Product Description

In this highly-anticipated followup to the original cooperative card game — winner of the 2020 Kennerspiel des Jahres — players work together to search for the lost continent of Mu. This new adventure takes your crew deep down into the abyss on a search for the fabled sunken land. How far you get depends entirely on how well you work together as a team. Card by card, trick by trick, your search party will discover the challenges that lie ahead and forge a path to Mu. This new version of The Crew has the same innovative cooperative trick-taking mechanic as the highly lauded original game — but with some exciting new surprises! While communication between your crew members is severely limited by your submerged state, it is also critical to your success; finding the hidden land in the murky depths depends not only on winning tricks, but also on carefully negotiating the order in which they are won. If things don’t go as planned, you might just be able to salvage the operation. But it will take near flawless execution and perhaps a little luck to finally reach Mu.

The Crew

The Crew: Mission Deep Sea is a cooperative card game.

The goal of the game is to search for the lost continent of Mu, the fabled sunken land. Missions start simple but get more complex as the crew gets deeper into the search. How far you get depends entirely on how well you work together as a team.

The game starts with players being dealt cards face down. Then, using limited communication, players work together to accomplish missions determined by a logbook and randomized task cards. Card by card, trick by trick, your search party will discover the challenges that lie ahead and forge a path to Mu.

Award Winning Series

The Crew: Mission Deep Sea is the highly-anticipated follow-up to the original cooperative card game, The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine — winner of the 2020 Kennerspiel des Jahres (German for connoisseur game of the year) award. It is not necessary to have played one to play the other.

This new version of The Crew has the same innovative cooperative trick-taking mechanic as the highly lauded original game — but with some exciting new surprises!

Unfathomable fun and excitement under the sea
Mission Deep Sea is my preferred version of this amazing game, a few tiny changes and some interesting changes have both increased my enjoyment of our games and made it a more replayable game to have on our shelf. You will find a nearly identical rule set, the same linen finish on the cards, rich colors, and artwork that is very eye pleasing. One of our players discovered the number 6 card has an Orca on it, and that bit of artwork sealed the deal for them and made the game all the more enjoyable. If you haven't already played The Quest for Planet Nine you may still wonder what all this is about. The Crew is a "trick taking" game, which is just a fancy term for playing a card from your hand according to color when you can with the highest card number played winning that round and collecting the cards. The basic idea is that you'd play your hand of cards until they are all gone, however The Crew presents thematic missions via the logbook and task cards that will influence when, and how you will play the cards from your hand to achieve winning objectives. This is a play together, win together game, if one task is missed or incomplete you've lost that round and can reset and try again. The included logbook will walk you through starting off on very easy missions and progressing you into increasingly more difficult ones where new terms and complications exist to make play harder. This is both friendly to new players of trick taking games and serves well to ramp up the excitement at a reasonable pace so that everyone can get in sync with one another and how they play. This is also a game of limited communication so being in sync is important but since the basic rules are easy to grasp anyone can begin deep diving into the fun with just a few introductory plays. Here is what I like most about Mission Deep Sea as opposed to Quest for Planet Nine, the first thing is an elimination of one feature from the first game and that is the task tokens. Previously these were assigned to tasks and gave additional parameters for how and when they must be fulfilled, and while this did increase the difficulty of gameplay and works well, I'm happier with the task cards themselves in this version having difficulty settings printed on them directly and no longer having to use additional tokens on the table. A simple great game does not need extra parts and Mission Deep Sea ramped up the efficiency and enjoyment for me by how the task cards are now handled, on the backs are difficulty numbers set beside your player count. When attempting each mission you draw cards until you equal the suggested difficulty number for your player count, the same card that is easier at three players can be increasingly difficult at five players or vice versa depending on their varied conditions. With more than 90 of these task cards you can find a huge variety of combinations that make replayability of the game huge, if you've gone through the 32 missions in the logbook or just want to do your own created game you can set and decide a difficulty based on your players and set up your own missions with ease. One other really exciting if not stressful introduction to this version are timed missions, meant of course to be completed start to finish in a set time or you lose. These force a faster play speed than what most players may be initially comfortable with, but also are great for teaching players to be more intuitive of everything that is happening on the table and I helps with prediction skills. It is an unexpected thing to encounter when first going through the logbook of missions but we found it super exciting, you do however have the option of choosing a different modifier to the game if the timed version is not for you.Being familiar with the first game, we've poked around the logbook out of order to test different missions and see how they work; we've played the two player variant which I think is still amazing and works flawlessly and had up to four players so far total. The higher player interaction at larger player counts is fun but not necessary to enjoy the game. As of now we'll keep both versions of The Crew on our shelf, some friends may prefer the space theme of the first over the underwater theme of this one, I have a feeling though that we will stick to Mission Deep Sea as our version of choice for quite a while.

