Tricky install… But once in *correctly*, a cheap alternative to ductless.
Latest update:All worked to end of cooling season 2021. Amazon finally had a sale and, I got another for the other bedroom to replace the old Kenmore. I will probably move the old Midea to the guest room and put this newer one in the master bedroom. Assuming, newer is better… But, since it is the middle of Winter, not doing that right away. Also, it was not supposed to be delivered until 2022. I hate these unwanted EARLY deliveries. I need this on my holiday charge card like I need a blizzard.----2021 update:I was able to link my Midea window AC with the Skill and therefore, to Alexa. After some time of non function.A few months ago, Midea F-up big time and, many lost Alexa for the AC. In middle of US July heat and humidity! Their Skill rating went to the pits. 2 stars. I lowered mine to 1 star. But, now it is working. I will give it a month and, raise it back to 4 stars. When it works, it works good. But, if it is not working, any app will go back to 1 star.To get Alexa Skill back, I first had to make a new Midea account password. This was one element that was broken that they seemed to fix. The other was the back end server just stopped working. Once I did that password update, I reloaded the Skill via the Alexa app. However, as predicted, the Skill seemed unable to find the AC unit. I ignored it and, sure enough, it had found it. (Why this happens so much across all kinds of devices and apps — Alexa, Apple, dozens of smart home devices, accounts, and other apps — and why the developers do not catch it, remains a befuddlement. I am now trained to just try it one more time then, quit and 9 times out of 10, it did find the device and all is fine.)So now I can say ”Alexa, turn Window AC to 72° F” and it does. Which it did for a whole year just fine, until Midea broke it.----Part 3:Despite the problematic install issues and design flaws I outline below, I like the unit. I have had it for over a year. My worries now is, just how long it will last! My other bedroom AC is a 12 year old Kenmore Energy Star and still works. But, I am so into the quite of this Midea unit, I want to replace it! However:You cannot find this Midea anywhere for a decent price. I began long before cooling season even began and, the price was nuts. When I check a week or so ago, the price was OK but, sold out. Clearly Midea is onto something here and needs to invest in more production and on fixing the various issues all the owners have discussed here!- Oh, one other small thing: I wish it had a fresh air port. The fresh air ports seem to no longer be provided on any brand but are handy when the humidity is low inside (due to the AC) but temp is high. If I open the small port, it sucks in just enough outside humid air into the blower into the room to bring it up a few percentages. Making the air cooler and not so dry. A feature useful in humid summer climates. Just a piece of plastic… maybe a small tube needed to go inside the connecting portion to the outside, for the U design. Diameter of a port is about that of a AA battery or two with an adjustable baffle to control how much outside air gets into the blower stream. Works great. I notice the change immediately. It is, essentially, adding in a little moisture to the AC air.Part 2:- The attached images show a few problems with installation. The large foam piece for the gap has a small ledge on it (rim?) which, the instructions are not fully clear on. But, as far as I can tell from the poor illustrations, it sits up and on the inside. Presumably to be an inside seal on the inside edge of the bottom of the window. The problem on my windows is that, it is just not working. The window comes to a stop at the right point but cannot get past that foam ledge. I added a piece to the bottom to bring it up in height and I think the window is stoping on the bottom of the “U” of the unit. No way to be sure though.- This leads me to the middle of the U in the unit. There are gaps in there. Foam is needed. But there is not dense and flat foam included. I'd be worried the remainder of the window gap foam, which is soft and goes on the inside, would absorb water and cause all kinds of issues. They need to include a higher density foam strip that can be placed on the bottom of the U so the window comes down on that to seal it off. No photo of his problem. No way to get a camera in there! There is also a small gap between the edge of the foam and the side of the U. I jammed some black foam in there (hard to see but in one of the photos closer in). This needs to be improved.- Another glaring gap, perfect for invasive stink bugs to get in or mosquitos, is under the unit. This too could be solved with a proper custom foam insert to slide into all the holes by the two rails and thinner gaps here and there. In the image, it shows that I did stuff some foam in but, totally inadequate! I honestly do not know how to fill this in. No, spray foam is not an option plus costly and hard to use for most home owners. The wood in the photos is to provide a better platform for the unit to sit on, otherwise it would be resting on a thin piece of vinyl window. It does not interfere with or cause any problems as it sits on the window sill on the inside of the home. The app has some UI and UX problems.- There is an option “Boost”. I have no idea what this does!- There is an LED button. This turns the LED and on off but does not provide visual feedback that the light is on or off! (I often run this unit not in the room to cool it down and, the LED will just attracts bugs so, in any mode, I like to turn it off. Remote LED on or off feedback is needed!)Cooling so far: Is quite fine!-------Part 1I need to run it for a while and then, give the full picture.Install IS NOT EASY. I have a design degree and even I was befuddled by the drawings in the manual. Some had obvious mistakes or were so oddly shown, they were of little help. The hardware for the install seems well made but, again, lack of clarity and bad instructions really make it a challenge.Despite taking a week to figure it out before I went past the install of the support bracket, some things are just not well thought out in the engineering for this. The unit DOES NOT center on the window. So if you install the support centered, the unit will be off center. I had to remove it, figure this out (them instructions mention this but, just one buried line, not a call out), and adjust the bracket. Even with that adjustment, the bracket was never going to let the unit seem centered in the window. The system of adjustment does not allow it.Once in and set, the next challenge is the foam. I am a designer so I am going to cut that foam perfectly! NOPE! forget it. The stuff is awful to cut clean. Even with a stainless steel ruler and a new blade, it is not a clean cut. When you slide the foam in, surprise, you need to add some layers to make it work. They thankfully give you those. But then, the WORST part was that when I had to pull the foam out to add to it, the sliding anti tilt bars JAMMED! Ugh. Now it is a second time I have to pull the whole unit out! The bars can jam into each other and totally lock in place. The fix is to take both in your hand and as though it is a steering wheel, turn them to the right. This allows the jam to unjam and they slide fine after. After getting all that fixed and foam cut right and installing. I found that the automatic horizontal louver moving is pretty anemic. Admittedly, I thought it was vertical too. So that whole thing is just a joke. I keep it off but, then the top flap drops down so much, it pretty much keeps the air only shooting out to chest height. Uhh, I want it to go up more to say, face height. The app is OK. It at first would not set up on my network (all Apple Airports) which is not typical of most devices. Usually they just go on and done. But oddly, when I quit the app to try again, it came up ON the network. So the network set up is fine but the app is buggy and does not show it is set up unless you quit it and open again.I have it in an attic like second floor in a Cap Cod home for a bedroom. Just under half the house plan. Needless to say, the BTUs needed for the second floor are about 16,000. So another 8000 unit in the other half of the second floor (another bedroom) do the job. Sadly, a small bath room remains a furnace. Why don't they make a 2000 BTU for small bathrooms? I'd buy it! Better yet, make it a heat pump too. The bathroom is an icebox in winter. It seems to handle average summer temps and humidity well in the Mid-atlantic USA OK so far (one day). We have a 90+ day soon and July is nuts here so, after July is over, I will have a verdict.More to come in update later!

