Several years ago, a treasure trove containing some 6,000 original Bob Dylan manuscripts was revealed to exist. Their destination? Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The documents, as essential as they are intriguing—draft lyrics, notebooks, and diverse ephemera— comprise one of the most important cultural archives in the modern world. Along with countless still and moving images and thousands of hours of riveting studio and live recordings, this priceless collection now resides at The Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, just steps away from the archival home of Dylan’s early hero, Woody Guthrie.

Nearly all the materials preserved at The Bob Dylan Center are unique, previously unavailable, and, in many cases, even previously unknown. As the official publication of The Bob Dylan Center, BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE is the first wide-angle look at the Dylan archive, a book that promises to be of vast interest to both the Nobel Laureate’s many musical fans and to a broader national and international audience as well.

Edited by Mark Davidson and Parker Fishel, BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE focuses a close look at the full scope of Dylan’s working life, particularly from the dynamic perspective of his ongoing and shifting creative processes—his earliest home recordings in the mid-1950s right up through
Rough and Rowdy Ways (2020), his most recent studio recording, and into the present day.

The centerpiece of BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE is a carefully curated selection of over 600 images including never-before-circulated draft lyrics, writings, photographs, drawings and other ephemera from the Dylan archive.

With an introductory essay by Sean Wilentz and epilogue by Douglas Brinkley, the book features a surprising range of distinguished writers, artists and musicians, including Joy Harjo, Greil Marcus, Michael Ondaatje, Gregory Pardlo, Amanda Petrusich, Tom Piazza, Lee Ranaldo, Alex Ross, Ed Ruscha, Lucy Sante, Greg Tate and many others. After experiencing the collection firsthand in Tulsa, each of the authors was asked to select a single item that beguiled or inspired them. The resulting essays, written specifically for this volume, shed new light on not only Dylan’s creative process, but also their own.

BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE is an unprecedented glimpse into the creative life of one of America’s most groundbreaking, influential and enduring artists.

Everything about this book is special....the essays, the photos, the layout, even the paper. If you love music, and our country's rock n' roll and folk music, you must have this book. Sean Wilentz's opening essay is a masterpiece. But there is so much that I did not know about Dylan in this magnificent book. Whether you want to know who inspired Mr. Tambourine Man --- it was Bruce Langhorne -- or his 1978 tour of America, or how fans initially rebelled at Dylan's embrace of electronic sound, you will find so much in this book about Dylan and America's music that you may not have known. He is more than a cultural icon. Dylan is the definition in so many ways of our culture. Mark Davidson and Parker Fishel have done a fabulous job editing and writing these essays that outline for the first time the scope and impact of Dylan's legacy. It's a perfect Christmas or birthday gift for the person who has everything, or thinks they do. lMy brother, the Rolling Stones' producer, once told me that Dylan was America's greatest musical gift. After reading this book, I know what he meant. Enjoy!

Our book about Bob Dylan “Mixing Up the Medicine” arrived very quickly and is a very comprehensive look at Bob Dylan’s life. I am still making my way through it as it is a large book, but I am thrilled with what I have read so far!

You can treat this book as a biography but it's really a fantastic collection of photographs and stories. For the uninitiated there's probably a lot more songs written by Bob Dylan then you even know. Amazon offers this regularly at a pretty decent price on sale so just hold back and wait for one of the bargain days and pick it up. It's the best coffee table book you'll ever own. It's a fantastic piece of music memorabilia. When was the last time you were able to say that about any one item in your collection?

I was on the fence about this book, but decided to buy it when I saw the price drop and am glad I did. The video preview does not do justice to how densely packed this book is with images and text. Just flipping through it today made me glad I made the purchase (even if the cover was a little dinged in the corner, but that’s amazons fault not the books) And this is a book, like the Beatles Anthology, that I can see myself picking up randomly flipping through for years to come
It goes right up to Shadow Kingdom this year, and knowing Dylan it will probably be out of date in a few months, but even so, this is a great book for any Dylan fan covering pretty much all the major (and a lot of the minor) events of the first 60 and counting years of his career.

A great retrospective on Dylan's incredible career. Full of essays, photographs, and various memorabilia, this book covers all aspects of Dylan's wonderful and expansive career. While no one chapter goes into too much detail, everything is covered at least briefly, while providing great background and imagery to provide proper context and any necessary information to guiding a listener through the 40+ albums Dylan has released in his lifetime. I would 100% recommend this book to any fan of Dylan's, especially the newer ones looking for a brief overview of his entire, creative life.

5.0 out of 5 stars MIXING UP THE MEDICINE - A TREASURE TROVE FOR DYLAN FOLLOWERS
Reviewed in Australia on May 17, 2024
There have been countless books written over the years on Bob Dylan by respected authors including Greil Marcus and Clinton Heylin. Now at last Mixing Up the Medicine - the title of course coming from Dylan's song Subterranean Homesick Blues is easily the most comprehensive and revealing book on Dylan yet. This very large tome unlocks treasures from the Archive of Bob Dylan Centre in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It reveals a treasure trove of Dylan manuscripts, notebooks, letters, song lyrics and artworks never ever seen before. Beatle fans who know of Dylan's meeting with them in the early Beatle days also get more than a few mentions and will appreciate correspondence revealed from the late George Harrison and Sir Paul McCartney who sent Dylan a Christmas greeting card. There is also a candid shot of Beatles gofer Mal Evans about to open the door to Dylan's van. Many concerts are covered including Dylan's appearance at the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival where he enjoyed backstage company of John Lennon, Yoko Ono, George Harrison and Ringo. Writer Amanda Petrusich contributes a most absorbing piece titled Reflections on Tarantula when Dylan was holed up in Woodstock recovering from his motorcycle accident. Other fine and knowledgeable contributors including Greil Marcus and Michael Ondaatje among others. Typewritten lyrics to Maggies Farm take their place in this great book and also included is Dylan's hand-written draft lyrics to A Tight Connection To My Heart. There is so very much to absorb in this book. It is too much to sit through and absorb in a few days. My advice is to take your time, there is a surprise and detailed revelation on every turn of the page. A 1969 letter from George Harrison states...Dear Bobbie, thanks for Nashville Skyline, it is beautiful. Love to you all G.H. There are also many amazing facts that Dylan followers will throw around for discussion including the first and then altered lyrics to his popular song Knockin' On Heaven's Door. The changed verse became a highlight on each of his Rolling Thunder Review concerts. More than 1000 images by 135 photographers, artists and film directors are showcased on these pages. There is an absolute wealth of Dylan knowledge to be absorbed from this book from his very early days right up to Rowdy Ways and his never ending concerts. I must say, thanks Amazon for the price around $82.00 Australia, where in the shops here is sells for $160.00. This book is worth every cent. Essential and so very rewarding for any true Dylan fan.
