Waterford fans: Do Not Buy This !
Our family has purchased & collected Waterford crystal items for over 40 years. Glassware, vases, frames, etc. We were looking for a little something for our mother to have out and use every day. This would have been perfect…if it were the real thing. First, on arrival and opening the package the box color was not typical and the usual recognizable font didn’t seem right and the item wasn’t wrapped in Waterford-stamped tissue paper. Second, the Waterford insignia sticker was unusually positioned on the object (on the spoke, not the bottom) and not completely affixed. The quintessential seahorse was nowhere on the item and the Waterford name engraving (acid stamp) was not on the bottom under-surface of the piece. It was the wrong font, and was face up on the inside of the tray to be able to read just by looking at it. That’s not how Waterford engraves their items. The acid stamp is typically underneath- you have to pick up the item and look on the under-surface to find it. The seahorse is often included in the stamp over/under the “R” in ‘Waterford’, but not always. Did not exist here. And lastly, classic Waterford is made in Ireland, not Slovenia as the stickers indicated. Everything about this item said ‘imposter’, seemed inauthentic, and was immediately sent back. Very disappointed that we could not give this gift. We then went directly to the Waterford site and ordered it from there. If Waterford has truly outsourced some of its work to Slovenia, they must address these inconsistencies and the lack of quality and attention to detail Waterford crystal deserves and its collectors expect. Furthermore, if Amazon is selling something that cannot be authenticated, it should say so. It would save themselves costs of return shipping. Its customers deserve to purchase things they believe are authentic. Having said all that, if Waterford has outsourced some of its items to Slovenia, buyer beware. It’s not the same quality as the Irish original. Maybe head to Waterford’s website directly and purchase your items or gifts from there.