    Style: 8000 BTUVerified Purchase
We bought the Midea 8000 BTU unit to replace a portable rolling unit we use in the kitchen/breakfast area during the hot Georgia summers. The biggest complaint about the portable unit was the noise which made conversation difficult. I'll start with the pros and cons and then describe our experience so far.

    Pros:
    - Much quieter than the portable unit we had. From about 4 feet away with the compressor on and the fan on high, it's about 65 dB. With the compressor off, and the fan on low, it's about 45 dB. I should have tested the sound level on the portable unit first, but I'd estimate that it's about 80 dB.
    - The Midea puts out some seriously cold air. My wife said "it's too cold", and turned the temperature up :-) It easily keeps our kitchen cold and would work in a much larger room.
    - The installation is relatively easy even for one person. I watched a Youtube video two times before starting, and it was straightforward. That said, I did take my time and start to finish including cleanup took me about 3 hours.

    Cons:
    - There are small gaps where the bracket attaches on the interior side of the window and also where the unit sits on top of the bracket. Not a big deal, but you have to take extra sealing foam strip and stuff it into the gaps to keep out bugs and a small amount of outdoor air. The gaps are maybe 1/4" at most, but you still want to seal those up.
    - The unit is small but it still takes up some window area. The saddle style does better in that regard but costs almost twice as much.
    - The unit might be heavy for some for solo installation. I'm a small but fit guy, and managed it fairly easily using a small table to set it on before sliding it into place.

We received the Midea unit in 8 days and did not have any issues with the condition of unit or packaging. All good there.

I started the installation at about 8:30 am when it was still cool. The window is 23" inches wide and has a wood frame and a storm window. That wood frame point is important because the installation is different than the vinyl frame installation I watched on Youtube. Vinyl windows have an interior lip that helps hold the bracket in place before the bracket has been screwed in. On a wood frame, there's nothing to hold the bracket from sliding out the open window because of the weight of the outside part of the bracket. In fairness, you can unscrew the interior portion of the bracket from the extern part, but the screws were under some insulating foam so I chose not to do that. I ended up taking a 4" piece of scrap 2x4 and wedging it between the storm window frame and the bracket. That kept it in place while I screwed in the bracket to the side of the window frame. The remainder of the bracket install was easy. I setup up the outside supports so it was slightly lower on the outside for proper drainage. The manual describes it as being 1/4 bubble on a level. Ours is probably slightly more than that with the weight of unit on the bracket. Be aware that storm windows can prevent the unit from leveling properly, specifically, sloped toward the interior which you don't want. We did not experience that issue, so we did not have to add a piece off wood on the interior to raise the height.