The Crew - Mission Deep Sea card game is an absolute blast! As a fan of cooperative games, this one quickly became a favorite among my friends and me.

First and foremost, the concept of working together as a team to complete missions in the deep sea is incredibly engaging. Each player takes on a unique role, and communication and collaboration are key to success. It's refreshing to play a game where everyone's efforts are aligned towards a common goal, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.

The gameplay mechanics are simple to learn but offer plenty of depth and strategy. Whether you're coordinating moves to overcome obstacles or strategizing how to best utilize each player's abilities, every decision feels meaningful and impactful. The game strikes a perfect balance between challenge and accessibility, ensuring that both seasoned gamers and newcomers alike can enjoy the experience.

One aspect that I particularly appreciate is the replay value. With multiple missions to complete and varying levels of difficulty, no two games are ever the same. Each mission presents its own set of challenges and surprises, keeping gameplay fresh and exciting even after multiple playthroughs.

Furthermore, the artwork and theme of Mission Deep Sea are top-notch. The illustrations beautifully capture the mysterious and awe-inspiring world of the deep sea, immersing players in an atmospheric and visually stunning experience.

The Crew - Mission Deep Sea card game has quickly become a staple in our game nights, and for good reason. Its blend of cooperative gameplay, strategic depth, and captivating theme make it a must-have for any board game enthusiast. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or just looking for a fun and engaging way to spend time with friends, I wholeheartedly recommend giving The Crew - Mission Deep Sea a try. It's an underwater adventure you won't soon forget!

Love this so much have been buying it as gifts. 3-5 players. Super easy to learn if you are familiar with any trick taking card game (hearts, bridge, spades) and you can ramp up the level as you get used to the game. 4 ordinary suits with 9 cards each plus 4 cards in the trump suit. The player with the highest trump card becomes the "captain" of that mission. If someone has never played hearts or bridge, you will be stuck at level 1 for a few hands, and will have to do more teaching. Each player has goals (taking a certain number of tricks, taking more pink cards than green cards) and everyone wins only if everyone makes their goals, but you are only allowed limited communication about your hand (there's a whole story with underwater missions that makes this limited communication plausible that can be gone through if you always are going to play with the same group of people, otherwise we don't use it). Simple concept but super fun, and a round takes less than half an hour (though sometimes people get obsessed and want to play all night). Experienced board gamers and novices all liked it. As young as 9 or 10 could play with older kids and grownups: not sure it would work in a group of all 9 year olds. All 12 or 13 year olds would adore. Would also work for corporate team building exercises with grownups.

We love this game and play it often with just two of us and the "dummy hand". We have worn out so many of the Crew deck of cards and keep ordering new ones. This set is plastic cards so a bit slippery but so much more durable. We're very happy with this set. We have both the deep sea version and planet 9 version and play them alternately. Both are great but I would choose deep sea if getting only one.

I played the 2-player version of this game with my wife a few times. It's alright. Not super fun or something I want to come back to very often. This isn't a detriment to the game itself, I think it would be fun with more people but we have a distinct lack of other players here. If you plan on playing this with only 2 people I would find something else and give this a light pass. That said I love the artwork, cards, and overall quality packed into this box for the price.

A personal note, for me the lack of communication drives me nuts. I play card games to chat with people and have fun, but being a cooperative game and unable to communicate just gives me an "off" feeling. We use the Sonar token differently, if we play a sonar token we can talk about that card. The high-middle-low thing isn't well thought out. I can see how openly talking at all times about all cards would also make the game too easy unless you jack the difficulty very high (taking on more higher-value challenges in a single round) where even if you could talk it would be hard to win, so we have "open comms" matches that are higher difficulty and we can say whatever we want. And that is the fun with this game, a few small modifications and my issue with not chatting during a co-op game is fixed yet the game remains challenging.

My family is a spades family - every time we get together there is some kind of spades tournament happening. So for us, this game was a natural evolution of a game we know and love. Super easy to understand, surprisingly challenging, and straight up addicting gameplay. I haven’t wanted to do anything else since getting this game. 10/10.
