Editorial Reviews

Mj Lenderman is a songwriter born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. The anatomy of an MJ record might go something like this: warped pedal steels and skuzzed out guitar; crackin' a cold one with some buds; a voice reminiscent of the high-lonesome warble of a choirboy. Songs snake their way from a lo-fi home recording to something glossier made with longtime friends at Asheville's Drop of Sun studios, but the recording setting doesn't seem to matter much - at it's core, a Lenderman song rings true.Manning Fireworks is a remarkable development in Mj Lenderman's story as an incredibly incisive singer-songwriter, whose propensity for humor always points to some uneasy, disorienting darkness. The punchlines are still here, as are the rusted-wire guitar solos that have made Lenderman a favorite for indie rock fans looking for an emerging guitar hero. There's a new sincerity, too, as Lenderman let's listeners clearly see the world through his warped lens.

I really, really like this album. Probably my favorite album of this year. I am really drawn to the sound...to me it is perfect blend of raw and right. The vocals are plaintive and the lyrics a bit masked in their own region of the mind. MJ owes a lot to Patterson Hood and the Americana artists who came before, but that's all right. On this album he captures what I am often looking for.

Live MJ and he has really developed into a generational artist here. He’s the Gen Z’s Steve Malkmus. Highly recommended.

I love this record, but this pressing is warped. You can see the hill/valley rise and fall on the platter and I have a good, heavy, high-quality turntable. I double-checked the slip mat and played a different record fine just to make sure. The center of the pressing seems flat and proper and those songs sound great. Having been in a band that released vinyl, I know bad pressings happen and it's not the artists fault, of course. I might not even bother returning it, because I don't feel like it. I'm not disappointed, because I know these things happen, and it's the music I care about.

Not one listenable song on the whole album. The words are trite and fake. I feel ripped off. Must be a trust fund kid spending daddy's money. There is not one bit of art in this album.

Such a great sound reminiscent of country stars if old but it's own sound. Can't stop listening to it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Una delle rivelazione dell'anno

Hadn’t heard of this guy until a couple of weeks ago but have fallen in love with this album since then. Enjoyed it enough to get the vinyl - no regrets at all, cracking album.
