Fresh Tomato Ketchup
Makes about 1-1/2 cups
Total Time: 1-1/2 hours, plus 12 hours chilling time
"The best part was watching the tomatoes pop. The hardest was using the strainer" – Brooke, 11
This ketchup recipe takes everything we love about this condiment and gets there with fresh tomatoes and traditional flavorings such as vinegar, garlic, brown sugar, and allspice. Homemade ketchup has even more tomato flavor than store-bought, making this ketchup extra delicious!

Prepare Ingredients
You can use cherry tomatoes instead of the grape tomatoes, but because they are juicier, you will need to cook them a little longer. In step 3, increase the cooking time to 12 to 15 minutes.
Needed Equipment:
- 12-inch nonstick skillet
- Rubber Spatula
- Blender
- Dish Towel
- Fine-mesh strainer
- Medium bowl
- Jar with tight-fitting lid
- 2-1/4 pounds grape tomatoes
- 1 garlic clove, peeled
- 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
- 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- Pinch ground allspice
Start Cooking!
"It was the best ketchup I have ever tasted. I loved it." -- Kallie, 12
- 1. Add all ingredients to 12-inch nonstick skillet. Use rubber spatula to stir to combine.
- 2. Bring tomato mixture to simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally and scraping bottom of skillet, about 20 minutes.
- 3. Reduce heat to low and cook until almost all liquid evaporates and spatula leaves distinct trail when dragged across bottom of skillet, 5 to 10 minutes. Turn off heat. Let mixture cool 15 minutes.
- 4. Ask an adult to carefully transfer tomatoes and liquid to blender jar. Blend mixture until smooth, about 1 minute.
- 5. Set fine-mesh strainer over medium bowl. Pour tomato mixture into the strainer and use a spatula to stir and press on mixture to push liquid through strainer. Discard solids left in strainer.
- 6. Cool ketchup to room temperature and then pour ketchup into jar with tight-fitting lid. Refrigerate until chilled and thickened, at least 12 hours. (Ketchup can be refrigerated up to 1 month).
Editorial Reviews
Review
"The third book in the America’s Test Kitchen Kids series teaches kids (and parents!) how to make their favorite store-bought foods at home. There’s even a section on making mixes (pancake mix, macaroni and cheese mix, sugar cookie mix) if your people prefer to cook from a box. Like other America’s Test Kitchen books, the recipes are meticulously written and the steps are precisely photographed. Buy this for: anyone who is stuck at home with wee ones." -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2023I bought this for my 10 year old and she has fun going through the book and making things ON HER OWN! It's amazing to see their growth and what they can do. If the kids are at all interested in cooking it's worth the purchase!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2021I was delighted to find this book. The recipe choices and the tips on tools and common cooking procedures are great. The graphic design is appealing and clearly geared toward kids without talking down to them. Unfortunately, the hardcover book is too tightly bound to open easily and lie reasonably flat, so I took off one star for this (I kept trying to flatten it. The inside margins near the binding are very narrow, making pages hard to read unless the book is flatter. Overall, it's hard to wrestle this book into submission for easy use). These recipes are for kids with curiosity and patience, since many are pretty time consuming. The payoff for the effort can be big and the recipes for snacks let kids make some favorite snacks such as crackers (even goldfish! I didn't know there's a cute little cutter for making them) with simple ingredients. A good way for kids to learn more about cooking, to have some fun, and to reduce consumption of heavily processed foods.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2021My son is just starting to have an interest in cooking. We haven't cooked anything from it yet, it was a Christmas gift, but most of the recipes seem good.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021I got this for my son who loves to cook. The directions are easy to follow. So far we have made a few recipes and they were good. The sugar cookies are a little too crunchy in my opinion and we lowered the cooking time on the next batches to keep from over cooking. Overall, he truly loves this.
