Ok, so I went back and forth on wireless probes for a minute. I almost went with Meater, as they highly advertised the dual sensors, with the ability to read ambient air temp inside the smoker/grill/oven, and I hadn’t seen that listed for the TempSpike. Then I read a bunch of comments about connectivity issues with the Meater, so I let the idea die. Before I knew it, college football was almost on us, and I received an ad suggestion on social media for the TempSpike. It was a video ad, and it mentioned dual sensors, with ability to read ambient air temp. Don’t ask me why this is so important to me, but I just always want to know if the temp in my smoker is what it says it is. It’s hard to manage cook times, if my smoker isn’t cooking at the temp I set it for, and it tells me it’s doing. I’m a big fan of Thermopro, as I’ve been using a wired set for the last three years, and they’ve never failed me. So I bought these. First cook was last night, a pork butt and two brisket flats. It’s now 9am, and here I sit on the patio, drinking coffee and enjoying the end of the cook. Brisket flats are resting, pork butt is wrapped, and I tossed some pork belly on for burnt ends. I have a friend, who loves burnt ends, but she recently had a kidney removed, and she can’t do beef anymore. Anyway, here are my thoughts. Build quality - These things are built well. The probes and the booster are sturdy and feel high quality in the hands. The app connects quickly and is easy to set up. It also has a ton of features, to customize and record your cook. Very cool. Performance- This is where the missing stars went. I popped these things in the meats, one in a brisket and one in the butt. Set up my cook parameters for both, and off we went. Now, being the skeptical fellow that I am, I pulled out my wired unit to test these things, especially after I saw the ambient temps read in the 150s, when my smoker was rolling at 250. I put a wired probe in one of the briskets, positioning it on the same end as the TempSpike. Then, I positioned one right next to the ambient sensor for the butt, as it was the closest to the heat source. The internal meat temps of the two probes were within two degrees of each other. As I stated, I’ve used Thermopro for years, so this didn’t surprise me. However, the ambient temps weren’t even close. There was 43 degree difference. I attached pictures of the two different temps, taken five hours into the cook. Now, this isn’t a deal breaker, as I can work around it. But when you drop $140 dollars for a set of these, you expect them to do what they’re advertised to do. And I’m disappointed that I have to do a work around for my ambient temps, as I was so excited to have this ability, without extra set up and running more wires. This is why I only gave it three stars. Battery life - This was my concern. Were the batteries for all three pieces strong enough to last through a 12 to 15 hour cook? Those butts can hit a wall and be stubborn. The answer is yes. Twelve hours in on the butt, and still have half battery life left. Im very pleased with this. Connectivity- No issues here. I did lose connectivity to the phone once, when I went into the bathroom on the opposite side of the house. Other than that, worked like a charm. Overall, it’s a solid product. I love the app! When I do overnight cooks, I set an alarm for every two hours, to spritz the meat and make sure my pellets are not backing up. One hour before my final alarm, a notification on my phone woke me up, telling me the briskets were at temp. There’s also an alarm to tell you if the ambient temps drop too low or go too high. I turned these off, for reasons I gave above. The only killer here, and for me, it’s a big one, is the ambient air sensors. It’s a feature I wanted, and Thermopro me let me down in this department. I really thought I had hit the jackpot getting these $60 cheaper than the Meater. $140 is easier to justify to the wife, than $200+. Would I buy them again? I’m still on the fence with that. Not having awkward wires everywhere, when I’m working with the meat, is nice. But I still have that one, for reading ambient temp, and it’s eating at me. Would I recommend these to others? Not if you want accurate ambient air temps. But if you want a solid meat probe, with no wires and a very cool app, definitely worth it. In closing, Thermopro, you let me down on this one. I feel like the ambient sensor was a last minute thought that was rushed, to match the competition. It definitely needed more time to get it right. But the important thing is the temp of the meat. That’s where the money is at. It’s just not going to get you five stars, because you failed to meet advertising claims. It’s that simple. Hopefully, you guys work on this and make it right for future models. I would love to go completely wireless. Oh, and this thing will give you an estimated cook time, with counter. Don’t follow it. I knew this wasn’t going to be accurate, and I was correct. But I didn’t buy it for that.
