Excellent Luggage except for the poor quality wheels

Excellent Luggage except for the poor quality wheels
When we got home from Punta Cana in April 2023 my wife said: “Can you take a look the wheels on our suitcase, they look worn out”. We bought this luggage on Amazon in February 2022. In that 14-month period we used it probably about 4 to 5 times. Originally my wife had picked it out and asked me to look over for approval. I did a fast look and saw that it was rated 4.3 from over 1,000 reviews so I told her it looked pretty good so we bought it. I looked at the wheels after we got back from the last trip. Four of the 8t wheels still looked good but the other 4 were in a delaminated state with some rubber peeling off. One had a noticeable flat spot which looks like the wheel did not turn at one point. After seeing this, I went on Amazon and started looking at the reviews under 5 of 5 and the wheel issue was the most listed item as a shortcoming. I read that the suitcase is guaranteed for 1 year if you register it within 120 days of purchase. There wasn’t any registration info that came with it and we’d be over the limit by 2 months anyway. I looked on Amazon for many hours for replacement wheels. The only way to get double wheels is to purchase the whole assembly which includes the bracket that holds them to the suitcase. Unfortunately, they’re all generic and do not fit any particular brand. On our suitcase, the bracket would have to be the exact height because it fits into a recess and most brands of suitcases have recesses too but in varying heights. There’s a lot of assemblies available but they provide minimal information on the sizes and the mounting holes of the brackets weren’t there on some and the ones that did, where mostly 4 screws and ours is 5 screws. The ones that had 5 screws where in different locations than ours and I had zero confidence that getting an assembly one would fit ours. Even if the original Travelpro wheels were available, there’s no way I would use them unless they had improved the quality of the wheels. Then I started looking at just buying the wheels alone. There are many sizes but I found one that would fit w/o hitting the wheel holder at the top or the sides of the wheel carrier. On Amazon I bought two bags of “OwnMy 50 x 18mm Set of 4 Luggage Suitcase Replacement Wheels, Rubber Swivel Caster Wheels Bearings Repair Kits”. Unfortunately, all the axles than come with the wheels are intended for single wheels at the 4 corners and not double wheels at the 4 corners. They come with two different lengths of axles but they’re nowhere close to being long enough to put double wheels. I was confident that I could make my own longer axles, so I ordered 4 sets that came in his week. These wheels are a very hard rubber vs. the oringal ones that were a soft rubber so I suspect that they’ll last a lot longer.

I bought this bag to replace a Travelpro Crew Roll Aboard that was at least 20 years old. I packed this little guy with everything I needed for 2 weeks in Europe. I had planned to check it but because of an airline booking error I had to carry it on a regional jet. I am an old woman and I was able to grab this bag by its top and side handles and slide it into the bin no problem. It rolls along upright on smooth surfaces, tips to roll over cobblestones and rough paths. The telescoping handle feels solid. I carried it on trains, checked it on three flights and an overnight bus. It looks good as new. I got the blue because it was a little cheaper and it is just enough different to stand out on the carousel.
I particularly like that both sides have full covered zippered compartments that eliminate the need for compression cubes.
I managed to get everything in that I packed for the trip plus a bottle of artisan gin, a bottle of grappa and a bottle of Croatian olive oil.
I looked at other bags but decided to reward Travelpro for the excellent service I got from my old Crew bag.

When searching for carry-on luggage, it seems that the luggage sizes widely vary even though they may say they meet airline reqt dimensions. These actually meet the 22"x14"x9" size reqt including wheels & handles. Additionally, these are very light at just 6.1lbs. Just that reqt alone eliminated 90% of the carry-on's that I searched for. The luggage itself appears well made and good quality. The wheels spin easily & freely. They attach slightly recessed into the bag so hopefully that helps them stay intact when travelling. The handle telescopes up with two handle lengths possible. The grab handles are thick & heavy rubber to avoid any broken handle issues. They also are closely aligned to the bag so as not to increase overall size. The built-in TSA lock works well and is easy to set your own code. The bag does have a 2" expansion gusset should you need to put more in it but this will expand it passed the carry-on size reqt. On the interior, I liked that both sides have zippered enclosed compartments. This will making packing the clamshell type case easier and nothing falls out when opening/closing. The zippers all move freely and don't anticipate any issues. Ended up with the Ensign Blue color as other desired color was sold out. After receiving it, the Ensign Blue color was appealing and happy with my choice.