I thought I was going to need help lifting the unit into position. The description says 55 lbs, but it didn't feel quite that heavy to me. I got a small wooden table that was almost the exact height of the window and put that directly next to the window. I put the unit on the table first which was the heavy lifting part. Once on the table, I could line it up with the window with having to hold the weight of the unit. I then carefully slid the unit into position on the bracket with the table bear most of the load until the unit was fully on the bracket. The brackets and the bottom of unit are a durable painted finish and slid easily once the unit was more a less in place on the bracket. What I thought was going to be the hard part was actually the easiest.

The last part of he install was getting all the sealing faom in place. This actually probably took the longest and was simple but tedious. Midea recommends cutting the side foam blocks 1/4" over the measured length. I found that hard to fit into the gap and had to cut it back by 1/8". Also, the wood frame requires a second foam block below the main one, and that has to go around the bracket piece that's screwed into the side of the frame. To get that to work, I had to cut some partil vertical slits in the foam block to fit properly over the bracket. The anti-tip brackets have to slide over the side foam, and that was difficult because the foam was too tall despite being firmly seated on the bottom. I had to press the foam down with either my finger or a screw driver, move the bracket a little bit, then repeat the process several times until the anti-slip bracket was in place. Not a huge deal, but it wasn't as simple as just sliding the anti-slip bracket in place. Last, I looked all around the mounting of the unit and sealed up any tiny gaps with some foam stripping I had around. There were pretty small gaps, but if you have a lot insects like we do here in Georgia, you'll want to seal those up.

The whole install took me about 3 hours including cleanup. I wasn't in a hurry, and I took my time to make sure I did everything correctly. I looked at the instructions some, but mostly worked from memory from the Youtube video. As with almost every project there are little idiosyncracies that you have to handle. For example, I bet it took me about 10 minutes just to get the storm window screen out. That was annoying. Having another person might have shortened the install time as well. Overall, I'd say the install was pretty easy after figuring out how to hold the bracket in place to put the initial screws in place. Having two people would have really helped with that part.

The unit is definitely quiet and puts out significant cold air. My wife said it was "too cold" and turned the temp up from 70 to 73. It got up to 92 today, and the unit has been cycling on and off (mostly off) while keeping the kitchen nice and cool. The remote has a decent sized display and does what you expect it to. We also connected the unit to the Midea Air app, and again, it does what you expect it to. The app also shows the local weather which is a nice feature.

All in all, the Midea is a huge improvement over the portable unit it replaced. It keeps the kitchen cool and does it quietly. It's also a good value based on comparisons we did with other brands and styles. We would definitely buy this a/c again and would recommend it to others with similar applcations.

Quiet, cold, and relatively easy to install

I almost never write reviews on Amazon, but I couldn't resist for this product. This air conditioner is truly the best design you can get. Almost everything bad or inconvenient about in-window AC units is totally resolved by this product. It really is impressively quiet thanks to the "split unit" design where the window is used to create a barrier between the compressor and front. Not only that but thanks to this design in conjunction with loads of provided insulating foam, it keeps the heat out, and in.

I've always scoffed when I see people leaving their window units in through the wintertime, especially in areas of the country where winters are cold because it is such a waste of heat. Traditional accordion-flap design ACs barely insulate in the slightest and is effectively equal to just leaving your window open through the winter - not a good idea. But, you can honestly leave this air conditioner in the window through the winter thanks to how well it is insulated. I took a gamble on that and left it in the window in mid February and there was very little heat loss, so pick a window and you can basically set it and forget it.

In addition to the exceptional insulation, it's powerful. I use it in a loft that is very poorly insulated so it absolutely bakes on summer days, but it runs all day and keeps it comfortable. You can simply set the desired temperature, put it on eco-mode, auto cool, auto fan, and it will just passively and automatically keep the space perfectly comfortable, turning off completely when no cooling is needed. It has a very strong fan with a moving vane that directs air like 10 feet away and distributes it throughout the room.

One of the major issues with window ACs is security. Unless you screw directly into the window sash and ruin your window warranty, anybody can lift the window and break into your home. They even solve this issue to a degree. There are latches inside the U-split where the window can be prevented from lifting up on the outside. This definitely makes it harder to break in but still not impossible since you pull down the top window sash still, but it's an improvement nonetheless.

The only things that could be improved really is the dimensions. The U-split is a little too narrow to fit both the screen and the window sash, so I can't close the screen with the window open. Also the front part of the air conditioner that is inside the room protrudes from the window pretty far, probably at least 6 inches. So keep that in mind if you are tight for space or have furniture near the window, it will need more space than a traditional AC unit.

