---|---|---|---|
High-Performance SteelA budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics. |
Attractive Blade FinishKershaw’s Bead-Blasted finish enhances a knife’s aesthetics and complements its end-use. The high-tech finish is achieved by applying a mixture of fine media onto the blade’s steel under high pressure, creating a smooth, non-reflective matte surface. Fine media includes glass and aluminum oxide beads that allow color variation and optimal performance results for an overall stunning effect. |
Fast DeploymentThe classic way to open a knife, manual action knives use a thumb hole, thumb stud or built-in flipper to safely deploy the blade. Holding the knife level at 90o angle, quickly and smoothly flick the wrist to maneuver the blade out of the handle. Place fingers along handle scales and apply pressure inward on the blade with the thumb. Manual systems do not employ mechanical assist to open a knife. |
Secure Locking SystemWith two steel plates, or liners, on the inside of each handle scale, the liner locking system safely secures the blade open and prevents unwanted blade closure. The lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent closure, and angles or is bent towards the blade tang creating a bias locked position. Apply manual force to move the lockbar to the side and fold the blade back into the handle. |

Manual FlipperFlippers on manual-open knives require user to push with quick strength until blade deploys. Some manual flippers disappear when blade deploys, others become a finger guard. Manual flippers appeal to inexperienced users as well as experienced users who prefer a classic, old-style opening. In both cases, ambidextrous flipper works as index finger applies pressure while closed knife sits in palm. |
Durable HandleVery tough, able to take heavy-duty hard use, and versatile, glass-filled nylon handle material is a nylon synthetic polymer reinforced with glass threads for increased strength. Glass-filled nylon has incredible stiffness for a secure and stable grip, great ability to withstand heat, and dimensional stability combined with excellent wear resistance. |
Convenient PocketclipKershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. A pocketclip with tip-down carry is positioned so the closed knife carries in the pocket with the tip of its blade pointed down. A reversible tip-up or tip-down pocketclip allows user to change tip position. |

The knife/tool combo is a lifesaver, and the lock has held up. The screwdrive r part is great and holds 4 1/4in bits in the side flip outs. It's perfect for the handy man and does the knife part very well.

My previous everyday carry-knife used to be a Leatherman Juice, but honestly besides the knife, the only other tools on it I needed often were the screwdrivers -- and those were a total bear to open, even with regular lubrication. I suspect the joints just get tighter over time, but it's so bad now, I need a screwdriver just to get the Juice's screwdriver bits out.
I honestly don't know what the longer-term durability will be for this Kershaw, but the low price (which I got as part of a Lightning Deal here, along with free Prime shipping) simply could not be beat. Even if it only lasts a few years, I'll likely get more daily use out of it than all my other knives and multitools combined.
(Update: 1/27/13: The more I've carried this knife, the more indispensable it's become. We moved in the last couple of months, and having this knife with me at all times has been a total life-saver. "Oh, I need a screwdriver to take apart and/or assemble this... no problem!" If I lost it, I'd absolutely buy a replacement ASAP. Oh, and by the way? That slot where the bit-holder fits when closed works well as a bottle opener.)
(Update 11/14/14: I still have the same knife, and still carry it every day, usually tucked into the front pocket of my jeans. The blade has needed sharpening a few times over the nearly two years I've owned the Kershaw 1920 Select Fire Multi-Tool, and the bits look just a tad tarnished, probably from perspiration -- but everything still works. By the way, when the hinge is properly lubricated, I have had no trouble at all opening the blade one-handed. The screw driver bits have come in handy more times than I can count, and even the hex bit holder can be used on appropriately sized nuts. Easily the best sub-twenty buck knife I've ever owned and if I ever lose it, I'll buy another. Fortunately, it's never been more than occasionally misplacing it. It's true, I do wish Kershaw had a slightly sturdier model available, and I'd gladly pay more for it if they did. But I've never regretted buying this one.)

These hold an edge very well. I put a shallow angled edge on mine intentionally for my purposes, so it’s normal for it to need a new bur more frequently.
The screwdriver feature is handy. I don’t use it every day, but it’s there when that random task pops up and you find yourself prepared. Any doubts you might have about it feeling clunky or the bit holders getting lose can be put to rest if you take my word for it. I’m on my fourth one, and I’ve never had any issues.
I don’t buy super expensive knives because losing those makes you quite sad, and this is a tool for me, not a matter of ego. As such, the value on this is worth what you pay for it times 10. It’s just everything you need from a knife and has the handy bonus of being able to tighten the screws on your doorknob catch when you notice them poking out.
The photo accompanying this review shows my “retired” knife. You can see how much steel I removed by sharpening it over the last five years. It still works fine, but I began to wish the thickness of the blade at the point was thinner for my purposes. The old one goes into a drawer as a backup in case I lose or damage the new one. I can’t walk out the door in the morning without a knife on. I just feel naked and unprepared.
Hope this helps you if you are considering this knife. I say yes. Get one. You’ll like it. I love it.
