    Not just for pizza!
I’m in love with this pizza oven. I no longer want to order pizza out, my pizzas are much better than what I can order from a pizza joint. I can use gas or wood. The video is my very first pizza launch. The oven is easy to use but I recommend reading the instructions first so you ruin the stone. I like to make Neapolitan style dough and between my homemade dough and this oven, the pizza quality doesn’t get much better. Easier to use than a traditional wood fired oven and heats up fast. The size is perfect for the personal size pizzas I’ve been making. I don’t know that it’s meant to be super portable but we took it on a big group camping trip. Another friend has the same oven and he brought his too. Between the 2 ovens, we made pizzas for 20-25 people on our camping trip. My husband has recently started cooking fish on a cast iron skillet in the Karu 16, using wood chips for fuel. Now he doesn’t have the urge to buy a Traeger! This was so worth the money - a lot of fun, easy to use, and great food!

I've wanted a brick pizza oven for years and I finally gave up on that dream after finding out that they're illegal in my city for new construction. We decided to buy a portable oven and, honestly, our expectations were not high. It's pizza after all so it can't be a bad thing no matter what. After buying this oven I have learned that there are legions of amateur Pizzaiolos using small ovens and making incredible pizza. I, if I may be so bold, have become one of them.

I started out using strictly wood as a fuel and I've had it well north of 950 degrees. As a wood fired oven it is simply amazing. Recently I needed to have my temperature down in the 500's and straight charcoal worked well to keep it at that temperature. Just this week I purchased the gas adapter and cooked for the first time with it tonight. It's super easy and very effective, getting well above 800 degrees and cooking more stress free for when you have a large group and want to stress less about adding wood. This is a very well made, well rounded cooking tool that will raise the level of your pizza game. There are other ovens on the market and most of them are awesome. You almost can't go wrong with any of them. For a little more money than many of them this Ooni has a little more capacity and the gas option is just as effective as using wood. Highly recommended.

The product arrived earlier than expected. Its a big somewhat heavy box. The 2 pizza stone add to most of the weight. Setup took < an hour just taking my time, super simple. Most is pre-built and the tool needed is included. Make sure you have a big space table to install on. Also, make sure you have or purchase a nice metal table to use this oven on...no wood of glass table, it can get HOT. The oven is wide. It comes with a grate you slide to the very back for hardwood or charcoal. I used "hardwood mesquite charcoal" my first few times. Temp got to 700 F! Honestly, it takes time to learn to perfect (and I am not there!) making your pizza. Wife made a fantastic sourdough pizza blobs. Rolled them out (shoot for thin), sauced and toppings them up! There are 2 kinds of pizza peels...wood and metal. The wood was a bit thicker but worked excellent for getting the pizza in the oven...use cornmeal so it slides around / off onto the oven easy. Then I use a long handled thin BBQ spatula to slide under the pizza and turn / move it around. DO NOT go off and ignore your baking...it will catch fire! I then used a metal very thin Pizza peel to snatch the pizza off the oven. I also decided to invent and but the propane attachment. Major improvement and ease of firing up the oven. You remove the simple airflow attachment off the back. Install the propane attachment, connect your propane tank, fire it up...hit 900+ degrees in 20 minutes! Very easy to regulate the flame in minor increments. I will be looking at other recipes and techniques to perfect the process. To say its a conversation piece and people love the pizza is an understatement! Clean up is simple and I keep up with it after every cook session. Just turn the oven off (or let the wood/charcoal wither away). Get up the next morning and scrape off the burned ash, take the stones out and scrub them in the sink, takeout side to dry...do a quick vacuum of ash inside, clean the glass and inside door / where the stones will go back with some simple cleaner (simple green)...bobs your uncle...ready for the next meal! Cheers...I really like this...I use on my back deck and I do have a 10 foot ceiling over it and despite this puppy getting to 900 degrees...no problem 7+ feet above the metal chimney with heat rising. They make a cover for it (not gotten it)...in case it does sit in the elements. I only picked 4 stars on "giftable" as you better like the person a lot to gift this expensive but awesome gift!

I initially started with a ~$200 pizza oven to make sure I would use it, and make more than just pizza. I really wish I just committed to the Ooni right away.

After a few months of research contemplating buying the Ooni Karu and the Gozney Arc, I settled with the ooni because it was one of the few ovens I could find that worked with both wood/charcoal and natural gas. I find the gas to be incredible convenient for pizzas so I can get an even cook, but love that slight wood flavor with things like steak, cast iron chicken thighs, etc.

The customer service is also amazing with Ooni. If you buy there oven, make sure to join either their facebook page or their subreddit. They are both the most positive and supporting groups I have joined, especially with cooking products, and they are the only ones that have actual employees in the group engage with us to answer and questions or concerns.

I would struggle finding one complaint I have with this unit that isn't an expected result from using a smaller at home pizza oven (such as it gets dirty really quickly especially with using charcoal and if using charcoal/wood, you'll need a ton of it and constantly need to feed it)

This was my first Ooni; all others are cheaper ones (I have a Burnhard Nero, for example, which also makes great pizza and I can only praise it). If you spend a lot of time using them and understand how to use them to their full potential, you can make great pizza. But, they take a lot of practice and there is a lot of guesswork involved at times, and sometimes even I get it wrong with them, and it ends up with a pizza frisbee and a lot of swearing!

Now, the Karu 16. Ooni absolutely nailed it with this one:
First of all, it's heavy and insulated very well, with a massive and thick stone, which means it gets to temperature in 15' or so (which is not too fast) but it STAYS at that temperature in a very stable manner, and you don't need to be adding fuel every minute like you do with other ovens.
Second, it has a huge, 16" stone. This means that you can move a 10" pizza around very easily, from corner to corner, to get the base cooked properly. It's also easy to turn pizzas inside it, without hitting the sidewalls and picking up any soot.
Third, the door swinging down is a game-changer. With most previous pizza ovens I had, you had to put the door somewhere else, meaning you could burn thing, melt things, drop the door and damage it, burn yourself, damage the temperature probe, and of course it would take a lot longer to open and close, so the temperature would drop a fair bit in the process right when you really want a hot oven. This one, you just open, launch the pizza and close it in seconds.
Fourth, it is really really easy to light. Use firelighters and sticks and you will be at 300oC in about 10', and it really gets super hot in 15' if you keep adding fuel.
Fifth, and most crucial; the fixed thermometer and the glass are two tools that really are amazing, as you can easily work out how hot your oven is (just let the flames die down a bit, and see what it stabilises at, which is the temperature of the actual oven's mass rather than the air in the oven) and you can monitor the pizza without opening the door or trying to peek through a tiny flap.
I almost always get it right with my other ovens, as I've practiced pizza-making a lot with them, but it did take a lot of practice and experimentation with each to work out their peculiarities. I was really not expecting I would just nail it straight away first time I used this one. The Karu 16 takes away all guesswork and all you need to do is follow the instructions and watch through the glass.
The downsides; just one; it's a bit pricey. OK, it's ****** expensive. But, it really is very well insulated and it's seriously well-built, and frankly it really works and it's totally in its own league. I know I will be keeping this one, using it a lot, and using it for many many years. For example, I wasted £180 on a Dellonda pile of junk; buy cheap, buy twice, and it really was £180 wasted for a pizza stone and a pizza peel, which were the only useable bits from it. Quality costs, unfortunately.
Would I buy this again, having now used it? Absolutely.
