on without squashing her due claws. She took right to them after only a 10 second test drive, only because they felt different.
I used these with our previous pup 15 years ago. They can be tricky to put on. PawZ has since developed a GREAT tool (PawZ JawZ) to help get them on much easier and my pup didn’t mind me using it. I laid it on the floor and let her check it out solo for a while first.
I definitely recommend both the booties AND the helper tool!!
