Editorial Reviews

Magdalena Bay, the Los Angeles-based duo of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, create magical pop music that floats in the ether of our collective social cosmos. While they call California home, their essence lies in the clouds, emitting unique yet familiar frequencies of synthesized nostalgia, kitschy catchiness, and warped neo-hooks. Suited for the times, Magdalena Bay blends the known and felt with innovative sonic landscapes. Tenenbaum and Lewin met as teenagers in a Miami high school music program. Tenenbaum, who moved from Buenos Aires to Florida at age one, and Lewin, a guitar shredder influenced by his dad’s prog and concept rock records, quickly recognized their kindred spirits. They formed a prog band called Tabula Rasa and began a romance. Both were skilled musicians; Tenenbaum a pianist and singer, and Lewin self-taught in production and music theory. Despite attending different colleges, they maintained their band, traveling hours to rehearse before realizing two things: their relationship was undeniable, and prog rock wasn’t resonating with young audiences. Shifting their focus to pop, they explored its craft, leading to the creation of Magdalena Bay. They learned the complexities of pop writing and production, striving to create something interesting within the genre. Describing their music broadly as "pop," they released several EPs and singles before debuting their album, "Mercurial World," in 2021. Praised for its melodic hooks and meticulous production, it was often labeled as "synth-pop." Their success is reflected in streaming numbers, social media followers, and festival appearances. Magdalena Bay's stylized online aesthetic complements their music, creating a cohesive artistic vision. Tenenbaum says, “We love extending the world of our music past sound into videos or graphics.” Lewin adds, “We’re trying to create an atmosphere or an emotional quality with it.” This integrated approach, termed "world-building," is central to their artistry. Amazing album. Synth pop masterpiece. Filled with bright shimmering moments that twist and morph into uncertainty. It pulls you in and spins you around into a silvery haze. Thank you Mag Bay!

For me, Imaginal Disk doesn't have the same cohesiveness of Mercurial World... and yet it does. It's just all over the map in style and influence, yet it works as a prog-rock opera. It' a masterpiece in its own right, and perhaps its an example of that phenomena music listeners know well: MB's first album, Mercurial World, is such a piece of rare magic, a moment captured in amber of two gifted musicians/artists/songwriters blooming and blossoming into their full creative powers after years of meaningful and worthy apprenticeships, that any follow-up is difficult to assess on its own merits.

Imaginal Disk is the duo coming into awareness of their full powers, and trusting their vision. I can't wait to hear what they do next, and hope we don't have to wait too long.

I saw them live a month ago and it was spectacular and went beyond what I expected. It didn't take long for Mica and Matt and their band to have the audience 100% on board, strapped-in, and ready to go wherever Magdalena Bay wanted to take them.

I never write reviews anymore but i had to make an exception for this album. Been a big fan of Magdalena Bay for awhile but they’ve truly outdone themselves with this album. Matt and Mica are truly two of the most talented musicians and writers that i know of in modern music. The music on this album is truly one-of-a-kind and unique to them but also super accessible! Listening this album is just pure bliss but it’s also really complex. Theres a crazy amount of different sounds and instruments that are incorporated in each track and yet the whole thing is so cohesive. This is an album with truly no skips and i honestly believe that ANYONE who gives it a chance will love it. Please give it a listen and support brilliant artists like this - 100% the best album of 2024.

This is my album of the year. Fantastic all the way through, with excellent pacing and thematic cohesion. Musical style and thematic content feel modern and topical. Clear lineage from dozens of deftly incorporated influences makes this a deeply engaging listen many times over.

The lyric booklet is above average. It comes in a beautiful Ecopak. I don't like the cardboard. The slots open to the outside, not towards the crease, which feels insecure. It is too wide to fit in my CD rack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chegou em perfeito estado!

... into an imaginal disk, just plug and play. Superior production and a small but significant world away from their first, inverted spectacle.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE 2024 Album

Been a Fan ever since Mercurial World dropped and I didn't think it could be topped. This Album makes every song a wild ride of emotions where you will never know what you are getting simply by listening to the initial first seconds of a track. The CD packaging itself is gorgeous and otherworldly definitely an instance where a Gatefold Digipak packaging was the ideal choice.

Album of the year by the most underrated, underappreciated band alive today.

This vinyl is what perfection looks and sounds like.

Been listening to them for 5 plus years and heard every song 1000000+ times - The development of the band is insane album to album.

I love them, I really hope more people hear this and give them love as the production on this is and every other song by them is stunning.
