These butcher blocks will become beloved heirloom pieces, treasured for years to come. |
The History of John Boos & Co
In 1887, Effingham, Illinois blacksmith Conrad Boos used a Sycamore tree placed on three legs while hammering horseshoes. Three years later, a local butcher realized a wooden Boos Block could be used for cutting meat, and had one custom made. By 1911, John Boos & Co was shipping custom butcher blocks from coast to coast. Throughout the 20’s to 40’s, John Boos expanded and added tables and workbenches to their product range, the majority of which went to the war effort during WWII. By the 1940s, John Boos had earned their outstanding reputation for quality and craftsmanship, and their butcher blocks were found in every restaurant, food store and butcher shop in America. Today, the traditional craftsmen work ethic is still alive and well at John Boos, where all boards and butcher blocks are still proudly manufactured in Effingham, Illinois. Often imitated, John Boos boards and blocks are favorites of professional chefs and can be found in restaurants and commercial settings worldwide.
Committed to Environmental Integrity
John Boos’ Hardwood foresters follow professional best practices that mirror natural forces. Individual trees are selected for harvest, encouraging forests to renew and regenerate themselves naturally and prolifically. John Boos & Co. recycles 95% of all raw lumber scraps and sawdust which are used to generate electricity and create steam to fuel the boilers. John Boos sawdust is also recycled as livestock bedding for local agricultural needs.
Care and Maintenance
Keeping Your Board Sanitized:
Wash your John Boos cutting board with hot soapy water after each use and dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. For further sanitation, the board can be rinsed with a vinegar or chlorine bleach solution. (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water/5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, John Boos boards are not intended for the dishwasher.
Maintaining Your Board:
Oil your cutting board on all surfaces every 3-4 weeks to maintain the original Boos block cream finish with beeswax. This quick task will protect and prolong the board’s life and ensure it is enjoyed for decades to come. John Boos recommends using John Boos Mystery Oil and/or John Boos Block Cream. (Sold separately on Amazon.)
John Boos Mystery Oil and Butcher Block Cream: Recommended for use with all John Boos wood products.
- Food Safe
- Easy to Apply
- Protects and prolongs the life of the board

Product Description
Bring home a culinary classic from the Classic Reversible End Grain Chopping Block collection by John Boos. The Classic collection features butcher blocks made with beautiful end grain construction, resulting in the iconic checkerboard wood pattern. Classic Reversible blocks are available in thicknesses ranging from 2.25-6 inches. True to their roots, Classic Collection Chopping Blocks are ideal for daily cutting, chopping and food preparation tasks. Since 1887, every genuine John Boos cutting board and butcher block has been proudly made in Effingham, Illinois by skilled craftspeople using time honored techniques. Today, USA made John Boos cutting boards and butcher blocks are used and loved in commercial and home kitchens worldwide. Generations of culinary professionals have trusted and relied on John Boos products, because Boos blocks and cutting boards are designed to meet the demanding requirements of culinary professionals who expect the highest level of quality and food safety standards. The robust and durable construction gives the work surface a commercial grade toughness that protects the sharp edge on fine cutlery. Often imitated, John Boos and Co. is internationally known for its expertise in crafting American hardwoods into products of beauty, durability and function. Simple board care can ensure this heirloom, handcrafted board is a favorite in your kitchen for years to come. Every John Boos Board and Block comes with a food safe natural oil finish that helps protect the wood during transit. Once a month, apply an even coat of John Boos Mystery Oil (NSF approved, sold separately), and allow it to soak in overnight. Repeat this process more often when the board is brand new or if you live in a dry, arid climate. John Boos recommends applying John Boos Board Cream (also sold separately) to seal the top of the wood surface after applying the Mystery Oil. A few quick minutes of regular oil application will ensure your new board is properly seasoned, and ready for work! After use, wash board with warm, soapy water (all wooden cutting boards are not dishwasher safe and should not be soaked in water).. Troubleshooting : Warpage: The board needs to be Oiled at least once a month. After oiling the customer can apply the Boos Board Cream. Warpage is caused by a imbalance of moisture in the wood, be sure to oil all sides of the cutting board. Our boards are individually manufactured and oiled before packaging at the factory. ** note: Use the John Boos Oil or Mineral oil. Boos Board cream is to be used only with the oil. Splitting Glue line: If the board has been properly oiled and maintained the glue lines should hold indefinitely. Once in a while there might be a piece of wood that did not bond and a glue line failure can occur. Compared to the number of boards sold the amount with glue line failure is very small.

Expensive? A little more than other brands. And you know what - it proves the truism that you get what you pay for! I (and my wife) am delighted with this Boos product. It reeks of quality and care of manufacture. It is obviously precision made, and I look forward to using it regularly for years to come. A+++
Initially when I saw some of the negative reviews about others submerging it in water and some of the reports of the cracking - I figured they do not know how to maintain one correctly and was not too worried/swayed by the negative reviews. Take warning from me:
My tried and true old guy has seen daily use so much and has stains and cuts - so I wanted to give this as a gift to my husband who loves to cook and loves knives. (I realize how that sounds... ha ha )
I saw this go on sale and purchased this because of the Boos brand and loved the wood pattern - I also liked that it was thicker wood than most boards.
Gave it for Christmas, and cracked in early February. Right outside the return window - of course it did.
It was gently handled and correctly used.
I contacted Boos Co. on their website directly as it was out of the return/exchange time here - and they suggested that I wood glue and clamp it and offered nothing else but an apology and an assurance that this happening is rare and an expression of their shock! Just a run of the mill automated copy+paste sorry for the inconvenience response with no real solution except for me having to attempt to fix myself a less than 45 day used $200+ cutting board. So if I didn't have these supplies - you're telling me that I get to absorb the cost and buy the clamps and glue and do this myself... cool cool cool. Lovely. The more I think about it the more outrageous this is. What if I was in an apartment and a little old 85 year old lady? Fix it yourself, sorry.
Guess Boos is not the quality that they used to be; I assume they are using different adhesive/wood/products and craftsmanship than from when they were making quality products years ago.
I read through the other reviews and I know a bit about wood working - I'm not sure how an END GRAIN cutting board can warp so insanely bad - seemingly that would be impossible, if that's what it actually is. I don't believe their products anymore.
Last Boos product I buy.
(Funny note: my husband added a carefully sharpied in "b" to its name now, so at least we get a laugh out of it)
One other thing, it comes with a small packet of Board Cream (but NOT the oil). My advice would be to take it out of the plastic and let the board adjust to the conditions of wherever you plan to use it over night. They recommend oiling the board once a month (depending on your specific variables). I would add that after letting the board adjust to the room overnight, inspect it for any cracks, etc. If all is well, and this is my recommendation only, oil the board as directed and let sit overnight on night 2 of receiving it.
I hope this helps!

It arrived, it's so beautiful, I oiled it right away (3 times) and then I put it to the real test- I chopped, sliced, and even tenderized on my new board, it works great. But...the real test is the test of time, I have now had my board for a long enough time to really see how it holds up- I must be honest, I have let some time go without oiling it, but even then my board looks as beautiful as the day it arrived. I do truly think this board will last a lifetime- I am adding this to my "hand down to my kids one day" pile, along with my Le Creuset collection.
If you want a good item that will last forever- just do it!