I don't write reviews. But when I read @Vionette's one-star review for the Travelpro Maxlite Air Hardside Expandable Medium 25-inch suitcase posted on 4/12/2025, I was compelled to chime in as a public service for people shopping for reliable luggage. Keep looking!

I purchased the same Travelpro Maxlite Air 25-inch hard spinner on 9/19/2023 for $186.99. I used it exactly three times for domestic travel.

The third time I used this suitcase was for a trip home for Christmas in December 2024. While boarding an Amtrack train to Michigan, the telescope handle stopped working and was stuck in the upright position. A kind man who was over six feet tall couldn't push the handle down. Luckily, I was allowed to board the train with the handle extended. I ended up borrowing a suitcase from my mother for my return flight to Arizona.

I should add that at the same time I purchased this suitcase, I also paid $314 + tax for the Travelpro Platinum Elite Hardside Expandable Carry on Spinner in the same Dark Sky Blue color:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B12RPMXF?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
It's great for business trips. I haven't had a problem with this suitcase - yet.

The next time I travel and need to check a bag, I will use my 7-year old Skyway Luggage medium size fabric spinner suitcase that I purchased at Kohl's. It's lightweight and in excellent condition with no defects.

The defective Travelpro medium spinner suitcase I paid close to $200 for is still at my Mom's house in the Midwest.

Read and pay attention to the negative reviews of this suitcase. Many people cite zippers and wheels that broke upon first use, handles being too tight to grip, the lack of Travelpro customer service and loopholes in Travelpro’s "Lifetime Limited Warranty" that are deliberately designed to protect the company while screwing the customer. Good luck getting Travelpro to refund your luggage or fixed without great time and expense to you.

I will never buy Travelpro luggage again or any luggage on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quality, Crisp Looking, & Perfect Size for Carry-On Only Travel!
Reviewed in Canada on August 5, 2022
Size: Carry On 21-InchColor: Slate GreenVerified Purchase
Purchased my 21” Maxlite Air specifically to make the switch to Carry-On Only air travel. Had just returned from nearly 3 weeks in France and due to airline chaos in summer 2022 we went carry on only. My wife had a small roller but I had 40L Patagonia Black Hole Duffel which was great but a pain to lug through airports.

The Maxlite gives me the same capacity, in a very lightweight hard sided 4-wheel roller. Super high quality and bang for your buck, consistent with all the reviews I had read. Also gives the option to expand it 2” in depth if you wanted to do some shopping and then check the bag on way home. I’ll update my review after our next trip this fall but it is ALL a question of capacity for me so I did a packing test-run.

I’m a slim shorter guy (small shirts, 29/30 pants, size 7 shoes) so judge accordingly about quantities. But as per photo attached, I determined the max I can bring as: 8-10 tees/polos, 6-7 button-up shirts, 1 light sweater, 4-5 shorts/swim trunks, 4-5 pants, 1 blazer, 2 jackets, 3 belts, 10 underwear, 12 socks, 2 pairs of shoes and 1 pair of sandals. That includes what I wear on the plane (jeans, tee, sweater, jacket, 1 of the pairs of shoes). But everything else went in the suitcase, along with sunglasses, lint roller and electric razor…and that is NOT expanded. That’s up to 18 tops…and therefore 18 outfits, making Carry-On only a totally realistic option for ANY length of trip, especially if you had a Vrbo or Airbnb with laundry. I will add a third pair of shoes in my small daypack “personal item” along with my toiletries and electronics.

So it had surprising capacity and was still very lightweight when full. The right hand side that has the handle beneath has less space kind of in 3 little channels, so pack accordingly with shoes etc slotted in between.

The Maxlite Air 21” was below all the carry on dimensions for all airlines I checked and I looked at pretty much all the Canadian, American, and European carriers, including discount ones like Easyjet and Ryanair.

I’m officially converted to traveling light…and the TravelPro seems to be the perfect fit to make it a more comfortable walk through airports or along city streets. Again will update after my first trip…but hope the above info is useful for anyone who (like me) was very hesitant to ditch the checked luggage.