Installation is more involved than a traditional AC but it is only because of the ability to open the window with it installed plus the extra insulation. It is well worth it and shouldn't take more than an hour. Also once you cut and install all the insulation for a particular window, it's easier to remove an re-install seasonally in the same-sized window if you choose to do so.

Of course it has smart features and app integration too so you can control it remotely, etc. Also I cannot stress how fantastic it is to be able to shutoff the display! I find it difficult to sleep when there is a bright LED display in the dark. This feature is called "night/sleep mode" or something like that, and if you press buttons on the unit the LED display will illuminate for a few seconds and then shutoff. Perfect. Do not lose the controller because there is no button to enable this on the AC itself.

Hopefully the build quality is good so it will last a long time; but basically this is the best air conditioner you can buy. After using it I don't think I will ever buy any other window air conditioner ever, everything else is worse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing AC unit

This thing is new so don't have any idea how it will age, but so far it's pretty amazing. It's super quite, at the highest setting it's still something I can sleep with on easy but most of the time it's very effective at lower settings and whisper quite at those.

The window bracket is a definite improvement on past setups, had to do some jerry rigging as it was an inch sort of the width of my window frame even fully extended [but thankfully they thought of that] and my sill didn't quite line up to give the bracket legs a good perchance. Too sallow.

But can be set up so that it rests over an edge instead of in the track. So just installed some wood to raise the point at which it rests, that locks into the tracks. And then rested the ledge rail over the edge of that. That also too care of the issue with where the legs rest raising them up as well. I've included a photo showing that. All works great and so far very pleased with this unit.

Real Human Update One Year Later: we're into our second year with the 8,000 BTU U-Shaped unit I got and it's really the best window AC I've ever had. Way more quite and very efficient. Just having the window more closed alone helps with all that but also even outside, it's half or less the noise of my other more conventional units. Would and have recommended.

This is a fantastic product for two reasons. It is QUIET, and it is energy efficient.

FIVE STAR PART: The unit installs in classic vertical sash windows, but unlike conventional window units, it separates the compressor, motors, and fans from the controls by allowing the lower sash to divide these elements. Brilliant: efficient moving components outside and cool, dry air inside. The space for the lower sash is also wide enough to permit a window blind to function in the gap. This allows light blocking, which is not something one would have thought important, but is, and it is very slick. The marketing literature talks about being able to operate the lower slider if you want fresh air, which seems silly. There is already a fan setting to bring in fresh air, and it is a fair bit of effort to make sure everything reseals when moving the sash. I think the marketing team went a little too far in this one and the notion detracts attention from the overall design excellence of the product.

It is very thoughtful to include a remote control for those needing one, and the voice access through Wi-Fi provides even more accessibility options. I am fortunate enough to not need these, and the on-board control layout of the unit is excellent! Although it took me a while to get used to a display that only showed the temperature setting and not the room temperature, it turned out that the unit is so good that there is rarely a difference anyway.

THREE STAR PART: You may have a little effort on your part to get the mounting bracket to work, since it is designed for specific sill configurations. A few people must be lucky, and it all works out, but our outer sill was too big. So, when the unit is installed, we put a conveniently sized brick on top of the sill (shown in the picture) and don’t use the rear angled support arms. We also put a thin piece of rubber between the metal of the mounting bracket and brick to reduce possible vibration transmission. (My calculations show it's very safe since the majority of load goes through the wall of the house in compression. Plus, the additional load is quite small. But we leave critical decisions of this nature to lawyers; think of this a shared experience from a questionable source.) Once you get the unit positioning sorted out, the mounting bracket is a dream, and next year's install will be easy-peasy.

I strongly recommend this unit! The price and effort are well worth it but do your homework.

Greatest Air Conditioning Units manufactured by Midea. I was introduced to this company/manufacturer in Greece. My two bedroom apartment is cooled down by using Midea. Very cost effective, cools better than any other manufacturers units ever did so I decided to try this new model and unique style here in Canada. Best thing I ever did. So quiet and keeps my 700 square foot living room and dining room very cold.
    I highly recommend this manufacturer.

Fairly easy to install following the provided instructions. A second person would make it much easier. Very effective cooling and the app features (scheduling especially) are great! Very effective at removing excess heat and humidity in 1 bdrm apt.

The remote control doesn't seem to update its status if you change anything using the app or front panel. A couple extra button pushes but not much of an inconvenience.

A couple other things of note; there is no air exchange damper like many window units have.
Also yes, you can still open your window but having removed your screen for installation, there is nothing stopping insects from entering. A small replacement screen in a frame should be to make for insertion between the A/C lower frame and your raised window.
