Fine shoes for exercise walkinig
First, let me say, these are athletic shoes from New Balance, not fashion statements. If you want cutesy running shoes, then order running shoes. I received these yesterday to replace my 6-year old New Balance 847 walking shoes. I read the reviews stating the toe box is large and boxy. Gee... The shoes fit very well. My feet feel well enclosed and do not move about anywhere. The toe box is perfect and also not loose, no matter how boxy they look. I went out for my 4-mile walk today and they felt great. Not too spongy in the sole and the sole has just the perfect amount of flex for shoes designed for...(Gasp!) walking for exercise. Are they cute? Maybe in a sort of armed forces way. They are certainly great looking to his old soldier (I'm 77). They are a nice replacement for a pair of shoes that are only worn for my long walks. I think I'll keep them.

FITS WIDE, THIN SOLE , CAN FEEL THE GROUND, I EXPECT YEARS OF SERVICE JUST LIKE MY OTHER NEW BALANCE SHOES,
  • Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2013
The 877 shoe from New Balance is not only great for cross training as it's advertised, but from my experience, turns out to be a comfortable relaxed fit for casual walking/running and everyday use. The main reason I say this is because compared to other shoes that I have worn in the past, these shoes don't bother my feet when worn for considerable amounts of time throughout the day.

I bought the previous 813 model around a year ago, and despite a couple of very minor gripes I had with them, the comfort of how the shoe felt when it was worn was undeniable; they were easily the most comfortable shoes that I owned at the time. The biggest (albeit very minor) gripe I had was that the area covering the toe was noticeably thin and seemed very fragile and easy to rip. I'm glad to see that the 877, the stated replacement for the 813, addressed this issue and made that area look and feel more durable.

As for the look of this shoe, I think the style of the shoe is an upgrade to the 813's design as well. Of course this is a personal preference.

However, the biggest factor for me when buying and wearing shoes: are they comfortable to wear and how do they feel when worn all day? A shoe can look great externally, but if it's not comfortable then what's the point? I'm glad to say that I found these shoes very comfortable. I wore them on a trip to the zoo recently, where I logged over 10,000 steps in half a day, and my feet did not feel sore at all. I noticed that some complained about the cushioning that the shoe provides, however that is a plus for me. I like shoes that provide cushioning when walking, and I didn't find it to be a problem. That was also something that sold me on the 813's, so I'm glad to see this carried over in the upgraded 877's. As I alluded to in my opening paragraph, these shoes do not seem to bother my feet when worn for a considerable amount of time throughout the day; they do not feel too tight and therefore allow my feet to breathe. I bought two pairs (one black, one grey/blue) and plan to use them for gym use as well as casual daily use.

I’ve worn the 877 for 8 years. Each year I buy another pair and rotate them on a weekly basis. I still have and wear my original pair. As other reviewers have mentioned, these shoes are now being made in Vietnam. In my photo, the shoe label on the left is a three year old shoe and it was “assembled in the US.” The shoe on the right is one I got this week. It says “made in Vietnam.” I wish they were still made here but the Vietnam made shoes are still true to size. They always fit properly and the pair I just got seems to have more support in the heel. I need that because I am susceptible to gout and need a soft shoe that provides good support. I haven’t had a gout attack since I started wearing the 877.

Other reviewers have said they look like old man shoes. I think they look OK. The gray color goes with any clothes and they can be worn with any outfit. They are very comfortable to walk in and I walk 3 miles a day. The 877 holds up quite well. They are not waterproof so be careful to avoid puddles. I have had a couple of pairs come with laces that were way too long. I try to work around this by making an extra large loop when I tie them. The last two pairs that I ordered, the made in Vietnam ones, have laces that are the right length. Other reviewers have mentioned that the toe box is too narrow. I haven’t encountered this problem. I wear size 8D, which is smaller than the size worn by most of the reviewers who complain about a narrow toe box.

There hasn’t been any drop off in quality since I first started wearing the 877 eight years ago. The newer ones seem to made a little differently, but I haven’t had any problems with mine. I highly recommend that 877 for anyone who needs a good walking shoe that can be worn all day long and which can hold up to long walks.

Initially, the shoe felt comfortable and well padded. After a week or more of wearing, my feet felt quite sore from lack of support. The removable insole is rather thin with little arch support. I replaced the insole with a thicker more shock absorbent one for greater comfort. Like all mesh shoes, expect the material to stretch a bit requiring tighter lacing for a "snug" feeling.

The New Balance 877v1 walking shoes are designed for comfort and stability on smooth surfaces. Key features include:
    • Upper: Suede/mesh combination for breathability and lightweight feel.
    • Midsole: ABZORB cushioning for enhanced comfort and shock absorption.
    • Toe Box: Roomy, accommodating wider feet.
    • Outsole: Broad, stable platform with Walking Strike Path technology for gait stability.
    • Best Use: Ideal for long walks on pavements or evenly surfaced trails, but less suitable for technical terrains or loose sand due to its wide design and mesh material.
These shoes are well-regarded for their durability, comfort, and supportive fit, especially for those with wide feet or requiring moderate arch support. However, they may not be the best choice for off-road or rugged trails

I have wide feet and for many years, over 2 decades, New Balance have been my go-to brand for best fit. These shoes don't disappoint. I use them for my main main daily shoes. I find these so comfortable with excellent cushioning, comforting grip and good support. I'm not a runner and until recently I lived in the country and these shoes were not worn in the fields. But I still have my previous two pair going back five and then 10 years approximately and they're both very wearable. I've kept them for when doing painting or similarly mucky work.
